I recently purchased a new 3Gbyte Digital Wallet (which is actually a 5Gb IBM drive - must have got a deal on them...) and a Sony PC card adapter (MSAC-PS2). The original firmware was unable to read or acknowledge this Sony adapter (…error with PC card reported). I noted that Phil has addressed this issue in his review of the Digital Wallet.

I upgraded the firmware to V2.0 and the Sony PC card became readable. I have successfully downloaded my files from my Sony memory stick via the PC card adapter. So, it appears that Minds@work have fixed this problem with the MSAC-PS2 in the new firmware upgrade. Hurray! I'm happy!

PS. I found the upgrade to be very smooth. Just heed the advise from Minds@work:

Why did the upgrade fail?

There a are few possible reasons. It is important that the firmware software is properly copied to the root directory of the Digital Wallet. The file M$A$W$. D$W is the correct file. This file needs to be copied to the root directory of the Digital Wallet and must be intact. If the file is corrupted, damaged or altered it will fail to upgrade. --Regards

I have a digital wallet too. I love it. I bought a 64MB memory stick. When it is full, I put it into the digital wallet to download. I use the 16MB stick until it does. I have gone back and forth and taken about 500 pics in 2-3 hours. It really works well.

Word of advice on the updating the firmware - make sure that the file name is intact when copied to the Wallet.

I updated mine immediately upon firing it up the first time. However, I kept having problems with the downloads - only 2 successful out of like 30 attempts. Re-copied the firmware a couple of times, did this, did that, blah, blah, blah, still no luck...

Finally I checked the version and saw that I was still on 1.92. Then I noticed that the file name was messed up - M$A$W$..D$W.D$W or some such garbage. I corrected the file name and, voila, it worked.

I have no idea whether this was operator error or another attempt by Windows to drive me insane...

The Wallet has been flawless since and the new functionality of the update is terrific.

I'm a Mac man , so can't speak for you wintel guys.

I found that if you had any other version lurking in the same folder/root directory, my Mac kindly renamed the new firmware with an extra 1 and it took mr a couple of drage and drops to realise what I was doing.

Does that help?

Had one very briefly. Absolutely hated it. Clumsy to use and very user unfriendly. I'm trying to unload it.

This is interesting. I have yet to read the manual but on New Years Eve I was able to use it in the dark without a flashlight. Could something be wrong with yours? All I do is put the memory stick in the PCMCIA adapter. Put that in the Digital Wallet, turn it on and press the select button. Then turn it off. Take the memory stick out and put back in the camera. And format. Takes about 1.5 minutes for the 64 meg card.

Hi guys,

I'm considering a digital wallet, but I have one reservation that scares the begeebies out of me. While shooting with a stick, you see the pictures right then and there, and know that you have captured the shot. My concern (and it does scare me) is that I'll shoot 100 shots on my stick, shove them into the DW, repeat, repeat, repeat, and then go to download the DW and find there is nothing there.

Is this possible? Is it foolproof as long as you put the stick in correctly? I couldn't handle the disappointment of losing a few hundred shots, I'd rather stay with sticks, even at the expense.

I'm probably over paranoid, but need a little reassurance.

Thanks, Jim

The newest update confirms the download has taken place, showing you the folder that the photos were downloaded to and the size of the folder. I absolutely love my DW, and have not had any problems.

Shutter:

The Digital Wallet is just an external hard drive with a scaled down LCD and operating system. After you download your camera files, you can check the files - you see them in the directories - complete with file sizes and dates. The download is very straightforward - you simply select "download" and wait. The Digital Wallet creates a new directory for each download (automatically) and loads the entire directory structure and all files from your camera. There is no way to overwrite any previous downloads as they each go in a new directory - even if you can't remember if you downloaded a memory stick, if you download it again, it is placed in a new directory and does not affect the first download. My only concern at this point would be a hard drive failure (which could never happen right??! - oh well gotta take some risks in life....)

I feel compelled to respond to your message as I very much disagree with your conclusions. I was amazed at how easy it is to use - did you upgrade the firmware to V2.0? V2.0 seems alot more intuitive. The entire process consist of connecting your memory stick to the wallet, select "download", wait, pull out the memory stick, plug in the USB to your PC, in the file Explorer the wallet simply appears as another hard drive, copy the files to your PC. How is this clumsy or unfriendly?

I disagree. Still think it's an awful product. You can't view images on the Wallet. The controls are very awkward and flimsy. Firmware upgrade didn't work for me on my PC but that shouldn't be necessary in the first place on a "new" product. I would rather just stay with my additional memory sticks, despite the cost. I brought 6 memory sticks on a recent cruise and only used 3, so I was OK with that. Glad it's worked out for others, though.

Looks real cool too. I needed something right now and for the price of two 128Mg sticks ( 100pictures) I got 5Gb ( 3800pictures). You can transfer photos from the wallet back to your memory stick if you want to view them in your camera again...

Fair enough, you are entitled to your views! Thanks for your input.

Just to let you know, I'm not getting any commission on DW sales... six memory sticks would cost me $1200CDN, where as the DW and PC card adapter cost $425CDN.

Yeah Deb, I noticed that myself... but you CAN connect by USB (just like connecting the camera to the computer). Assuming that the unit can download from the camera through USB, lack of memory stick slot wouldn't be a problem. I've written to them also to inquire more about this.

Also, they DO have a PC Card adaptor kit for the unit. So theoretically, you'd be able to do the same thing as done with the current digital wallets.

If you find anything out, let us know... and I'll do the same :)
