I'm still longing for the dpreview's Konica Minolta Digital Cameras "FULL PREVIEW" of the 5D...
Thanks from Valerie (Italy)

I understand the interest but its my guess that it will never come. Phil has not got the inclination or the capacity to deal with all necessary reviews. My guess is the next review of KM cameras will be on the updated version of the 7D & even that can't be taken for granted !

For those waiting for a review - DCResource should publish their review of KM 5D in January (according to their "Recent & Upcoming Reviews" page). I found their reviews quite good.

BTW, I'm wondering - couldn't DPReview publish some "Upcoming Reviews" page?

Cheers,

I believe Phil confirmed that dpreview had had a 5D for some time earlier last autumn. Simon Grimshaw is not identical to Simon Joinson.. ;-)

However, there have been several interesting releases this last half year, and with the workload, there must be a need to prioritise. If they choose to see the 5D as a slightly shrunk and feature reduced 7D, this might put it behind certain other offerings of late..?

I just think Phil doesn't like Minoltas anyway. He seems to have always been a Canon fan. Nothing wrong with that, everyone is entitled to their preferences!

Question about Steve's review. He writes:

"Minolta claims that the 5D's Anti-shake will help you capture blur-free images at shutter speeds two to three stops slower than the 1/focal-length rule of thumb, and my experience agreed. Shooting with the 18-70mm AF zoom at full telephoto, a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 105mm, I was able to capture consistently blur-free images at 1/25 second, a 2 stop improvement over the rule of thumb 1/100 second. At a shutter speed of 1/13 second, about half the images were blur-free."

Now, why would he have to take the 35mm-equivalent into consideration? Isn't the physical focal length for the rule of thumb 70mm? I thought the 35mm-equiv was really a crop. I could be wrong.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Yes it is "just" a crop. The usual logic is: because the sensor is smaller than a 35mm negative more enlargement is needed to get a printed image of a certain size. Therefore the image on/from the sensor needs to be sharper. So the rule of thumb shutter speed goes up with the crop factor.

I don't know but full reviews of
Canon EOS-1DS, EOS-300D, EOS-1D MARK2, EOD-20D, EOS-1DS MARK2, EOS-350D, EOS-5D,

I think reviews lean towards Caonon......

They did miss the EOS-20Da He! He!

Sure, but if you are running a unbiased public service you should put your preferences aside.

Although I respect Phils point of reviewing the cameras that get the most attention (a.k.a the market leader) I have to say that the current market situation is approaching an un-healthy dominance. When one brand has such a strong postition, the leader easily becomes arrogant and starts to undermine the consumer needs. This is why I think that the underdogs should have more attention from those who the customers respect. The market leader gets enough attention anyway.

This site has a lot of leverage among the net-literate consumers and dpeview should not be just another site helping Canon overtake the market. Healthy competition is good for all of us and we should do all we can to help the smaller brands stay in business.

I do believe he's a little......... at us. I did just look at the Canon review dates and it looks like the Canon 5D was the only review in August from Canon DSLR. The KM 5D was out in July 05, I own a 7D but would like to see a review of the 5D and also I'm Phil does know but this site is a tremendous sales tool for people who are in the market for a new purchase. I’ll be the first one to say, well maybe not the first one but I have asked Phil Bradon why KM doesn’t get more advertising and get these cameras out on the market in more stores. A camera like the 5D should be all over the place….. and there web site needs a face lift… Just my 2cents… Mike

The KM 5D is currently equal on my list with the DSC-R1, the only difference is that I have HALF the review of the R1 finished already. I will be working on both reviews but am likely to post the R1 first simply because it's more complete.

Great so I'll strike the KM 5D off my list... One less D-SLR to review.

About Phil's priority review policy:
I prioritize the cameras which are generating the most interest, are being discussed the most and which I have the most work complete on. You'd have to be wearing KM branded blinkers not to see how much interest there has been over the EOS 5D, and the DSC-R1 which is likely to be my next review.

Long Time too wait and I thing we don't see never a full depth review with KM D5D..... This is maybe Canon strategy? KMD5D is too good?

Interesting...Makes sense to me. After all, it is just a rule of thumb. Thanks!

I would say you are correct.

Although, every magazine that exists for camera... and a few others... have done a test of the KM5D... I just picked up the latest Shutterbug magazine that tests BOTH the 5D's that exist (C & KM). They were very impressed with the camera... and did tests of its picture taking ability in Vancouver, BC! :)

Nice to see pictures of places with which I am familiar!!!

I also saw a test in a digital mag... VERY expensive one, whose name I can't recall... but it was something like $19.95 in Canada and around $13-14 in the States!!! They gave it an 8.9 out of 10, and said the reason they marked it down was because the sensor was "only" a 3 meg beast. They said that was not good enough in todays digital world. : )

Other than that, they had really great things to say about the KM5D!!

Strangely they did NOT make the same comment about the 7D which they gave a mark of something like 9.3 out of 10.... go figure. They rated the Canon 5D (at least I think it was the 5D...) at a 9.4... : )
