Hi, I just recieved my Image Bank. Trying to install it, I have this problem:

(I have inserted a new Travelstar 3,2 Gb 2,5" harddisk, not yet formatted)

When connected to my pc for the first time, my pc found a new device, asked for the drivers and succesfully installed the drivers. After that, I opened 'My Computer', but there was no new drive to be found! Restarting didn't help. On my Image Bank, the Ready light burns. My cables are connected correctly.
deleting the drivers and reinstalling didn't help either.

Does anyone have any idea???

thanx

patrick

You don't say what OS you are using win98,me,xp,2000.
But..

you must connect it the order it states in the manual.

1) with power OFF connect the cable to the IB with other end not connected to computer
2) turn on IB
3) connect to computer.
4) insert card

I'm using Win98SE. I connect it in the order as stated in the manual.

I have not inserted my SM card, because I think I have to format the disk first (it's a new, unused one)

The problem is that win98se does not show a new drive, even though it has been installed correctly (In configuration/system/devices/USB it does show as a USB2IDE Bulkonly Storage- device)

thnx anyway

I don't know anything about the unit you have .. but for a new hard drive to show up in windows it has the be formatted and partitioned .. is there some special dance you have to do to format a drive in the device you have it hooked to ?

Just a thought, but if you have Tweak UI installed in Control Panel, go to the My Computer tab and make sure that the drive letter you expect Image Bank to be is checked, otherwise it won't show up. Hope this is all it is.

First, you need to low level format your new drive. Please note this is a whole different procedure than a regular format that just erases all your data. In addition to partitioning for FAT and other parameters, this will allow Windows to recognize what kind of drive is installed and how it can dela with the drive. It gives windows informatioon like cylinder sizes, number of head, number of sectors and clusters, and other tecnical data. Most if not all drives bought buy an end user from a store is sold this way. It is because there are all kinds of equipment and operating systems being used with these drives. Not only is the drive self contained in the Image bank device, but it has to be recognized by Windows as a secondary storage device also. Your drive should have come with drivers, but these won't be needed until you install your system files when you do your traditional format x: v/s command. The first format is a low level which defines particular parameters of your drive type including what kind of partitioning scheme you'll want to use. The easiest method is to just low level format the whole drive as a single drive letter unless you have a need to specifiy multiple drive letters within the drive itself.

After you have low level formatted then you install you system files via the customary format command.

When you know plug in your new device Windows will recognize it as a external drive with a letter designation and either install a driver for you if Windows has one or it will ask you to supply the disk with drivers. Those drivers will allow Windows and Sima Bank to talk with each other and work with you camera.

Hope this is not too confusing!!!

Need to format the drive...On my Win98 machine, after the USB drivers install, Win asked me if I wanted to format the drive. Now whenever the IB is plugged in, I have a "removable drive g:."

Kim

Did you install your own drive that you bought separately from another source or did the drive already come installed in the Sima Image Bank. I think Patrick bought his drive separately and it was not included with the Sima device. At least that is what I gleaned from his message. I think the install might be different depending on where the hard drive came from.

Indeed I bought my drive seperately from the IB. I have not partitioned or formatted the drive before I put it in the IB, it came right out of the packingshield.

Do I have to treat the HD beore I put it in the IBV? I haven't read that anywhere before.

If it isn't going to work I wil be trying to have it recognized in win2000.

Thanks for your explination.. but I don't see right now how I'm going to do this low-level formatting: neither in the Explorer nor in Fdsik I can see the new drive!!!

Yes Patrick....with all the hard drives I have installed in my computers over the years and that came directly shipped to me from vendors I had to do what you call an fdisk on the drive to define its parameters. That had to be done before you could do your normal format.

You may want to take a look that your system bios is recognizing the additional drive when you plug it in. You can usually access that bios information with a couple of keystrokes when you boot up your computer. Sometimes there is some instructions for hard drive installations there also depending on your computer.

I'm not familar with the Sima device, but I'm sure it uses basic hard drive routines. Especially, if they come with an option for an end user to install one.

Not to worry....you'll get it going.

These hard drives are fickle little beasts sometimes. I just installed one in my computer about six months ago and had a few problems. Soemtimes it just requires you to clean install everything again. I do not know what came with your Sima and hard drive though.

Hopefully you've got some install diskettes with both or at least one of them?
If it isn't going to work I wil be trying to have it recognized in
win2000.

Have your drive plugged into your computer, reboot, and get to your system bios area. Look for any kind of hard drive parameters or areas for entering values. Also look for an area that scan for new system hardware. Are there any head, cylinder, sector, etc. values taped or printed somewhere on the drive or included in the hard drive packaging? They have to be somewhere!

Hi Snake,

I'll take a look in the BIOS. But, I still wonder, do I really have to look there for this drive? It's connected via USB, and it should be a removable drive.

In the mean time I've installed Win2k, wich does recognize a removable drive, but it says the driver is not right....

to be continued....

Indeed, the bios isn't going to show any information about a drive connected via USB.

In Windows 2000, you will need to right-click on "My Computer", select Manage, and click on the "Disk Management" choice. I believe you will be able to find your drive on the right, and you will need to create partitions on it. Make sure to use FAT or FAT32 partitions, not NTFS.

Gary,
in the Disk Management this drive doesNOT show up!

Checking the status (devices) show the yellow mark-sign (don't know the english word) which means it doesn't work properly. When installing the latest driver (august 2001) the whizzard says the best driver is already installed! I've tried every driver, but they all don't work....

in the system tray a rejectable device is detected, clicking on it shows the USB Mass storage device!!!! Errorcode 10 (cannot start)....

Patrick,

At this point, I'd just call Sima tech support tomorrow and let them walk you through it. They have been very helpful in the past and I have not had to wait on hold in order to talk to them.

I've already send them an email. Hoping they can give me the clue!

I've been waiting a long time for my IB to come here (the Netherlands, Europe) and I don't want to send it back....

By the way, win2k had a driver problem (see the other line in this thread) and didn't recognize the IB as a new drive too...
thanks anyway

Patrick,

Here's what Microsoft say about error code 10:
Code 10

If the device has a "FailReasonString" value in its hardware key, that string is displayed as the error message. The driver or enumerator places this registry string value there. If there is no "FailReasonString" in the hardware key, the following generic error message is displayed:

This device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed. (Code 10)

Try upgrading the device drivers for this device.

Solution button: Update Driver

To resolve this error code, make sure the device is connected to the computer correctly. For example, make sure all cables are plugged in fully and that all adapter cards are properly seated. Follow the suggested solution button and update the device driver. It may be possible to remove the device and redetect it using the Add New Hardware wizard.

That's what they have on the error code.....
Good luck,
Don

Don, tried that several times. No succes.

Last chance: my new HD doesn't work properly? I'll try to find a way to test it (but I have no laptop)
