S2 IS, Why ?

From what I've read, Canon did an excellent job of addressing many of the issues brought up for the S1. I think the S2 will be an incredible camera for this price point/megapixel range. Twice as fast, longer zoom, bigger display, manual control- what's not to like? No question this camera will be mine soon.

Quite simple really: the market for this camera will not pay the extra money the camera would cost for those features.

This camera is not marketed to the high-end prosumer market. That's what the Pro1 (and eventual Pro2) is for.

Unless the Canon site is wrong, the S2 does have a custom white balance setting.

And you can also save custom shooting settings.

I'm with you. Before I bought my last digicam, I was deciding between the FZ3 and the S1. I decided on the FZ3 because of it's lighter weight and the auto focus assist lamp. I recently sold the FZ3 and am in the market for a new digicam. Though I know it's a fine camera, I'm not interested in the FZ5. The fact that the S2 has the abillty to save custom settings and sports an articulating LCD has made it an easy choice for me. And while I like a lightweight camera, at times the FZ3 felt just a little too light.

I never owened a Canon digital camera until I bought the a510. I was so impressed with the features and, yes, even the quality images, of this little $199 camera, that it got me very interested in Canon digital cameras. I have to say I'm becoming very impressed with them.

I believe that I (or anyone here) need not to answer any of the questions.

Are you just just another digital camera lurker that only read and compare online reviews but never buy any camera?

Have you ever owned a digital camera?
What's your digital camera brand/model?

I bought a G2 three years ago (mind you it was $700) and it only has 3x optical zoom, 4MP, 30-sec movie mode, bla..bla..blah

I'm still happy. I've got thousands of pictures (a few good ones shared online) from this old G2. Printed a few 8.5x11s for the home/office decorations. Couldn't be happier. I'm not a professional or trying to be one. Just an average guy that want to capture a few precious moments in life.

I know what I'll buy if my G2 ever breaks (knock on wood).
I'd be happy with anything that's available today (Canon, Pana, etc)
12x zoom with IS, wow! Sure beats my 3x with no IS. :D

1. The only point I agree with, if jpeg is licensed (and so is mjpeg), why not put it in for editing ppl, I want to have more moving moments saved (if i'm on a trip, size does matter :)). So both could be in it.
2. It's more than enough, and for a swivel lcd it's great!

3. size, cost, ect, but if you want more range, get a teleconverter, and there you have it
4. Who the f*ck cares about that :D

I think canon did a great job in s2 (seeing the specs), but the sd line needs image stabilization and mpeg4
and ALL canons need longer exposures than 15secs, a minute long would be nice

The most important thing it's missing is RAW.
I'm curious why you say this? I get top notch prints using jpegs; why would I want to use RAW unless, perhaps, I was a pro...or near-pro? I can do a firmware upgrade for my 5400 so I can take RAW; I've never done so.

I asked a friend to send me a RAW file to find out what all the fuss was about. So I edited it Ho humm.* Didn't really find anything I couldn't do to improve the image that I couldn't do in Photoshop with a jpeg file.
  • I'm NOT a pro, and jpeg meets or exceeds my expectations.

Gail,

This is what I keep saying. This camera is not marketed to the pro or prosumer. Its a point and shoot that the average person will use. This is the type of camera that you grab for the snapshots of family events, taking pictures of friends, pets or whatever. If you are into photography to the point of wanting to PP every shot to get the best out of it, then you are going to buy something more advanced than this fun little camera will be.

My thoughts

NO

Yes, Now I have Canon P&S Digicam. and I plan to buy more better in the future. so I try to find camera which is supperior and maybe also giving critics and suggestion to the manufacturer for better future products.
please look at the archive and find who is suggesting to Canon:
  • to Use SD instead of CF
  • to add more Zoom to the new Powershot series
and look what is the situation now.

Sorry, May I ask you, what is your first Digicam you use ? and when ?
I use http://www.wrotniak.net/photo/mavica/
http://www.epinions.com/elec-review-3864-50C8CAAE-3A550DF5-prod6
around 1997-1998

I know that it is now just like a toy, but at that time it is a good digital camera.

I buy Canon Digicam, and I believe that canon can produce good Digicam.

but I believe that Canon need suggestion and critics from the user to make better camera

That long of an exposure can harm the CCD. Somebody would expose 60 seconds pointing at some light source and damage their sensor, then make a warranty claim on Canon. The manufacturers limit things like that for people who don't know any better and would destroy their own equipment.

one cannot get around it .. some people want it all in one box at no cost .. and the box better be the size of a matchbox .. tech aspects are mostly not their forte .. :-)

Mostly I skip those threads, now I'm probably going to buy an S2 so I wanted to see if something relevant came up here .. nothing did ..

omitting the impossible demands....

I don't understand why all compact cameras with big zoom, have the same (little) 1/2,5" sensor... (technical's reason??)
the 5 Megapixel not is a problem, but the quality yes..

the Canon A95 is an compact camera with 5 (good) Megapixel, but it has a 1/1,8" ccd!

I guess one of the reasons:
For Canon S1 IS the sensor is 1/2.7" with diagonal of 6.721 mm.
Asensor of 1/1.8" have a diagonal of 8.933 mm

The lens of S1 is 5.8~58 mm.For the same effect the lens of the bigger sensor have to be 7.709~77.09 mm (factor 1.329).This lens will be expensive, harder to correct and havier.

ok, I have understood!
Your reasoning is corrected, is sure!

We must strongly hope that also with the 1/2,5" sensor, Canon's guys are succeeded to obtain good image quality, without noise.

It's something you have to try to understand. Switching from JPG to RAW is like getting a new camera, or a better lens. I always shoot raw on my 10D and Pro1.

I'll batch convert all the pics with the in camera settings when I download them. Then I'll pic out the pics that looks especially promising and go back to the raw file and post process.

I don't PP every pic but the extra control you get in RAW is worth the extra work when you catch that one pic that made the whole day's shooting worthwhile.

2. Why the LCD is only 1.8", instead of 2 " ? I think still
possible by moving the view finder little bit and other efficiency.
Personally, I find it odd using the LCD except for in certain situations. It suprises me that people use it much (and really care about the size of it) when the EVF works so much better (I'm assuming the Canon's viewfinder is an EVF).

Cheers,

Wayne

Good for you if you like EVFs, but why do you say they are better than LCDs? A good LCD will give you as much resolution, as much brightness, will allow you to see the image with both eyes, to show it to others, to frame with the camera at ackward angles, and if it swivels, to shoot at any angle at all. You can use it to shoot from ground level, from overhead, from the side, and to make shots impossible to do otherwise. You can't do any of those things with a viewfinder, even a good one.

I find that people disregarding LCDs otfen are those used to work with viewfinders for a long time. Maybe it's habit, maybe it's a reactional feeling ("we did well enough without it") or maybe there's something I'm missing.

A camera with a good swiveling LCD will let you do things even a DSLR won't.
