Is this good bokeh?

It looks good to me,
I agree.
but it seems the pro's think bokeh is
important and I am trying to learn what is good and what is bad.
I am certainly no pro and what makes up "good" bokeh is highly subjective, even with the pros. As long as the transitions are smooth and blend well with no harsh edges, you will get general consensus it is good. Your image displays that. Of course, what is in the background can have a profound effect on the quality of bokeh. Some are known to place the primary subject based on what is in the background and if it will look good OOF.

Some of the OOF rendering is a little distracting and harsh to me - especially the rose and the highlight, but the subject is really well shot. Clip the rose and shoot again when the light is less intense. The 50's bokeh is what it is, but you've done a lovely job. What I wouldn't give for Nikon to add some rounded aperature blades and add af-s to a 50mm lens.
Is this considered a good or bad bokeh?

I can't clip those roses without the better half being a bit upset. Wedding aniversary present. If you know what I mean. ;-)

My 20 cents:

I think the bokeh is fine.
I would consider post-processing on that photo because there are
structures in the background which my be a little destracting.

I'd blurr the stem on the left hand side of the rose and also reduce the blue and the green in the top right hand quadrant.

Cheers

The bokeh looks good to me. I think that localized, high contrast llight such as specular reflections, LED radiation, etc. are what expose the quality of the bokeh. Your background seems soft, so this isn't a bokeh buster test. I'm starting to notice those light circles that look like bubbles on my outdoor shots from the 50mm 1.8 .

I'm no pro, but this group has really educated me with tons of bokeh examples. Just search for 50mm and bokeh, in this group and the Nikon SLR group.

The day I post a photo for critique and get an answer like that, I am going to hang it up for good. It's as good as saying, "Well, we pro's know that it looks like c r a p, for so many reasons that it's not even worth attempting to explain, but obviously you're such an amateur that it's no use telling you the truth, since you posted what you clearly think is a great photo and want some ego stroking. So hey, if you think that kinda thing looks good, hey, that's all that matters, right?" ;)

P.S. I know that's not what you meant in this case... it's a perfectly good photo... just felt like venting a little about that non-answer! ;)

Love the photo, CWilt... beautiful rose and beautiful bokeh!

I agree with Phil: all that matters is what YOU like. It's very much a matter of personal taste. Since you ask for opinions, though, I'll say that for me, there is too much background detail. I would have tried to isolate the subject a bit more by shooting so that background elements are further away and thus more out of focus. I would also have tried to shoot from an angle that would have produced more color contrast between the subject and the background; to me, the rose immediately behind the subject is distracting. But again: there are no rights and wrongs in this; it's not my image, it's yours!

Hello,

Sorry to all of you but I have here a language problem that my dictionnary did not solve: what does BOKEH mean?

Thanks.

obviously, because you could discern all THAT from my simple, to the point post, see what you can make from this reply to your post:

Hello,

Sorry to all of you but I have here a language problem that my
dictionnary did not solve: what does BOKEH mean?
"Bokeh" (more correctly spelled, boke) is a Japanese term attempting to qualify the characteristics of the out of focus areas behind the primary subject. Is it smooth or harsh. Do the colors blend well or are there distracting elements -- that kind of thing. Do a Google search and you will find many sites discussing bokeh or boke.

Thank you Phil for your non-bokeh answer.
