My D70 is working just fine--Why do I want the D80

My D70 works great for me, I take mostly sports shots using the 70-200VR. Will the D80 focus faster then my D70? The larger image size will help with croping images, but how much. Maybe its just a case of camers lust, I think I might wait a few years for the next great thing.

I agree. The main purpose might be to upgrade and use the D70 as a back-up or a second body to keep from having to constantly switch lenses.

Friends,

I got the call today from the camerashop. My D80 has come in, if I want it. I'm first on the list.

Honestly, I can't figure out why I need it. 10MP, so what..6MP makes a great 13x19. Why do I need more? Croping? Please, I crop when I take the shot.

Please tell me why I should upgrade. Don't give me a long list of new features. Call me basic, but the D70 is great. How will the D70 help me take a better picture?

Thanks

Brian

My D70 is fine but I've got camera lust. My D80 has shipped from Ritz Camera. I just don't know what to do with the D70. It's not the D70s. I probably won't get more than $300-400 for it. I could use it as a 'backup' but honestly it would probably just sit in my camera bag. It's the same dilemma about the 17-70 lens. It just sits in my bag. I probably won't get more than $150 for it.

at this point it is sad to say, but I am much more of a limiting factor than my D70 is. I have fanatic glass, I never print larger than A4 and even if I crop my D70 gives me great images. Would I like a brighter view finder and perhaps better AF? - sure I would, but not for $1,000. if my camera died tomorrow I might get a D80, I might get a D50. when it comes time to upgrade I want the difference to be bigger

I have the D70, but I need a backup. If I bought the D80, the D70 will be my backup and my wife will use it. I would buy the D80 for the 2.5 inch LCD, 11 focus sensors instead of 5. The D200 viewfinder and improved focus & shutter speed. Smaller and lighter size. And yes, hopefully better high ISO perfomance. I shoot most of my shots at ISO 1000 and I need less high ISO noise then my D70, not worst like the D200.

Why I wouldn't buy it, it's a 10 mp. I like 6MP, 8 would be OK. Don't care for the large file size. Also, it uses SD cards. Great, more cards to buy. Also, the D80 will not work with NC. Now I have to buy NX to shoot RAW.

If you don't need the above reasons to buy, then don't get it.

If you have a nice sharp prime like the 85mm, and you have good technique, you can effectively make it a longer lens by cropping the central area. You get more from the primes you have.

You choose what size you need at any given moment, but you have the option of going 10 MP when you need to.

I've got the feeling that when people go to their camera store and check out the D80, the D70 will be harder to pick up again. For backup, you're better off with the D50 since it also uses SD cards.

If you shoot sports and the images are important to you, then the D80 will be a much better tool to use. The difference between the CAM-900 and CAM-1000 AF systems is huge.

And no, you cannot crop all of your shots as you shoot, since we ALL never have the perfect lens for every situation. 10 megapixels makes that a little easier.

I keep my D70 as a backup to my D200, but I can say that the AF and increased resolution are worth it.

You will want to use NX regardless, it is VASTLY superior to NC. In fact, in many ways it beats PS in power and flexibility.

For the $89 upgrade price, it is an absolute bargain.

More pixels mean more than just better cropping. You have more pixels to pick up subtle tonal variations, giving an apparent bump in dynamic range. This assumes you have a lens that can pick up those variations.

It also means being able to manipulate images in post with less potential damage. You have more pixels to throw away before "banding", etc.

The D80 also has a low ISO of 100. I haven't seen any reviews to support it, but the D80 at 100 ISO should have less noise than the D70 at 200 ISO.

It all comes down to - do you have the bucks to spend? It is a significant upgrade, but how much is that worth to you?

I'm considering purchasing the 17-70 as my all-around lens. Could you explain why you don't you it? Are you not using it and instead using the 18-200? I know it's not the best glass out there by any means, but elaborating could be helpful.

The amount of noise at the Native 200 (d70) and 100 (d80) is largely a subjective opinion. What is more important is:

1. 100 ISO is better for slower shutter speeds without having to use a ND fiulter (think waterfall pictures)

2. 100 ISO is better for daylight fill-flash, especially considering the lower Flash-synch speed of the D80. (All of us D70 owners need to relish the 1/500th synch speed!!)

The D200 and the D80 Share most of the D2x processing engine, and therefore the camera produces more accurate colors, especially in skintones. I've seen Great skin tones on the D70 but they are far and few in between and I see immaculate skin tones on the D200, the D2X and the best skin tones of any nikon I've seen is on a 4 megapixel D2Hs. Just a personal preference. I'm Not saying that the D70 isn't capable of getting great skin tones, it's just that it seems much more difficult to do so on the D70. (perhaps due to the fact that it's sensitive to UV?) I don't know, I'm rambling here. The D70 is a fine cam though, and I think your decision to keep it is a smart one. kudos mate.

The real upgrade would be a D200 for the 5fps. Or if you really want a dedicated sports camera, get a used D2h for about $1,200 or wait for the D3h and get a D2h for under $1,000 :-)

If I were shooting sport I wouldn't even take the upgrade into consideration, but the fancy commander onboard flash options are good for people shots if you don't want to carry 2 flashes. Also, the big lcd is tempting for those who, like me, have trouble checking focus.

Having said that, I might wait for the next thing as well and eventually invest in the lens department
