The iPhone..

Yup, that's why it will get its own. No problem though even on my longest trips I don't make it through my Nano's playlists. Still better than having multiple devices. I highly doubt it will work with Nike+ but then it would really be cool. No worse than my camera addiction.

for Apple to come out with this thing so they can get back to
working on computers and software.
Tom M1 :

1. The Apple Store, located in my area, is closing at 2pm, this Friday (29 June 2007), and will re-open at 6pm, and I believe you know why ----- to show and start selling their supply of iPhones !!

2. With the international travelers, already arriving, "just to get iPhones", coupled with all the locals intending to get one, I will probably have to order mine from Apple's online store. Especially, as after you purchase one, you simply go online with iTunes to have it activated and get your current phone number transferred to it.

3. Some are saying the iPhone isn't worth the cost, or that one should wait for more memory, or the "bugs" to be worked out, and all sorts of the type of concerns that tends to accompany new advanced technological product releases; but, from what I am seeing, this is really not a concern, at all, of those that have already decided to make their purchases of iPhone ------- including me. And, so what, if a better phone comes out in 6 months or 18 months (I for one expect for that to happen), many with the first generation phones, will likely purchase one of those too !!

4. Here is the list of rate plans, that has apparently, just been posted:

They will be wasting their time & money since it won't work!

1. An AT&T account is needed

2. This requires a SSN for the credit check and a 2 year contract and a billing address in the U.S. to activate.
3. No activation, no workie

4. Phones can be returned up to 14 days after sale. If box is opened - 10% restocking fee. Plus they pay for the 14 days of service. Activation fees are not refundable.

4. Phone is locked to the SIM preinstalled in phone and a previous AT&T/Cingular SIM cannot be installed for activation.

So we here in U.S.A. thank them for their money and hope they enjoy their paperweight.

That is exactly why this SIM is locked in...so that people can not figure out how to unlock them and begin to sell them in Europe or elsewhere until there is an official Apple contract. Apple is very smart that way. All sales go directly through them, and all income goes directly to them.

Al Morgan:

1. I Agree, and this is a quote from the AT&T Rates Page:

"AT&T is the exclusive carrier for iPhone in the United States — which means you’ll gain access to the country’s largest digital voice and data network."

2. But, for other countries, Apple is supposed to, if they haven't already done so, designate exclusive carriers in those countries too, from what I am told.

3. iPhone, is supposed to become as widely available as are current iPods.

No, that is only for activation.

Once the phone is activated ANY AT&T SIM can be inserted into the phone and the SIM that was in the IPhone can be placed in any other ATT phone.

However, in the case of an existing AT&TG customer that upgrades, the old SIM with his original number will be non-functional and the new preinstalled SIM will now carry the original number.

I predict that within 3 months, the IPhone will be hacked and a way to unlock the phone will be found.

RonAnnArbor:

1. The iPhone in the USA can be either purchased from and activated by Apple or by AT&T. Apple has provided us with the option of activating directly through them, as a convenience, so that one doesn't have to spend time at an AT&T facility. But, either way, the "exclusive carrier contract", in the USA is with AT&T. It will be with some other Carrier(s) in other Countries, and NOT AT&T; and, this is still being worked out by Apple.

2. Apple is already (has been for some time), negotiating for an exclusive carrier

for Canada, Europe and Asia. In Europe, they might have to go direct to users and use their current Apple networks, and this could cause them to actually "by-pass" the "SIM locked-in" feature for Europe; and thus some of the features of the iPhone, or at least change the way such would be provided. However, it appears that Apple will not have to do this.

3. Currently, iPhone is expected in Canada by Oct 2007, and in Europe by at least the end of 2007 (sometime around Dec 2007), and in Asia by 2008.

4. Apple, "intends to capture at least 1% of the "Global" cell phone market within the first year of iPhone's availability".

5. Since, it's hard to get information directly out of Apple, here are a few links to some, and much more is starting to appear on the internet, especially from companies that want to become exclusive carriers in their countries:

From what I have read my interpretation is there is no SIM - the functionality could be hardwired and I don't think the phone can be opened to fit a SIM - hence the no user replaceable battery (although 3rd party solutions undoutably will appear as they did with the ipod) ...

Also I can't work out why picture messaging isn't available - I guess will appear in a software update - unless it is disabled so as not to overload the network at launch ?

OK ... have just seen David Pogues faq on the NYT website today and it says "The iPhone comes with an installed SIM card, the tiny circuit board that stores your account information and phone number. Apple says that you should be able to replace it with any recent AT&T card, once you activate it at iTunes. No other company’s SIM card works in the iPhone."

... so apologies folks

Jon

The SIM is not openly available to reach. If the SIM is removed, lost, or damaged, a new SIM specific to that iPhone must be purchased and a new 24 month contract will be started when re-activated. You cannot insert other SIM's or use the iPod SIM in another phone. The SIM is specific to the iPhone you activate.

AT&T telephone service may be the largest network in the US but its digital voice and data network do not even exist in the rural areas as does Alltel. Too bad for those of us who live in rural areas (any area outside of a metropolitan area) are unable to "enjoy" an iPhone.

So are there enough phones to go around... or once this stuff sells out tomorrow, we're all going to have to wait months before the next production run?
