I have some old camera gear (fuji p/s and BG-E1 from my 300D) that I want to sell online... never tried and dont think I want to try ebay, but saw BHPhoto makes offers on used gear...

anyone have any experience with their 'sell your used gear service'?

thanks,

You won't get much -- you will get a lot more selling on Ebay. Look at their prices on used gear -- you will get about 1/2 of that.

I have used their services to sell three digital cameras as well as accessories that I had for these cameras.

Send them an E-mail and describe what you are selling and then they will issue a quote by E-mail.

I do not know about Ebay and have heard horror stories about bad checks items not being received and whatever. B&H Photo sends you a check almost immediately after they receive your old equipment. Never had a problem.

If you have original boxes and manuals as well as software for whatever you are selling it is to your benefit.

Keh.com is a reputable dealer and in business for years - selling and buying used equipment as well as new.

I did some business with them, and they always offered me more than B&H. They will give you an online quote also.

Also try Fredmiranda.com. I'm trying to sell some lenses and can't log in there for some reason - but give it a shot.

I had asked for a quote from B&H and KEH at one point:

"like new" in perfect condition, in box with all contents, only used 3 times 85mm lens I got these quotes.

Keh $188
B&H $130

Neither was acceptable - but KEH was well ahead.

You will get the most money from eBay, but you're right, it has a risk factor that some people don't find acceptable.

How about craigslist? No fees, and you get hard cold cash.

I had a great experience selling used items to B&H Photo.

First, I e-mailed them and recieved a quote of $1100.00 for 2 Fuji GA645Zi Medium Format cameras. I compared that quote to any ebay offerings, which were running between $600-$750 each. I decided that it would be simpler and safer to go with a trusted institution such as B&H Photo rather than take a chance with someone trying to scam me.

My wife and I decided to make a day of it and drive two hours from Atlantic City, NJ to B&H in New York City. What a great experience and such an excellent and well run store. Their e-mail quote and their on site inspection and quote yielded the same result $1100.00. I'm reallly glad I went with B&H, even though, I could have gotten a couple more dollars on ebay.

Probably, but it would be interesting to know how many offers to buy the gear he received from the post. ;-)

Well, obviously, if you're the seller you don't have to worry about items not being received. And if you're smart enough to not take checks as payment, e-bay is simple and fairly risk free.

When I upgraded to the 350D, I sold my G3, along with a few extras, on eBay. You can specify what types of payments you will take, and they will calculate the approximate shipping charges for you. The easiest thing to do is to only accept payment through PayPal, in which case the money will be in your account before you even ship the item. There are some fees involved, but you can get a significantly higher price if you sell the item yourself, much like selling as opposed to trading in a used car.

Ebay is easy. Set up a paypal account and you will get paid immediately, no sending money or cashing checks involved. I have sold several items there and using paypal is quick and easy.

Thanks all - interesting feedback (not at all trying to work around the no buy/sell policy - thanks Misha.)

The price that B&H came back with was indeed too low... maybe I'll try ebay or a local ad ... or it will all just end up in the garage like my old PDA's, Monitors, etc.

I've sold many things on Amazon.com. I wouldn't want the hassle (for me) of going with EBay - don't care to set up an auction - would rather list a regular buy price (I know you can do that on EBay).

Beside many other kinds of things, I've sold an Olympus 8080 camera, a 75-300mm IS lens (for more than I bought it) and a Tamron lens, plus a few other camera items no longer used.

The camera and lenses (listed at different times) went within 2 days. No hassle- they deposit into your checking.
Don't have to ost pics if they sell new, etc., etc.
Good luck,
Kevin

Ebay is your best bet. Besides the fact that places like B&H don't specialize in buying equipment. KEH does - sort of. So that helps explain the offers.
