Who's Staying...Who's Leaving?...Cont.

I've always enjoyed your posts and photos. Hope you'll hang around even if you sell off your Minolta gear.

I know what I see and can do now. Pros and serious amateurs are
leaving this camp in droves because the things Sony has planned for
the future are things you can get with other companies right now.
AS in body... only Pentax not any of the leading brands
First DLSR with 10MP under $1000
Zeiss and Sony(KM) quality lenses

What can I get with other companies now?
IS/ VR lenses that cost more and don't come in all ranges?

Maybe it is $200 extra for a wireless flash option you see as a benefit now, except I don't think Sony is planning to make you pay more for that in teh future.

Impatient people are leaving in droves... The phrase "The grass is always greener.." was invented before Sony.. it is a human trait to assume there is something better over there. It is why wars are fought over patches of dessert..

It is also a human traight to try to blame problems on another person or thing. A good photographer Amatuer or Pro has all the tools they need in a 7D or 5D to create great images. If your images are lacking on KM, you will not find better ones on Canon...
You are talking about the past. I am talking about the now and the
immediate future.
I am talking about NOW as in Sony is a leading provider of Advanded Pro and Industrial Imaging equipment on the Video side, not just a consumer company as you tried to peg them. So I am not sure where you get "the past." It sounds like more excuses for making your decision and blaming it on Sony.

Just go and own it.
If you are an casual amateur, you can afford to wait but, if you
are a more serious camera user,...well, you have to decide for
yourself
I have not seen a camera I want more than my KM 5D right now. That includes a $599 7D or even a 30D. For features, image quality, lens options all stablized there isn't a better system (7D/5D/A100).

I can't afford to be impatient. I will wait until there is clearly a better camera for taking pictures, not just comparing spec sheets and who is on the sidelines at a football game or pixel peeping.

For every impatient KM owner leaving Sony is probably picking up 20 owners that would have bought a Canon or Nikon as they move into a DLSR.. so all we ask is that you place a low reserve on your stuff when you sell it on ebay.. have a nice life whereever you go.

I am quite glad waiting to see what one of the leading makers or pro imaging equipment in the industry has planned in the next few months, meanwhile I will just keep taking pictures with a good camera now.

I wonder how much that would add to the cost especially with AS and full-frame. That would be wonderful for Sony and 7D users looking for its replacement.

Cheers,

I'll take the knobs and dials any day over weathersealing. Long after the weathersealing becomes leaky, the knobs and dials will still be useful.

Well, I just today ordered an entire new Nikon kit based around the D200 with an 18-200 f3.5-5.6 VR AF-S lens (vibration reduction and sonic wave motor) and vertical grip. I also ordered a Sigma 120-300 f2.8 DG HSM and Sigma 28-70 f2.8 and a Sigma 2x TC. I'll be picking it up at a friend's place in New Jersey. I'm from Ottawa and between avoiding both of our sales taxes and just the sheer price differential, I saved about C$2300.00 by doing this. So my wife and I will get, essentially, an all-expense paid trip to NYC out of this.

I'm switching because my 7D succumbed to the known problem of the AS module dying from heat and/or humidity and taking the whole camera with it. I've been told it's unrepairable so I'm hoping that I'll get some kind of refund that others have managed to wrangle out of Sony. The A100 just wasn't going to be good enough for my needs, especially without grip.

I decided on the D200 because of its environmental seals, 5fps and great ergonomics. I tried one and was more impressed than I assumed I'd be after having owned the 7D. I guess my KM stuff either goes on eBay or gets sold to a friend who just bought the A100. One bonus is that now I can own that Sigma 120-300 that I've long coveted. My wife and I do a lot of 'adventure' travel and that will be a most welcome lens - especially with the 2x TC. Geez, that's the equivalent of a 900mm on a film camera. I'll really need to have my monopod with me for that. I had no real hope that anything like that lens would ever be produced for the A-mount because I don't think a screw drive could propel such big glass. I tried a Tokina (I think) 300 f2.8 and it was sloooow. I pick the whole kit up on September 01 and I'm just dying to try that big lens, even if it does weigh in at a shade under 6 pounds.

Good luck and happy photography to all. Please go easy in these forums on others who have different gear and opinions than you. As has been said, life's too short for that.

But let's get real, all of us photography fans put too much stock in the equipment. The photographer's skills are more important than the equipment; yes, good tools help, but skill is more important.

Vance with a Casio would take better wedding pictures than me with a full frame Canon.

Still, for me, nobody else has made a camera that fits as well as the 7D with its ergonomics, AS, overall feel, etc, and I haven't hit its limitations (unlike Vance and José). Besides, I don't have the budget that many people seem to have.

For a working photographer, I can see why it could be frustrating. We know Sony can make professional equipment, but have yet to see them do it in the digicam market.

Just to replace my Minolta 600/4 with a Canon or Nikon lens, or even the shorter 500/4 versions (more likely for a cropped format camera) will likely cost me several thousand dollars, and that assumes I can sell my 600/4 to off set part of that. Add in a 300/2.8, another few thousands to replace, offset a little by selling my lens, all the other lenses, bodies, flashes, etc., and I am willing to give Sony a little more time. I would love to hear something at Photokina, even if it's not for release until early next year. The latest I will likely wait is PMA 2007 (February). After that, if no satisfaction, it's bye-bye KM, hello Nikon, or maybe Canon, but I prefer the D200 over the 30D, and its flash system is better for event work. But, Canon has more IS lenses. Not being able to make that decision is another reason I'm willing to wait a little longer, to also see what Canon and Nikon announce.

The biggest annoyance to me of the 7D is inconsistent flash exposures when using the 5600HS with light modifiers. Second on the list is AF performance, while third is shooting speed (3 fps max) and limited buffer size. Address these issues in a body in the D200/30D class, with 7D type ergonomics (definitely not A100 ergonomics), and I'll likely stick with the system. But, one other concern is a lack of replacement glass for if/when my 600/4 goes down. Nothing longer than 300/2.8 from Sony, and that's at a ridiculous price. Nikon has the 200-400/4 VR or 300/2.8 VR (or maybe the Sigma 120-300/2.8 mentioned by someone else), Canon has a slightly less expensive 300/2.8 IS (and there's still the Sigma option). And, who knows what may come forth at Photokina or PMA (Nikon needs at some point to address the lack of VR glass in its 500/600 range).

I really feel for those of you with such expensive lenses (600mm f4, 300mm f2.8, etc.). For the kind of photography you do you need that really expensive stuff and you are pretty much locked into a single camera brand. I sure hope Sony comes through with something nice in the next 6-12 months. Minolta/KM/Sony users are always waiting, waiting, waiting and hoping not to be disappointed.

Fortunately, for me I don't need the really expensive lenses because of the size and weight. When I travel with my backpack I have to go for gear that isn't too big or heavy. By trying to be careful about what I choose and trying to shoot at the better apertures most of the time I get photo quality pretty close to some of the more expensive lenses. When I shoot around home or travel by car the extra size and weight is, of course, less of a concern.

Congratulations on your new gear!

That Sigma lens looks very sweet, ideal for sports and probably at the zoo. I guess I have to go to the Nikon forum to see your pics with it :-)

The body, shutter/mirror sound and feel, iTTL flash (if you use flash you'll go nuts w/delight), and you will enjoy the through viewfinder visual of a stabilized image.

There are a set of recommended "settings" for Jpeg shooting on Nikonians.org which I recommend you use (at least for starting points). Among others, there is a "Pierre" on the Nikon D1/2 and D50/70/80 forums that uses them on his D200 and gets some extremely nice jpegs (that in fact is all he shoots - never shoots raw and his results are stunning).

I've begun using them after a couple of months of playing w/multipe setting combinations and am very pleased w/the result. Also you can use all your Nikon stuff w/the Fuji S2/S3 bodies if you enjoy that image quality as an alternative. I got a S3 too and am really enjoying it too.

Congrat's.

... Sigma 120-300 as well as the TC. Thanks.

That is one setup I have been looking at for my D200. I like the 18-200 Creepe a lot and it has been making lens puchase decisions deficult as it does most things well enough for me especially off the cuff hand held shooting.

Also 18mm is wide but looking at maybe a 10-20 together with the 120-300 to bracket my Creeper.

Best of luck. Shame about the 7D. Actually shame that KM could not live on as while SONY can give survival, they do not have the Mind.

For work in 45 mins and Im going to keep using my 5d it does what I bought it for but I may buy in to another system but the Minolta Stays and if I can get a 5d for a reasonable price id take it, apart from Oly who else has nice colours?

I hope to hang out here once and
a while if I am not roasted for doing so.
People need to lighten up a bit. Brand loyalty is fine but as many others have pointed out, it doesn't matter what gear you have, they're all just tools to get the job done and how well the job turns out has much more to do with the person behind the tool than the brand of tool used. I've owned photo gear from many different companies and have enjoyed most in one way or another. It happens that the Minolta 7D fits my current needs well and brought me back to the joys of photography after a brief absence. In the future, there will no doubt be something else to replace the 7D. I'd love for it to be compatible with my current lenses but if it doesn't, I'm not afraid to start over again.

Where should I leave to?

I need good low-light capability, for an affordable price...
So... Canon CMOS or Minolta AS.

I need good ergonomics.
So... not the Rebel's handgrip :)

And who knows, maybe the next Sony will be the ideal low-light camera: they make sensors, they could (can?) make CMOS too... so what about a low-noise CMOS combined with AS? :)

However, as for me, for a year or two, sure I don't have money for equipment. So I just stay with what I already have right now.
