Next big E (mock up) - pics

I want to see it with it's badges (Live View, 4/3, 14MP) and so on plus I want to hold one.

Most importantly I want to see what it can do?

I don't know why everyone thinks the new E body is ugly, I find it pretty damn awesome! I personnally don't think the E-1 was pretty, but in a way, looks don't really matter. Future will tell if it handles as well as the E-1, but I think it will.

As for the size, it looks reasonable. I'd like to see specs too. And the 14-35?

Toys I probably will never buy, but looking at shiny stuff is fun, no?

The lack of those BIG wheels and knobs makes htis camera look more like a stealth bomber. It is sleek and quite nice looking...but I get the feeling that the knobs are yet to come.

There are not enough controls on that mock up to call it a pro camera. I see no DOF preview button, no mode selector, no LIGHT button for the top LCD.

There seems to be a lot missing. I like the way it looks with NO KNOBS, but I fear useability will suffer.

I don't understand all the people here who expected a new and professional camera from Oly to be smaller than the E-1! If Oly were to put all the things that we have wished for in a new camera, of course it had to be a bit bigger! Because that is what it is, a BIT bigger. It is absolutely not HUGE. To get some of the things in a new Oly camera I don't mind at all that it is bigger than the E-1.

I my mind the only "ugly" thing about it is the missing part of the battery compartment/booster.

I have never been enthusiastic about the looks of the E-1. To be able to look through the slit between the camera and the battery grip does not look like a good contsruction, but it works all rugnt. I had an earlier thread about the looks of the E-1. http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1022&message=10192700

This is absolutely wonderful news. Those of you complaining of size may be over-reacting a bit here. Looking at some photographs it is bigger alright but not by that much, especially visible in the shot of the guy holding it in his hand, assuming he has average size hands.

I'm sure that WYSIWYG may not apply here and that the finished product may look somewhat different, at least I am open to that possiblity.

I personally like it and I am thrilled that Oly have now publically come out and committed to it. Like everyone else I would love to hear something about the specs etc and maybe we'll be thrown a few tidbits over the next few days?

Anyways, it's great news and congrats Oly on finally going this route. Let's wait and see what is produced on the shelf

to speed up the mirror and more powerful batteries to support
the motors, and to have room for this, the camera probably has to
be made bigger.

I'm not sure I like the design (if it's the way it will look) but they
sure are brave, can't take that away from them.

Ok, I guess the wedding photographers, street photographers, portrait photographers and glamour/fashion photographers need to have a cool looking piece of equipment to maintain their credibility.

No one will be looking at me in the middle of the woods while I'm taking my landscape/nature pictures so I guess I will just get a little bonus by having a nice looking camera that I can fondle.

I use to be an avid woodworker and still dabble in it. Some guys go out and spend hundreds and even thousand of dollars on tools with highly polished brass and exotic wood trim. If you showed those tools to a professional woodwood worker they would laugh.

hmmmm touch screen ? thats interesting but i dont think so its possible unless its a 3.5" display screen, otherwise too congested.

I can't believe that they came up with a BIGGER camera than an E-1
plus power grip.

Compare it to a Nikon D80, or even a D200 and it seems to be
bigger, despite their larger sensors.
The mockup is the actually about the same height and width as an E-1.

Hi Jon,
I think it looks very well thought out. The placement of buttons,
even the two to the extreme right (rear) which is cut smooth to the
surface, gives the impression of a design that is mature and close
to final. I love it! Looks like darth vadars cam.
To me it looks like Batman's camera. While I can pretty much account for most buttons the missing focus switch and mode dial, I have no idea about:

remote shutter release connector
flash sync connector
Focus assist light
front remote sensor
rear remote sensor (please!)
WB sensor
media compartment and door release latch

I think they still have a ways to go. Not a bad start though.

You'd only be able to change settings when it was in the home position... when it was flipped out, you'd have to support the back of it as you pressed.

It's a good Idea but I'm not sure how practical it is.

Everyone raves over the ergonomics of the E-1, why does Olympus need to change the body for the sucessor?

Couldn't they keep the body and just update the components? Wouldn't that save money in R&D?

They couldn't fit the LV hump in the E1 prism hump! The E1 ends with a hotshoe and then there's a vertical incline and a viewfinder.. so there's no space.
