I took 10 pictures of my 6 months old twins niece and nephew pictures last weekend. 10 out of 10 are not in focus!! I posted one up with EXIF. How can I take one...just one clear picture? Your suggestions and comments are welcome!

Your shooting information shows 1/10 second shutter speed. Did you use a tripod?

If you can't use the tripod, turn on your flash. You can't take hand-held no-flash photos in low light.

Cute babies, by the way.

Your picture is blurred not because of a focus problem but because of camera shake. Your EXIF data indicates a shutter speed of a tenth of a second. That's too slow to handhold.

Fixes:

1) shoot at a higher shutter speed (I think the G2 manual recommends at least a 1/60 of a second) by increasing the ISO rating (but watch out for more noise in your pictures) or by using the flash.

2) use a tripod or something other means to support the camera.

Cute kids, by the way.

Good Luck!

hi, it also looks like it is focusing in-between the two kids...you can try choosing an alternate focusing point. also try shooting in Tv mode with at least 1/100 shutter speed and an ISO of 100 instead of the default 50. of course, a tripod should do the trick.

fpw, you asked the same question 2 days ago:

I thought the responses you got were quite good, as the ones you received above. You didn't believe us the first time?

I'll try this setting this weekend. I wish G2 has a function to view the real picture right after taken the shots. The shot on the LCD always shows clear picture.

No. I will take all your responses in my mind when I take the pictures this weekend. I didn't post the picture on my last thread 2 days ago, so I open a new thread with the picture link posted.

I really appreciate dpreview.com. I learnt a lot from this forum!

There actually is a way... Right after you take the pictures switch to preview mode and select the picture you just took. You can use the zoom to zoom in and out of the photo.

Its clear that the shutter speed is to slow for a hand held shot and at 1/10 even if the kids more a little it will still be blurry with a trypod. IMO the best way to get the most out of your canon is to buy a 420ex and bounce flash. I think you would be amazed.

Are you sure you were not focusing the couch? Lock the focus to one of the babies first.

fpw,

You probably have enough answers by now. Just to clarify, you should never try to hand hold the camera with a shutter speed of 1/100 sec or 1/the focal length (35mm) unless you have hands and arms like a vise. A tripod is useful for slower shutter speeds, but only for subjects that stay still. Unless your kids sit a lot stiller than mine ever did you really need a flash for indoor shots. Good Luck!

Cute kids. Don't hand old under 1/30.

I think your primary problem is that you were too close to focus without macro mode. When you're within a few feet, you need to turn on macro mode otherwise it won't focus properly.

I think this is your problem, because nothing is in focus in this picture. Nothing in the foreground, nothing in the background, not your children.

If it's still blurred after macro mode is enabled, try shooting with a faster shutter speed. You may be getting motion blur (but probably not).

Although it's been advised to turn on the flash, you should be aware that flashes at short range can cause corneal burns. The manual specifically warns against firing the flash close to infants' eyes, and gives a dangerous range of 1 meter.

So you may want to consider taking the picture from further away.
