Dear all,

I'm new to photography world and I'm looking to buy a camera which is good built quality and its a keeper and can be used for everything like still images and sport and kids playing and shooting birds, video recording and etc , and I made some research and asked around, but I don't get an honest opinion or direct forward answer some say go with the canon because most of canon lenses will fit any Canon camera while Nikon lenses will fit only for a specific model.

some told me to buy the Nikon D3100 because its best for beginners and has true and vivid coloring , while some said buy the Canon EOS 650D. (I got confused)

so please can anyone help me to decide , what are the top 3 choices you recommend me which has as they say all in one features plus solid quality and what lens should I get which is good for mix shooting .

p.s: I only wanna buy either one of the two brands Nikon or Canon, nothing else.

thanks and regards,

Solution
It is a universal law than Canon and Nikon are batter than each other.

You want everything from the camera body but you forget that it records what the lens gives. What you want can be obtained with several lenses.

As you have no clue of what you want just buy what you like most (Canon and Nikon are very close to matter) with one lens. I would not recommend 18-55 mm since it is very constraining at least for me. For Nikon look at 18-105 mm Vr and for Canon at the new 18-135 mm IS STM.

Video is very hard to make with dSLRs so I would not put so much weight on it.

Presently Canon has an aging sensor that is lagging behind the one used by Nikon. This may change in the future. You are buying a system so better look at the support you...

There is only opinion and no direct answer.

Whichever ones fit your budget. The kit lenses are good to start with, but things like shooting birds are more challenging and may require a very expensive lens.

Try the Canon T3i or Nikon D5100.

Either camera would be fine for your needs.

I would not worry about the Nikon lens issue, unless you already had some older Nikon lenses hanging around or could borrow. Nikon makes many many lens choices that work fine with the entry level Nikons. It really is a non issue, except if you are a canon fanboy.

As for vividness of colors, that is very subjective, and that can also be altered in camera, and in software after shooting (which is how the pros do it). Some people like the Canon defaults, some Nikon, but they are really just starting points. To make the most of your pictures you will learn to adjust them in software, then the argument becomes meaningless.

I would suggest you start with the kit lens for either of these cameras. If you choose the Nikon, I might suggest as an alternative the 18-105, which is the kit lens for the more expensive Nikons is a better choice because it is a wider range. Don't worry about other lenses until you master the camera and figure out what kids of thing you like to shoot and what you need.

Solution
.......either system will provide gear for a great base starting point and for future upgrades they each have advanced bodies with more features for providing stellar results since they both have a large lens inventory for any given situation.

Over the last few years Canon has a slight edge on premium glass and Nikon is currently using better sensors, but the next series of Canon bodies should resolve that.

Read some of DPR's pro reviews of the bodies you're interested in and the kit lens choices.....as the previous poster said, the Nikon 18-105 is a more versatile lens than the base 18-55 and Canon also has the comparable 18-135 as an option.

Being a virtual draw which system has a performance advantage for a beginner, you should handle each to see which is ergonomically a better fit for you, and which has a more comfortable control layout and a more intuitive menu system........

Go to a store like Best Buy, Costco, Target, etc. and try them all out. Bring an SD card and take pics and compare.

That's why I prefer Canon - better image quality !

It's unclear what lens issues you are referring to; it appears that whoever advised you wasn't very clear about this.

The consumer-oriented Nikon cameras do not have internal auto focus motors so they can only auto focus using Nikon and third-party lenses that have AF motors inside the lens. These days most lenses have AF motors; it's mainly "legacy" lenses that lack built-in AF motors. (BTW, the current Nikon consumer DSLRs are the D3200 and D5200; the D3100 and D5100 are previous-generation cameras that are still available, usually for less money because they have been discontinued.)

On the other hand, most Nikon DSLRs can mount just about any Nikon lens made in the last fifty years or so. AF and metering compatibility depends on which Nikon DSLR you use. DXXXX Nikons have limited compatibility while DXXX and DX (the Xs signify the model numbers...) can AF older and newer lenses and you can use the camera meter with manual-focus and AF lenses.

Canon changed its lens mount when it made the move to auto focus so the old manual-focus lenses will not work with Canon DSLRs. I'm not aware of any AF lens incompatibilities but an experienced Canon user will know more than I do about this...

Bottom line: As a photography newbie lens compatibility is a non-issue unless you plan on acquiring lenses that lack a built-in AF motor or manual-focus lenses. If that is the case then you will want to skip the D3200/D5200 and move up to the D7000, D300s, etc.

How the image looks can be adjusted via camera settings; both Nikon and Canon DSLRs can produce neutral and overly-vivid images... and everything in-between. If you shoot RAW you can make extensive changes during post-processing (JPEGs are soemwaht limited in this regard...) so the camera settings are really a moot point.

There are operational differences between Nikon and Canon cameras; camera reviews on this website and elsewhere will help you learn what they are. The Nikon flash system is generally considered to be superior to Canon's.

I suggest that you avail yourself of the camera reviews on DP Review and that when you have narrowed-down your choices you should personally handle the cameras that made your short-list. All things being equal, how a camera feels in your hands and the location of the external controls are the deciding factor when choosing a new camera. If a camera doesn't "feel right" or lacks certain controls that are important to you it won't be satisfactory no matter what features it may have.

Nobody can tell you which camera to buy. You need to make a list of the camera models in your price range and do some legwork on your own.

Heads is Canon, tails is Nikon.

Step 2: Stop listening to whoever told you one model was best. That Nikon is their entry level, the Canon might be the small step up in their lineup; the differences are minimal.

Step 3: Buy the camera and shoot like crazy.

Step one, go through the beginner forum and read all the threads on what camera is best for me.

You will see that Canon, Nikon, Sony and Pentax are all fine cameras for beginners to buy and use.

Sticking to Canon and Nikon is fine as both lines have lots of choice. I use Canon at work, Sony at home and have used Nikon bodies of my brothers. Ergonomically I like the Sony best, but that is really a person by person choice. Go to the store and try out the cameras, you should have no issues trying out low end Nikon and Canon bodies, then try the mid-range bodies. If you still do not know flip a coin.

Also remember the cost of the first body is the first step. If your interest continues you will want to accessorize, with flashes, tripods, more lenses. The $500 body with kit lens can rapidly grow into a multi-thousand dollar investment. However, there is a good resale market for camera gear. If you in find after a year you really hate the Canon and love the Nikon your buddy bought or vice versa you can sell it for a slight loss and buy the other one.

So which camera did I take this pic with (no looking at the metadata)...

Niether Canon or Nikon ... it was a Nokia N9 (8MP) smart phone with some HDR applied in pp. I have it hanging on the wall in my house in a 20 x 16 frame. Everyone loves it despite some lack of sharpness I could have got from a DSLR (which I didn't have with me at the time).

It would be good to keep in perspective that you (as a photographer) are going to make your pictures great, not the camera -- that's only an helper. As others stated here, you can't go wrong with either Canon or Nikon (or Sony too) -- especially if most of your pictures are going to be shared on the web or something less than poster size. I think you'll run into the C vs. N vs. S debates for very specific uses cases, but for just starting out... as others said, pick one and go out and have fun.

As most posts have been repeating, both are great systems. If you are using the camera exclusively, go to your local Best Buy or electronics store when you have a chunk of spare time and really play with them. Get a feel for the body and controls. At this stage of your photography, I would consider going with the camera that feels most comfortable and intuitive. The more comfortable you are with the cam, the more you will enjoy it.

If you are sharing the camera with someone else, go with them to get their input as well. My wife refused to use a digital camera I purchased because it didn't "feel right" to her. We missed a lot of photo ops when she went out with the kids because she refused to bring the camera. My lesson learned :)

Both systems offer exceptional selection when you are ready to upgrade.

All Nikon lenses will fit on the Nikon (some auto functions may not work on some models), the Canon can only use Canon EF or EF-S lenses (older Canon FD lenses must have a adapter).

You will not be concerned with this issue.

The colors are adjustable on both brands.

The Nikon D3x00 models compare with the Canon T3 (1100D). The Nikon D5x00 models compare with the Canon T3i (T2i - T4i, also called 600D-700D).

If you can, go to a store and hold each of the models and get the one you like to hold up to your eye and take picture with because they will all take great pictures.
