Saw this one and just wonder if there is more

Ron,

Just got the lens at the end of last week because I've got a problem with my Oly 14-150 (one of my most used lenses). Had to try it out so I went down yesterday to see Ironman Frankfurt.

Below are some of the shots I took during my short stay watching the marathon.

The start of the marathon after the 180km bike ride. This guy won and became the European champion. It was also his 30th birthday. Good day for him then :-)

Running the circuit through the start / finishing line. It was a great afternoon. I've got great respect for these people. A new record was set at 9 hrs 55 mins. Just amazing.

As for the lens, it's on par with the Oly 14-150. Colours are cooler and some vignetting is visible. This is a keeper for me because it will be my all-in-one lens for vacations and stuff. For the price, it's an ok lens, especially on Olympus bodies with IBIS.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Ron.

Glad to be of help, anything more you want just ask.

The Tamron is rubberised. I had the Panny 14-140 II but sent it back because of blurry/unsharp images. I didn't have them all the time, I just couldn't control it.

On my E-M1 certainly. I would say it's about as sharp as the Oly 14-150 but I prefer the feel of the Tamron. I think there's a lot of sample variation with the Panny 14-140 II. I've seen some images here that are nice and sharp but I just couldn't trust mine so back it went.

Many thanks for the photos and your observations on the new Tamron 14-150. This is a class of lenses I have much interest in, so thanks for posting.

It's actually 20g lighter than the Tamron, and it has OIS to boot. So it is probably the shutter shock thing rearing its head ...

I wish SS was not a factor, because it is a lot smaller than the 14-140 MK1 ... but I am unwilling to have another SS issue ... I sold my 45-175 for that issue ... although now I wish I'd kept it for video :-)

Has this lens an internal focusing or it's getting twice as long at the long side?

It's not IF but it's a lot shorter than the Oly 14-150 when zooming out.

Can you post a photo at full length ?

It does. Thanks very much :-)

How would you say it compares to the Oly 14-42 II R used within that range?

Sorry but I don't have that lens so I can't really comment on it.

Everything about this lens seemed optional to me for its intended use…a travel-sized, compact, all in one m43 lens that would cover most of my everyday needs from moderately wide angle to telescopic while delivering good optical performance. The excellent Olympus IBIS system and high ISO performance make what I would otherwise consider a fairly slow lens workable for what I actually shoot day to day. Other than this thread, I could find no reviews on the internet answering several of my questions or commenting on image quality of this new lens. Hopefully, my observations will answer some of yours.

With the assurance from B&H that I could return the lens if I wasn’t satisfied, I ordered a black one two days ago. UPS delivered it this morning.

I have several Olympus bodies (EM5, EM1, and EPL5) and several late model Panasonic bodies. I also have the Panasonic 12-35/2.8 and 35-100/2.8 lens together with the new Olympus 12-40/2.8, the Olympus 75/1.8, and a dozen or so other m43 Olympus and Panasonic primes. I shoot stills almost exclusively in raw, jpg, or both depending on the situation. Post processing is done with Aperture. I mention this as background only to validate that I have some point of reference and experience with the m43 system from which to comment and compare. I plan to use this lens only with the Olympus bodies.

After actually handing the lens on the camera and shooting a 100 or so shots handheld, on a tripod, indoor and outdoor I find this lens appears to be everything I hoped it would be. It is compact (almost the same length as the Oly 12-50/3.5-6.3 but only slightly larger in diameter…both use 52mm filters. It’s weight is just right and feels good in the hand.. It has double telescoping lens tubes that extend moderately (as shown in a prior picture) and that are reassuringly stiff… I would expect no zoom creep. The marked focal lengths on the wide zoom control ring index very accurately. Effective apertures a marked focal lengths are as follows: 14:f3.5, 25:f4.4, 35:f4.7, 50:f5.2, 70:f5.6, 100:f5.8, 150:F:5.8. There is a slight rattle when powering up but I consider it insignificant. I found autofocus to be identical with anything I experience with the high end Olympus or Panasonic lens. The lens looks and feels good. It has a 6 year US warranty.

Unedited straight out of the camera jpg shots were examined on a calibrated Apple monitor sized at 50 and 100%. All were shot with the lens wide open at each marked focal length. For my intended use and my standards, everything down to about 1/8 second handheld was very acceptable to excellent. Stopped down a bit, I would expect the optical performance to be even better. A couple of very contrasty shots I intentionally made of limbs and leaves against a bright sky showed traces of chromatic aberration which were corrected with one click (the only thing needing editing). No meaningful vignetting was observed at any setting. Everything was sharp enough, corner to corner for me. I could have probably improved most of the shots with minor editing but that wasn’t the point of my test.

I’m keeping this lens; it’s better than I expected. Together with an Olympus 17/1.8 or 25/1.8 it’s really all I need probably 90% of the time.
