RX100 50i video setting - can I change to 60i?

I just bought a used Sony RX100 on fleabay. It is a Chinese model judging by the writing on the box and bottom of the camera. In the menu for video it gives me three compression rates for 50i but that is it.

The box does say 60i on it and it is marked 60i on the bottom of the camera as well but I am unable to figure out how to change this to 60i in the menu.

My question is, am I able to change this to 60i or am I stuck with 50i? I don't take much video but if I do will I have any problem playing the videos back on my computer or tv?

This has most likely been asked and answered but I can't find it. I would appreciate any help.

Thank you.

yes, just go to menu settings. and find ntsc/pal selector and change it there.

I do not see that option on my RX100. I have the first model. Could you please let me know where that is in the menu.

Thank you

Hi, I checked it on my RX100 (EU-model), there is no PAL/NTSC selecter and I can only change for AVCHD between 50i (2 settings) and 50p. So I'm afraid you stucked with that, if yours work the same way of mine.

I don't have that camera - have the RX100M3 - but have a question. Why would you want 60i instead of 60 (or 50i over 50P)? I've only got one old camcorder that only shoots interlaced and I always felt it was a hassle, having to convert/deinterlace it with something like Handbrake. Am I missing something?

You're not missing anything. If the OP is stuck with 50 fps he should of course choose 50p rather than 50i.

I don't see it as being a big issue. YouTube is full of videos with all sorts of frame rates - 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, 60 fps. I live in a PAL region and notice Olympus and Canon are notorious for only providing us with 30p in their cameras.

The big problem is if you try to edit video together with clips at different frame rates.

One reason though for sticking with 50p in PAL regions and 60p in NTSC is to avoid flicker from fluorescent lights.

Thanks; I haven't used any XXi modes except for that older camcorder, so I'm glad to hear I haven't lost out on anything. I was quite sure I was right as I don't read anything about people using interlaced codecs in these forums, and the books (or online articles, reviews) that I read about my cameras also don't mention it, or recommend it.

I have both PAL and NTSC cameras, and a couple that can switch (if memory holds true) but the light issue has never been an issue for me. My last three cameras were purchased in NTSC regions (Korea and US) and, before that, in Hong Kong and Beijing - PAL regions. I've even shot a lot of video on trips to North Korea which, I think, uses a third format. People that watch my videos on YouTube or wherever don't care about the occasional flickering light. I was in Moscow last week for the WWII anniversary events and didn't even bother to check, but I think that their format might be the same as North Korea's.

Thanks again for your clarification.

I do see the 50P setting on the camera as well. I have never had a PAL region camera so I was not sure what issues, if any, I would run into. So the only concerns or issues with 50P vs. my native 60P here in the US is cross editing the two formats? I guess I can live with that.

Thanks for all the input.
