WOW at Olympus Studio

Ok so I was using Adobe's Camera Raw for my RAW conversions for a while now. Seemed like a pretty good plugin.

Downloaded trial version of Olympus Studio 1.3 and immediately noticed better color conversion and can achieve better sharpness than I could trying multiple methods in Photoshop.

My question is, what have other Oly users here used in the way of RAW software that can match Studio's colors and sharpness mods etc?

Is there something ebtter out there on these two counts, or will Oly gain $150 off me for Studio in 30 days?

That's interesting.. which version of ACR? Sure you didn't have noise reduction turned on by accident?

I find CS2 to give me better defined edges with less artifacts and a lot more (really a hell of a lot more) highlight headroom than Studio.

The default colours are slightly off, but with a bit of fiddling you can create an E1 profile thats not far off Studio colour.

Care to share the details of that E-1 profile Dave? Might be useful for some.

yeah i would also like to know what settings other people use with cs2 raw converter, I'm almost about to go back to shooting jpeg since i can't get the raws to look as good. I know that sounds kinda stupid and there are advantages to raw but if you nail the exposure with the highest jpeg quality is there really that much advantage to raw when your shooting in the studio?

then my other question for those that have used studio how is the workflow with it? options, speed, look?

thanks,
Trevor

Studio is also my RAW converter of choice; I also like the workflow options in the software for tagging and sorting images, comparing two shots, etc. I tried a few other programs in the beginning (including ACR) but Studio gave me the best results, in the easiest way. It's kind of slow-ish but it can do batch processing.

An added feature is the automatic distortion-removal. (edit window -> distortion) This works great and could be a reason to purchase the software.

Another thing I have used with my laptop is the remote control, very practical for studio shooting, the display on my Powerbook is quite a lot better than the E1's display...

I use Studio for its distortion correction also - which I mainly use when shooting stitched panoramas - it seems to help quite a bit.

then my other question for those that have used studio how is the
workflow with it? options, speed, look?
Here’s what I do:

1. Shoot RAW with camera settings; Saturation=CS2, Contrast=0, Sharpness=0.

2. Sort ORF images using Studio to determine RAW development exposure settings (e.g. as exposed plus 1/3 stop or whatever.)

3. Batch process RAW develop in Olympus Studio with camera setting (except for any exposure corrections determined in step 2 above) in High Function or Advanced High Function mode. If image was shot with wide angle lens process image for Distortion Cor-rection and Shading Compensation concurrent with RAW development. No sharpening at all, because it will lose image detail at this stage. Save image as a TIFF file. If Image ap-pears to have smudging or loss of detail because of over aggressive smoothing by the software, redevelop using Studio High Speed.

4. Apply any noise reduction needed (which is very seldom since I shoot ISO 100 where possible) with Noiseware software which I find to be best for landscapes:

http://www.imagenomic.com/

5. Load image TIFF files into PhotoCleaner

http://www.photocleaner.com/

and use 1-click function to batch process:

A. Adjust levels
B. Adjust saturation
C. Resize for posting to web by cutting to 900x900 pixels max and 250-300K size

D. Sharpen (always except when sending straight to Qimage for printing where I use Qimage sharpening). This is the one and only time my images are ever sharpened.

Normal settings for PhotoCleaner are to have sliders 1 increment from the left stop except for sharpening which is 3 increments from the left and Levels which is on the left stop.

6. Output from PhotoCleaner is sent to Qimage in the form of a TIFF if image is to be printed. Otherwise, select the storage format of you choice if you are keeping the image for file.

7. Special case processing: Occasionally I will have an image I want to keep but the dy-namic range is just too great to display in the original. I usually RAW develop several copies of the image with 1 stop difference between exposures and then process the group of images with Photomatix to compress the dynamic range:

Out of focus or camera shake images I usually recover with Focus Magic:

http://www.focusmagic.com/

Any other aberrations to ORFs I handle with PS. However, I now use PS so seldom that it’s no longer resident on my computer and I have to reload it for special projects.

8. That pretty well takes care of my images. Post processing, on the average, probably doesn’t take me more than 30 seconds per image, largely because the vast majority of images are processed using batch processing. I'm no fan of sitting in front of a computer agonizing over how to post process individual images unless one is really special. Sorry if no miraculous secrets were re-vealed but most images coming from an E-1 need very little processing so I just keep it as simple as possible.

No probs.

Here's what I use in general when I want to replicate Studio at its default settings.

Sometimes you have to nudge the red hue/sat a little bit for certain images. It really depends on the subject.

Adjust
---------

Temp : As Shot
Tint : +16 (as shot)
Exposure : 0
Shadows : 6
Brightness : 50
Contrast : +20
Saturation : +11

Detail
------
All sliders : 0 (gives best quality - sharpen yourself)

Calibrate
-------

Shadow Tint : 0
Red Hue/Sat : +16/-7
Green Hue/Sat : +32 / -22
Blue Hue Sat : +6 0

Here's a sample. One is Studio, one is CS2.

For comparison, here's what RawShooter thinks it should look like:

Good job with RSE overall, however, I think that image lacks the 3-D feel that I am used to from the E-1 and E-300.

Are you sure about the engine§ Isn't the viewer the same as MAster§

(sory for my interrogation marc §... there is not the correct caracter here)

I found that camera raw brings some odd resoults, but import to CS2 by plugin from Oly (it is free) is almost the same as converting by Studio IMO.

Has anyone compared Raw Shooter Essentials to CS2? I don't have CS2, but have been pleased with RSE and prefer it to the Oly converter that came with my E-1 (1.3) or PSP9.

Cheers, Seth

Totally sure...having used Viewer alongside Studio when I first got my E1 I am in no doubt that Viewer used the same High Function Engine as Studio.

Both Viewer and Studio have recieved a couple of upgrades in the last 2 years but I am still convinced that Studio offers nothing over Viewer in terms of the RAW Conversion Engine quality.

kind regards
