Tokina 11-16mm f 2.8 pro dx II - need IS?

I am trying to decide a ultra wide angle and like to know what do we lose without IS, at this wide angle.

I do intend to do hand held night shots right after sunset and would NON-IS be a problem then?

  • also, for night shots - what kind/genre?
  • would you really need a constant f/2.8?
  • good to have if throwing BGs OOF for close up shots wide open is intended,
  • but rather of secondary importance for cityscapes at f/8-f/11 :) !!

I do see canon's economical WA lens

Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS

and what other wide angle lens choice, we have with IS

and sorry, didnt answer your question yet, I did want Canon EF mount . I saw Emount Nex 10-18 but the price is way too high for me

Thks for the points and I didn't give more detail and it is here

I intend to mainly shoot streets in Downtowns, some Landscapes. but the streets in Dowtown lot of times have people walking/running so i cant slow down the shutter

just thought f2.8 would help in Night shots to do some hand held, but no-IS would restrict the shutter speed, which wont help me

No, i dont intend to shoot close up.

yes, I do like to do cityscapes at f/8-f/11, but the light is low in evenings, we are not given choice other than wide open aperture, though not preferred
...esp. as it works well only for static targets. Personally I went with the EF-S 10-22, but the 11-16/2.8 is no slouch either - check here.

ok, so it wont work in moving targets ?, even if some one walking in streets?
...sometimes you'd be able to pull it through with IS, despite movement of your subjects, but in general IS will not freeze the motion.

What is worse, with some lenses IS was massing up the criticality when AF'ing - like with the ES 300/4L IS I was always switching stabilization off as a matter of routine while shooting fast action.

Actually (but that was just my personal experience) I know from hands on use of only ONE lens where IS didn't mess with critical focusing for moving targets = the EF 100/2.8L IS macro, but... that is a very, very special lens :D

thks, I want to test UWA before my vacation so ordered a used one and can test this weekend :)

what i see the 10-18 helps for streets, wider streets and shoot close up to the Buildings. I will visit Downtown with this, to test

Why not use your 16mm f/2.8 for when you need short exposure times. Get the 10-18mm for the IS and STM. You'll get some very unique video too, with this lens.
are you remotely scanning my Lenses :)

lol, I do have that 16m f2.8 but for some reason, it doesnt give me sharp images, i have UWA adapter as well. not sure it is my lens no good, as I didnt use for a year.

thats reason I am looking for an alternative in canon side. Emount 10-18mm is way too expensive and my videos are just 5% when kids visit me
