I have a G1 and may be getting a G2 soon. I find the built in flash close to worthless. I'm wondering what people here would recommend for an external flash, which one? and Where to buy it for a good price??

The Canon speedlite 420EX is the most recommended flash on this forum. Do a check at pricegrabber.com for the best deal. The last time I looked, Abe's of Maine was selling it at a good price.

I purchased my 420 EX locally for $199.00 and pricematched with AMEX blue down to $149.99. I have a great flash from a local dealer with the benefit of the lowest price we could find within the forum. I have the best of all worlds.

You'll love the 420 with your G1/G2.
I second the choice of a 420EX. Makes the camera top heavy (as
would most any flash) but it compliments the camera perfectly.

Lisa,

I never heard back from you or others in that thread. Did AMEX accept the low price ad from Royal Camera even though their website was substantially higher. Let us know.

Another consideration would be the the Sunpak 383($70 B&H) or other manual flashes. Yet you would not have any auto E-TTL features. See:

Derek:

They advertise that they accept prices in print. Coming from the magazine, it can't be any clearer in print. The CSR that I dealt with confirmed with his supervisor that he could accept the magazine ad as long as I provided a copy of the cover as well as the Royal ad. I don't expect any problem from AMEX on this. I'll let you know as soon as I confirm that my check is on the way.

Thanks Lisa,

That is a great price on the 420ex. I think it was that thread that changed my mind on wether or not to buy a 420ex. I couldn't get myself to spend the retail price($200+) on that flash when I could get a good manual(sunpak383) for $70. I would also have to admit that many of the sample 420ex holiday portrait shots on this forum have been very persuasive as well.

I took a ton of test shots with the 420 trying to force red eye in my photos. I'm happy to say that I didn't have one incident of red eye. I'll probably invest in a Lumiquest ProMax or an omni-bounce. I have cathedral ceilings in my living room -- nothing much to bounce off of there. You'll be pleased with the result you obtain using the 420.

Somebody please tell me about this price matching the AMEX blue? How did you get the price of the 420 down to $149?

Thanks!

If it's one or the other, I'd recommend the Lumiquest ProMax. Much more flexible than the omni-bounce.

The Omni-bounce is more convenient; it just pops on and you don't have to attach velcro strips to your flash. But for results, it's ProMax.

Thanks eg for your input. I was actually set to purchase the ProMax with the flash but my dealer was out of them. He tried to talk me into the omni-bounce (which also was out of stock). I like the options of the ProMax and love their website for display of with/without pictures.
