Hi all,

Is a 1 month old 1D Mark 2 worth $4000? I have a chance to buy a used one from the seller directly, so right off the bat I can save on sales tax and shipping (8% tax plus shipping would run me at least $400). The photographer used it on a month-long project and is now selling it since he doesn't need it anymore (he says he uses other formats/camera bodies).

Any thoughts on what I should inspect / ask about when I look at the camera in person?

Thanks for your advice! I have a 10D and am interested in the 1D series.

people have bought a new one at Dell for 4000 + tax - although it took a while to get them in.

A used camera usually has no warranty.
If so, this one's no worth $4000.

so let's say if i were to buy new... I'd pay about going market price $4500 and chip in X amount for an extended warranty... which in the end will have a higher resale value (given if I sell it within warranty period)?

Check with the seller to see if he has filled out the warranty card. If not then the camera and warranty could be sold to you and you could treat it like it was a gift...I think. I know I have not filled out my warranty card and if I decided to sell mine I would just give the blank warranty card to the buyer and treat it like it was a gift...I don't know if there is a time limit on tranferring a "gift" to someone from the date of original purchase or not. That is something you might want to look into.

Yes, this is a great deal. Get a copy of the original sales receipt so you can use the warranty. If you need to send the camera in for warranty, they will ask you to send in a copy o the warranty card that came in the box and a copy of the sales receipt.

seller says he has the blank warranty card & receipt... so if all checks out, this should be a good deal according to all your comments (btw thanks!).

Is there a way I can check the shutter actuations / number of shots taken total on the 1D MK2 somehow? I know it has a life span much longer than the 10D, but just curious. It's like the rich guy who buys a Ferrari and knows that in a month he'll sell it --so he tears it up on the race track and has all the fun with it right before letting it go --catch my drift?

I really wouldn't worry too much about the shutter...it is robust and I believe replaceable...should really be a non issue on a month old camera.

... for service. I've never needed to show them the warranty card at all!

You might skate if the receipt is generic, but chances are it has someone elses name on it.

When I sent in my 1Ds for warranty repairs, they didn't even ask for a receipt. It was at a time that the camera was on the market for less than a year, so it was clear that the camera was under warranty, no matter what.

Along the same lines, he should be fine until March 2005.

I see this stated over and over but I'm totally confused by it. How in the world would Canon know if you bought the camera new or received it as a gift??? Any seller can just "sell" the camera to "any buyer" and tell that "buyer" that he is to say he received it a "gift". Isn't it that simple?!?! (I must be missing something...)
