If an EF-S lens was on a 1.3x, How many true pixels?

Let's say that the new camera is 10MP, but has a 1.3x crop factor,
what effect will an EF-S lens have on such a camera?
A broken mirror. There's no reason to even contemplate the question.

The EF-s lenses won't physically mount to a camera not compatible with them.

Well, I suppose you could force it or something. If you do that, you deserve a broken mirror.

EF-S lens mount won't fit on a 1.3x camera. However, other 1.6x lenses such as Sigma 18-50 will fit and give you an image like this at 18mm:

..and like this at 50mm:

First, not really - you can use an extension tube, but you will lose infinity focus.
Second - why? It will vignette on a 1.3x anyway.

I actually like the photos. A bit dark corners are actually good.

Depends on the subject. Works pretty well for low light interior shots, would not be good for landscapes.

Hi, A,
Since an EF-S lens covers the entire sensor of a 1.6x crop camera,
how much does it cover on a 1.3x crop?
This of course assumes that then lens had been modified to actually fit on such a body (whcih a stock EF-S lens would not), and that the mirrors would still work (which they might not).

The answer is not certain, because the size of the image circle varies between different EF-S lenses, with the focal length setting, and so forth.

Best regards,

Doug

I don't mean to be dismissive but if the 20D and/or replacement is EF-S compatible then why allow the body to take shots with, what I expect would be, terrible edges.

As far as I'm concerned 1.3 is dead. If I wanted 1.3 I would buy a 5D and crop myself - that way, if I'm shooting action I stand a better chance of getting it in frame.

1.3 was always a halfway house but is now unnecesary. If you can settle for a crop it may as well be 1.6. Why make an inbetween?

A 1.3 crop would allow more pixels whilst maintaining reasonable pixel size. However, the investment in EF-S lenses and now the 5D means that there will probably never be another 1.3 Canon camera.

Have you exact data for this. The EF-S lens does not go so deep into the body. A FF mirror would proke for sure, but at least I have no info about how big the sensor and thus the mirror can max be to still "fit in".

But admit I have no spec of the EF-S either - and only one EF-S lens so not way to make any "conslusive measurements".

Agree, but if we could fit the mirror in, Canon could also make a sensor to detect the EF-S lens and "auto-crop" the image to "meet the lens". Hopefully behind a CF so that you can force the camera to work with e.g. Sigma APS lenses and also to give you the oportunity to take the full imafe even with EF-S lenses is you wish so.

So necessary no penalty - but of course only if the mirror really could be fitted in.

A redisign of the mount and mirror assembly, and what you'd gain from doing this, I'm not sure. I suppose the only gain is that you'd be able to buy a ID or ID MK II and use your S-series lenses, as a previous poster said, it appears that 1.3 sensors are on the way out anyway.

But not to worry, 1.6 crop Canon cameras are here to stay for a long time, and there will be more new models on which we can use our S-lenses.

I've really been interested in the idea of a pelical mirror on a DSLR. As one previous poster mentioned, if the camera could detect the EF-S, it could auto-crop. Though I would prefer to crop manually (probably have a CF to shut off auto-crop). Just a thought.
