I am an amateur, not doing any of this for profit (yet).....but I have been shooting in my home studio for about six months. My albums are at http://public.fotki.com/kreeb and they are in order of when I did the shoots. At this time I am mainly doing TFPs with young models who need free portfolio images.

I see some progression in my work, but I'd welcome your thoughts as well.

Thanks,

Tim,

Since you asked, to me the following really stood out ROX006, J3, Rap4. The others (not all) particularly P8241279 made me feel uncomfortable for them - perhaps it was not "natural" or was "strained". The lighting on all looks just right but the poses and facial expressions on the others may need work - like I said not all the others. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing.

Hmmm... sorry but if you "welcome our thoughts" then I can't do a Jennie.
LMAO!

Tim,

Nice shots. It looks like there is improvement from session to session. The things I noticed pertian more to lighting. In session 7 (SO001 for example) the shadows are a little dark. I don't know what your using for fill (reflector, fill light) but you should bump that up a bit, just to brighten up those shadows a bit. In session 8 it looks like maybe you were thinking about that because the problem doesn't seem to be there. In session 8 I notice you have a hair light on which seems a little overwhelming at times. Not that a harilight is overwhelming but it isn't focused on her hair so much as its top lighting the entire model, onto her shoulders, etc. Again, I don't know what your setup is but you might consider using something to hone that in like a honeycomb filter or snoot.

My last comment is one that's tough to have a lot of control over with the e10 but that's trying to get the background OOF. See how much nicer SO007 in session 8 looks than some of the others (PB142477 in session 6 for example) In some cases it looks like it would benefit you to move the model away from the background a bit if possible. I'll assume space is limited and that one isn't gong to happen so just make sure you're opening up enough to get a limited DOF.

Well those are my thoughts for whatever they're worth. Very nice of you to do all that work for these girls for free.

Work's fine your models are stiff as pokers. You can only shoot what’s in front of the camera – you just gotta get that jive going – some look self conscious. When that happens you just gotta send them away.

I would concur. Particularly the one of the Asian girl with the pink - bra I think, but we can't see that far down! She looks very annoyed, like "don't snap me when I'm changing".

But what do I know, I don't do partraiture... yet.

First of all, keep in mind that I am not a professional photographer of any kind, just an aspiring camera owner... With that said, just as a person looking at your work I have to say that it comes across as being a little dark. Part of it was mentioned already by another member regarding lightening the shadows a little with fill/bounce boost. What I'm really talking about is the background and garments worn by the models. Lots of black and dark grey in there.

I can see improvement as you progress though. You're lightyears ahead of me in portrait shooting. :-)

Just my $.02...

Oh wait, you asked for a "Jennie"! Ummm, ok! You're a natural at this! You really know what you're doing! Your mom and friends should love the shots you take of Junior!!!! However, if you "feel like it", read the manual... If not, just come here and the people who have read it can instruct you over and over on how to work your camera... ;-) ---PW

Hi,

my only point, is think a little more about your lighting setup. Think high key and low key for more atmoshere, your bride shots were nearly there, with the white background you need to really blow that out.

Your coloured backgrounds tend to interfere with your portraits, light them more gently a head shot should have an out of focus background, with emphasis on the person/subject matter, you should not be able to distinguish the pattern on your backdrop.

As for the remarks about models, people are the hardest to photograph in the studio, you must use your own persona/charm/music, to make them feel comfortable and relax. This is even harder with newbie model. You just have to persevere.

All the best--nickthe future is here and its digital

Thanks so far gang:

Some of the comments are things I,ve been thinking about and working on...experimenting etc.

I guess I'll stay...

Tim,

I'm really not qualified to judge, But I think your off to a great start, as someone else mentioned, there is some improvement with each session. I look at an image, if I like it, I like it, If I dont like it, I dont like it, thats it, end of story, and I dont care what others say, only the customer. The only real suggestion I would make would be to try using some lighter colored backgrounds, this will serve two purposes, 1) it will make your subject not blend into the background so much, and 2) it will usually eliminate the need to use a hair light, but then that kind of goes with #1.

Keep up the good work.

Cheers

Hi Tim,

Cool stuff!!! My question for you has to do with how you connected with the models?

Thanks

Tim,

1) there is progress
2) that dark blotchy background is awful - get something lighter
and/or more distance between model & background
3) either exposure is a bit on under or your workflow needs to add
levels stage in PS
4) relax more - your anxiety is reflected from models - they are
not relaxed

my two cents
