I am about the purchase the E-510. This is my first DSLR.

The general rule for consumer electronics is that the extended warrenties are not worth the money. Not sure if the same holds true in the camera world. With my past file OM systems, I never bothered and years later they are still going strong. From lurking these forums, it does not seem like Oly's fail often. I would like some advice from the general Oly regulars.

I see B&H has their 5yr MACK warrenty others like Adorama, Ritz and even Oly sell some other form of extended warrenty.

Is the warrenty worth the expense? or should I save my money for some filters or maybe an FL-50?

Thanks

I bought the Olympus 2yr extended warranty when I got my E-510. The cost was an extra $69.00. You can also buy it directly from the Olympus website as long as the camera is still within the original warranty period. I would choose the mfg extended warranty over a 3rd party one.

You could also use your credit card which adds an extra year to your warranty. Don't forget, if you buy an extra warranty and drop the camera, well, warranty is null and void. Take good care of your equipment and save your money towards buying extra lenses.

We don't buy extended warranties, but..... after Husband's camera fell and splatted beyond repair this past week we bought the extended on our two 510s. We paid a lot for it but it also covers everything, even dropping. Buying it will be our insurance that nothing will happen to them!

you will get a bad deal, because around 40% of the money goes on admin, as you clearly realise, so, as with any insurance, you insure that which you cannot afford to replace, and don't insure if you can afford to act as your own insurer. If having to buy a new camera is a major hole in the family budget, insure, if it is a minor nuisance, don't. In my own case I have my overall camera system insured all risks (because to lose the lot would be a financial disaster) but I'm not interested in extended warranties (because to replace any one item would be tolerable).

The Olympus factory extended warranty is highly recommended. It saved me big time. Any other warranty is subjective as they do not use Oly service. Oly service is likely the best of all the manufacturers out there.

One thing to consider is that the Olympus warranties (at least in the past) come with one free cleaning. Olympus recomends getting the camera cleaned every 3-4 years to among other things change the sticky tape in the bottom of the camera that collects the dust. Now, if you are a serial upgrader, and plan to upgrade to the E-3, E-538 or whatever in the future, it may not be worth it. Now that I have the E-510, I can finally schedule some time to send the E-1 for its cleaning before the extended warranty runs out.

Also, given most consumer DSLRs have a shutter rated at 50,000 activations, and you anticipate shooting quite a bit, it can be worth it if your shutter goes in the 3 period covered by the extended warranty.

If you buy at ritz and buy a ritz warranty you can drop the camera off a building and go in and get a new one no questions asked. Not sure how that offer applies to digital but my brother had this warranty on his film camera. I'm not sure if they still do this warranty. But then again ritz has poor service or at least little knowledge in Olympus gear.

Side note...go into a ritz now and play dumb...say you are looking to get a DSLR and see what they offer you. They are going to throw an XTI in front of you. They could talk your ear off about it. Scream out some ooohhsss and ahhhsss and then ask about Olympus. Start to ask questions about Olympus and they have no clue other than the basics.

Louis,

Quick question -- do you have your camera lot insured by your home/renters insurance or by some other means?

Just curious -- I believe your in the UK -- but I am just curious if I could do the same here

Been there -- done that -- rather not repeat the experience. However, I have to say, at least here in CT they have some smaller stores in some smaller strip malls and the people who run those, are much better than most. The stores in the mega malls have the most clueless people.

Thanks

I am not a "serial upgrader". I usually keep things until they break or are no longer useful for what I am doing. This is true for not only cameras but cars, TVs etc.

Having the camera cleaned under warrenty is a good incentive that I did not realize. Thank you for the information.

Well, if it is still on par with how they fixed my OM-2 when I made heavy use of that camera, then that will be great and is good enough reason to purchase the warrenty

Thanks for all the replies...I am new to the dSLR world and your kind information is very much appreciated.

Portuguese home insurance.

But I understand the US market is very different, and Bad Things happen if you actually claim. Here, that generally applies only with cars.
