canon lenses - what body ?

hi !

CANON writes the headlines with 5D but there are still amateurs waiting for a suitable cheaper body for their modest canon lens collection . currenty there is 350D but to me its body size looks to be a joke (ok grip costs another 200) . NIKON D50 is younger, cheaper and body perfect in shape and size ... and i have canon lenses :)

there are many gossip-threads here so i definitely dont want to open another one . i would like to ask those who follow the whole development and can almost "guess" what happens next ... will CANON keep producing cheaper bodies small (we should be happy they work with our lenses) or was it just an "try" and they get back with a whatever 400D sized like the 300Ds to bring back size matters "equilibrium" into the 700-900 € league ... i wonder what was the point of the 300> 350D size reducement at all ...

... no one person, not even you, guides market trends. Of course they will keep producing small DSLRs; what a ridiculous question! The small size is one reason that the XT is the best-selling DSLR ever. If you don't like it, get a bigger one.

I don't get what people are complaining about regarding the size. I have the 350D, and I think the size is perfect. The point of making it smaller was obviously to make it take less space.

FWIW, the Olympus OM-1 film SLR I've used in the past is even smaller. That camera is generally considered a good one for its time. Have peoples hands gotten larger over the past 30 years?

you sound to be a radical 350D supporter :) a real XT rebel ? i never discussed any quality of 350D ... it's a great camera but too small :))) i can't get a bigger one because it is being sold in one size across europe ... no 350D S, M, L, XL and XXL ... and i have small hands . if small is the wrong word than it has a got a bad grip ... a camera should sit stable in one hands ...

I like the smaller size over the 20D which I could have bought. You will have to get the battery grip or a 2nd hand 20D as I doubt larger is the way ahead for Canon.

Nope. I just don't care for people helpfully, kindly, inquisitively sneering at the camera's size; it's gotten old. I can't tell you how many Nikon fans have come in here saying the same thing, because it's the only thing they can really find to pick at with regards to the XT.

Not everyone thinks so... not even most people. That's really what I'm saying. And I really answered your question. It's ridiculous to think that Canon will abandon a very popular model, which sells well in large part BECAUSE it's small, on the basis that it's small!

I am an ex-bass player with large hands. I'm 6'1" and weigh 230 pounds. The XT is perfectly stable in my hands. If you have trouble gripping objects, you should see a doctor. Honestly, if you have trouble holding the camera then your technique is at fault.

The truth, of course, is not that you actually have trouble holding the camera; it's just that you prefer a larger camera. Well, okay then! You should be asking "is Canon planning on producing large cheap bodies for people like me", not "is Canon going to abandon its best-selling model for people like me in the minority".

... you refer to the 5D, as if it is not a small camera. It is as small compared to the larger pro models as the 350D is compared to the prosumer 20D. It's a revolutionary, downsized camera just like the XT.
 
Well, are you? "Handicapped" is too general a term, hence the use of the word "cripple"; it is not meant in an offensive way.

If you're not crippled, and you have no neuromuscular disorder, then you (like any primate) are perfectly capable of holding and working the XT. You can hold it in your hand and depress the shutter and work the buttons and the wheel just fine. So can any other member of the human race.

This is not an attitude, it's just reality. Hands are multipurpose gripping tools capable of holding and manipulating very tiny objects with great finesse.

I only mentioned that it's the best-selling DSLR to point out that people who just "can't" hold it are in the minority, not to say that everyone should buy it.

XT is a great body. It's very well built. Yes it is smaller than the previous 300D, but it's an acquired taste :). I like it because it more portable. It has the potential to take great pics. My other camera is the 1DM2, but that's a pain to carry around sometimes. If XT is still not for you, then why not buy a 20D since the rebate is out and the price is right?

It's the grip more than the size of it (XT). The D50 seems to be about the same overall size, but the grip feels a lot more natural and comfortable for my larger than average hands.

I own the 300D, and I love the grip. The smaller D50 grip felt as comfortable as the XT. In short, I think that it's more the grip that probably troubles you, more than the size.

I meant that the D50 grip felt as comfortable as the 300D. The XT grip is less comfortable and natural for my hands.

If I had never held a 300D or D50, I'm sure the XT grip would become an acquied taste and I'd love the thing. I don't think the XT grip would be bothersome during shooting itself, since the right hand doesn't do much other than push buttons. It's more when I'd be carrying the camera around between shots. I don't use the neck strap often, I like to carry the camera free hand between shots. I think this is where the smaller XT grip would be less useful for me.

I'm with you. The 350D is too small in my hands as well. Now, some people will sneer at your observations (b!tching, in their words), but what feels right to you is what feels right to you. I don't understand why Canon decided to scale down the size of the Rebel. Perhaps to make it more "soccer-mom friendly." Who knows? But they did and because of that, I don't own one. The 300D was a perfectly sized camera for me, as is the 20D, which I'll probably buy. Meanwhile, I'm shooting Fujichrome Velvia 100 on my EOS-3 (no size problems there!)
 
I like the size, I have large hands at least that's my glove size. I find with most the lenses I have my left hand is under the lens for support anyway and that does alot of the holding so no matter what size camera I had the lens would be the same surface area, I suppose if your using a very small prime that you would tend to hold the camera with both hands then it might seem crowded? I never thought size was a problem, Size dosen't matter anyway right :-)

Rebel XT Is a outstanding camera..Does the size make you feel that it's not as professional??? I mean come on man!! If the size sucked so bad it would NOT be the best selling DSLR ever..And I highly doubt that Canon is going to change it because a few people are B1TCHING......Sorry but the subject is vvvvvvvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrryyyyyyyyyyyy old...

I love my OM-1. My PRO-1 feels a little clunky compared, but I'm getting used to it. The first time I handled a XT I thought it felt cheap, but wasn't bothered by the size. Now, I'm shopping (obsessing!) heavy on the XT. Change is good.
 
I also do not understand the size probem. It is still bigger than the Nikon F film cameras I have been using since the mid 60's. I never understood why folks love big bricks, for that I use a speedgraphics.

It's got to be those Americans. They drive huge cars, (apparently) like huge cameras, and quite a few of them are huge themselves. The Japanese, on the other hand, like their stuff small. In fact, they don't even bother marketing some of the smallest electronics in America, knowing the Americans like things big. Canon, incidentally, is a Japanese company.

Hmm, I notice you are American. I guess there are exceptions.
