I just noticed that my GX8 was made in China. My old GX7 was made in Japan.

Better send it back. Or maybe send it to me! :-|

I would take the Chinese one over the Japanese one any day of the week.

Why should the Japanese Corporations be any different than the U.S. Corporations. Move manufacturing to China and save a bunch of Yen. So the quality slips a little, can't be any worse than the Olympus factory across the street, and nobody will notice.

Many of my LUMIXes are made in China - all perfect quality! Since years ...

Relax; I doubt if the OP has even been to Japan or China, much less watched iPhones being assembled in Zhong Zhou (Hon Hai) or seen cameras assembled in northern Japan. In both situations you have people trying to do their best to keep their jobs and improve their lives. Instead, he would probably prefer his camera being made by some illiterate, high school drop-out down the street. Good luck with that...

And you got ZERO price benefit from the change in labour costs, unlike Panasonic.

In February, I bought an E-M5II in Seattle. I have no idea where it was made. Most of us know that it's not the location of the manufacturing of something, but the management. I lived in China for 12 years, will leave Korea in three days after two years here. I don't like Samsung, but it's nothing to do with their (good) quality, but I use my iPhone and computer (made in China) continually, and I, and my dog, will be flying to Seattle on an Airbus A330 made in numerous places.

These "made in..." threads are tiresome and painful. Mostly they just reveal a lack of knowledge.

It looks good and will probably yield fine pics. But, for 2/3s the cost I picked up a new Olympus EM5 body and 60 macro. Like most I'm on a budget, so "NEW" gets outweighed by "SALE". Now coming out China whose economy is in deep (4LTRWRD), you might find this product reaching sale prices sooner then latter. I think I'll let the guys with deep pockets do the initial field testing. It's fun to read about what the hands on guys/experts find, even better to get the good stuff on sale.

…with products of inferior quality?

We get the quality we pay for, wherever it comes from.
There are people who believe that same items made in Japan and made in China are different from one another in-terms of quality and/or consistency. They may be right. But the cost is the thing, even though mfg's obviously enjoy reduced labour costs compared to manufacturing in the West or Japan, Chinese goods can be good or bad, relative to price.

Okay. Okay. Okay. I get the point. My iMac, my Mac Powerbook, my iPad, my iPhone, and my Apple Watch were all make in China. I feel better now. I will take everyone's word that the GX8 is going to be great.

(But I'm still taking advantage of the 3 year warranty ;-) )

My old Leica M8 and my car were made in Germany. :-|

I think everything I owned is made from China.
Most of the failures I had natural causes or old age (obsolescence).

All the Apple Products I own is from China. Also Dell U2414 IPS monitor, K120 Longitech Keyboard, Longitech G602, Altec lansing Expressionist Plus. PS2/PS3/PS4/Xbox360,Xbox. My E-M1 Plus lenses.
The only one from vietnam is 45mm 1.8.
I don't bother checking.

There are many root cause of failure. Assembly Related, Design Related, Supplier/Component Related, Software/Firmware. Handling/Weather etch.

So I don't bother checking where it is made. As long as it is OEM.
