Further News from SIGMA - another cam in the Pipe - the DP1

The sad part is Sigma should have thought of this so you don't have too.
They should have put an optical viewfinder in the camera.
I've last 20 minutes trying to figure out away to attach a good
28mm finder to this otherwise dream camera for me .

Like what Ricoh did with GR digital:

It looks like the only option would be to custom make a ring like
thing with a hot shoe and somehow attach it to base of the lens.

Any other idea ?

I have used digital p&s with the LCD and for me the only time I found it helpful was when shooting low or high and getting an angle on it. So yes I would find the Zigview helpful in those situations. But in everyday shooting I have found the LCD to be too low resolution to give an accurate focus or exposure indication.

I agree no hotshoe seems like a mistake as well. Both choices not doubt are cost cutting decisions.
A live preview is very handy. It is useful in many cases. So much
really so I am considering a Zigview.

But - no hotshoe and no viewfinder are two high prices to pay for a
high quality camera IMHO.

Looks like an Epson / Voigtylander RD1 with a Sigma 12-24 on the front ;-) .. Look forward to seeing more of the DP1 !!!

It looked more rangefindery from the front ....... No Viewfinder :(

More like a Digital Ricoh GR1. Both in specs and in looks.

And probably a much better camera than the GR1D thanks to the far bigger sensor.

.. moving subjects framing with a LCD is an disaster, this camera
is "Spielerei" (= playing with a toy),
the big question is how well it is implement, maybe we should all
wait for that before jumping to any conclusions.
As well as it may be implemented, I hate not having a viewfinder, even an EVF. My first digicam was the excellent Fuji s6900Z which had the LCD and an EVF. I can count on one hand the number of times I used the LCD to shoot. I never got used to using it but at at the right price, I'd be willing to give this one a try as long as the image quality is good.

Wow, after the hopelessly unsuccessfull Polaroid x530 I'd like to get my hands around that one!

I love banging my head with a hammer...
...it feels so damn' great when I stop!

Sorry, got annoyed offering this great put down because of one detail. Hot shoe would have been a good idea. To me this could be the ultimate back-up camera. Keeping it as compact as possible is also a good feature to many. But it does not matter to me much if this had only viewfinder or only LCD or whatever as long as it's a ps with Foveon dslr sensor.

Dont get me wrong, I love this camera . In fact I've been waiting for something like this for quite sometime now .

Now it's either this or a R-D1s with a 28 1.9 voigtlander . Leica M8's just a pipe dream for me.

I will probably go with this Sigma if the lens is half way decent. It's not going to be that hard to attach a finder to it .I am pretty good with making metal stuff. I like holding the camera against my eye with elbow tucked in . I feel more comfortable that way.

I am OK with not having a finder built-in , cause there is trade-off in size and everything. What I don't understand is the decision to not to have a hot shoe. It costs nothing , occupies very little space.

I just hope this product line continues , and maybe they get it right next time around.

that you have not used a quality rangefinder or p&s camera. If you
want to learn about it search for Leica, Contax, Rollei film
cameras to name just 3.
I have used a Leica rangefinder (a few times, briefly).

I have used fil P&S cameras with good viewfinders.

I see the problem now, you really wanted a rangefinder. I would have liked that myself. But it is not a rangefinder, it is a P&S digital camera. On that I can see absolutley no use for a viewfinder because (A) it is not looking through the lens and so can offer no focus or exposure details, and (b) is less convienient than simply looking at the LCD. I have a small P&S digital as well that I used for some time that does have a viewfinder, and after the first month or so I simply did not use it at all.

Ever held a Leica? It's possible to build a nice optical VF
(particularly if you only have a fixed lens!) It just costs money.
Heck, they could even offer one as an accessory like the Ricoh.
Yes I have used a Leica. But I still see no point in looking through a small tiny bit of optic that has no relation to what the camera itself is seeing, whcih is what you would get if Sigma attached a viewfinder to this camera. For small digital P&S cameras I greatly prefer the LCD preivew.

I am curious just how the Ricoh operates though, I have not seen that in person... perhaps I could be convinced.

For those with good vision you can look forward to, slow response
from the screen compared to an optical viewfinder and missed shots
because of it. Enjoy!

For those with poor close vision, enjoy constantly putting glasses
on and taking glasses off, fumbling around and missing shots.
Enjoy!

Sigma...put an optical viewfinder on the camera and I will at least
consider it.
My eyes are not to good and I know about the problem with glasses, being nearsighted and farsighted at the same time + a lazy right eye. With sd10 I don't wear glasses and when I shoot manual I go for the least blurry view in the viewfinder. That's an art:-) Recently I got myself a pair of screenglasses and they've improved my vision between 50 and 75 cm very much. I was thinking of wearing those with the p&s camera and not looking directly at the scenery but via the live LCD. Modern p&s are not slow I find when you use them for framing, so I think there will be no problem with glasses on and off - except when I leave the scene and have to take off the glasses again- well I'm used to blurry orientation anyway so I might just leave them on:-)
