The closest distance at which the P900 will focus at 2000mm EFL is about 5 metres (16 feet).

I found that a +0.4 dioptre lens can reduce that distance to a range of from 1.6 to 2.4 metres.

The field width (magnification) of the P900 at 2000mm EFL with the Tokina lens varies only slightly across the focus range of about 1.6 to 2.4 metres. At a distance of 2.4 metres the field width at 2000mm EFL is 40mm and at 1.6 metres it is 37mm.

Below are a few example shots taken in the garden at various zoom settings up to 2000mm from a distance of about 2 metres (6 feet) with the +0.4D lens on my P900.

800mm EFL, 2 metres

850mm EFL, 2 metres

2000mm EFL, 2 metres

More details about the lens and more example images are given here .

Thank you very much, Ian!

That's EXACTLY what bothered me compared to SX50: the minimum shooting range starting at around 5m, more or less, but anyway not quality shots at the limits :(

I'll try your suggestion.

Thank you again,

Augustin

P.S. Those samples of yours are beautiful :) !

Thanks, Augustin!

Those look great - can you tell me which make and model you chose?

Thanks

Thanks. The lens is described in more detail in the link. It's the Tokina achromat for the AT-X 840AF.

I have one in my P900 camera bag (though an inexpensive one) but I never remember to get it out. Have to give it a try.

I wish you success with it.

Does the minimum focusing distance vary throughout the focal length range. What, for example, is the MFD at 1,000mm?

Yes, the minimum focusing distance does vary throughout the zoom range. At 1000mm EFL the P900 with the lens will focus as close as about 1.4m, and as far as about 2.5m. At shorter FLs the focus range becomes wider still. At all zoom settings the P900 with the lens can focus at 2m. So, it’s quite flexible and convenient to use in that regard.

Beautiful shots, Ian !

I will have to try my raynox 150 on the p900 baby brother (p610 )

Thanks ANAYV. I wonder if you've tried a TC with your P610? If it would work, you could match or exceed the 2000mm EFL of the P900. :-) I've tried the P900 with the E17ED but it doesn't work at all.

if i understood those were "telemacro" shots, while Raynox DCR-150 (and 250) should be used for real macro shots, at short distance.. am i wrong?
I think most folk use the Raynox at the telephoto end, to maximize the magnification.

I think there manual that comes with it, says something about best results from telephoto end...not wide angle end.
