Was the G8 really that bad?

I mean, the G7 was surely not something to be happy with, but the G9 is a camera which really makes me angry.

So why did Canon skip the G8?

Maybe they skipped the G8 for the same reason they skipped the G4.

Four sounds like the word death in some Asian language, so many global companies do not use 4 in product names. Maybe 8 was like double-death????

I have a theory that the G8 was supposed to be a 10MP based on the G7's 10MP sensor, and with Kodak and (?)Fuji coming out with 12MP cameras they had to push production of the G9 ahead of schedule or be seen to be lagging behind.

I wouldn't be surprised if the G8 was to have RAW and or a mix of the 'improvements' seen in the G9. The reported poor image quality could be due to having to rush the software for the new chip through.

Speculation only, but it makes sense if you think about it.

Canon loves to string us along.

The G9 has raw
The G10 will have the swivel LCD

You gotta sell them cameras you know. It's known as trickle camera development :) .... make smal changes just to sell more cameras.

The G9 kinda ticked me off. Canon should be ashamed of their tactics.

Eight is generally a good luck number in Asian cultures, about the only even number that is. But when combined with the sound of "G" it sounds like ***** (Ji-ba) and other bad slang words in Mandarin. Canon has been very conscience of Asian symbols and sounds.

I've heard it on good authority that not using "G8" to name the camera was indeed a marketing ploy. This will give the pixel peepers something to speculate about, and create a buzz on the web. If every G9 came with a week on an island with Angelina Jolie, there would be a few who would say, I don't know man, her lips are awful big. I think I'm going to wait.

Yeah the camera that doesnt exist is the worse camera ever.

Mabee we should get back to whats important like actually using our cams (the ones that exist) and not what could have should have not been there.

By now

Overall, I'm quite impressed with Canon's August 2007 offerings. A 22MP 1Ds, the 40D, the G9, the A650, even the SX100. Show me another company even close.

But as you said, always a few professional pi$$ and moaners!!!

Will the G11 have a wide angle lens and no swivel LCD, or maybe RAW?

Twice as much reason why Canon skipped G4...
Canon skipped G4 because of commercial name of APPLE MAC G4 COMPUTER... so they go directly to G5. Here is the reason (Normally)

Also G2 & G3 have both 4.0 MPIX, G4 cannot be a 4 MPIX because 3 different models with same resolution will be bad for company image compared to concurrence with 5 MPIX, they create a 5 MPIX and called it G5... for 5MPIX.

But for G8, it's maybe for the G8 association of 8th most industrialised countires in the world lol :-)

Either G8 is G4x2 so normally they'll skip G12 & G16.

Yeah, sometimes I think they develop the camera with everything on it and then take most of the features off to be introduced incrementally to boost sales.

Nothing is more tragic than the murder of a beautiful theory by a gang of brutal facts.

Cerdan:

There's an Asian culture thing why there's no G4 that most agree on: The word for 4 in most Asian languages sounds like "death". Four is considered bad luck, as is 4 of anything, like 4 windows in a row, is thought to bring bad luck according to Feng Shui, the Asian guide to happiness and harmony.

As for the Apple G4, many believe it did not do as well as expected because the name G4 brought bad luck. So Canon, an Asian company, has avoided the number 4 in the naming of the S- and G- series.

In Japanese 8 is 八 (kanji) or はち (hiragana). I don't think it has any bad meaning like 4 and sometimes 7. By the way, Nikon had an F4 top of the line 35mm body.

Mamallama,

You are a genius. I cannot agree more.

Cheers.

I have to disagree with your comment about the G7 because many, many people are very happy with it. The G7 does not have some of the features a lot of people want but it is still a very good compact camera. And, when it come to picture quality it may still be Canon's best.

We'll just have to wait and see how well that 12.1 MP sensor on the G9 compares to the G7. I'm sure it will be good but the G7 is also very good.

Maybe Canon is concerned about how it sounds in Chinese.
