NX1000 - PASM dial acting up

Hello,

So I've been using my NX1000 for the last 6 months or so and so far been happy overall. However I noticed that the PASM dial is a little finicky. When I turn on the camera it'll go into SMART mode, even though I have the PASM dial on A. Playing with the dial often results in the camera jumping around modes, like switching to M and then S, even though it's on A. After a few seconds the camera eventually gets it right and goes into mode A. But it's very annoying and the dial is still very sensitive (touch it slightly and it might jump to another completely unrelated mode). I have lost some shots this way.

Now, the camera is still under warranty but that means I need to send it off to have it repaired. I'll be without it for maybe up to 6 to 8 weeks. That totally sucks. So I was wondering if it's really just a matter of cleaning some contacts or some other simple fix. I'm also not sure how to go about it. I was thinking of just spraying some contact cleaner into the cracks around the dial, hoping it would clean out whatever is gumming up the contacts. That might work but might also remove any lubricants if there are any. So I'm not sure that's a good idea. Also, does the PASM dial just pop off or do you need to take the camera apart to get it off?

If anyone has any experience with either this problem or taking the camera apart, please let me know. Thanks.

I can say I have experienced what you have described but to a lesser degree of frequency that has never warranted me to consider sending it back or opening it.

And like yourself, incidentally, I have only experienced this when the mode dial is in the PASM in A position. I cant remember if it jumped to P or S. I have been enjoying my nx200 for over a year now.

Like I said, it has not happened enough times to concern myself diving into it. But it does concern me nonetheless, like it may get progressively worse.

Hoping someone experienced can give you helpfull advice.

Why not get a cheap NX100 to tide you over and send the NX200 for warranty repair. You never know when it will fail completely and you will not be able to sell it with that sort of fault without risk of getting a negative review on eBay or such like, which can be very expensive in the long run.

Having 2 bodies for the system is very handy in avoiding lens swapping and once you open the camera you will lose the warranty and possibly lose the camera completely.

One good thing about Samsung is that you rarely hear about a warranty repair failing. For example the NX100 top wheel problem once fixed seemed to stay fixed.

Thanks for the replies.

Perhaps I'll take a look around to see if there are any great deals on an NX100 or even a nx200.

The other option I considered was upgrading to the nx300 when it comes out. Since I bought mine at Henrys and they have a 50% buy back option for an upgrade, I thought that might be a good idea as well.

Interesting! I wrote just about a week ago about the same problem happening to my Samsung EX2F. Looks like this may be a Samsung problem! :( I may send it in for service in the next two months, as it is still under warranty. As other posters on this thread have noted, it usually happens to me in 'A' mode, and seems to jump by itself to 'S' and back to 'A' or something like that. Quite annoying, and slows dows shooting (missing some shots).

As I have noted previously, the Samsung EX2F is a great little camera, very ood image quality, high quality materials in the construction. But if problems like this crop up, it does sour the overall user experience... Shame.

here are some photos of the nx200 innards. Unfortunately I have not found any of the actual rotating mechanism for the pasm dial on the pcb which would shed more understanding of whats going on.

I do have the latest firmware.

Thanks for the photos. It looks like the camera is well put together, lots of screws. Looking at the PASM dial, I see two threaded holes which suggest to me that it's held down by a pair of machine screws. So it doesn't look like you can just pop it off. It's conceivable that the NX1000 isn't made as well as the nx200, but I'm not gonna take that chance and attempt to pry it off.

I have the latest firmware. I can easily try another reset of the software but it was doing this with the previous firmware as well.

Funny but this issue also started happening to my NX200 after I upgraded the firmware a couple months ago. I thought it was no big deal until I saw this thread.

That switching around is annoying but it doesnt happen all the time. So its hard to demonstrate it if required.

As silly as it may sound, and I have no reasonable or explicit explanation why, but try another sd card with the same lens over a prolonged period of time if you can. I am 'almost' convinced that my nx200 is picky with the selection of sd cards I have. Or maybe those problematic cards are borderline specification. I have like seven or eight Patriot 32GB class 10 micro sd cards (within an sd to micro sd adapter). And after like a year of use I have identified and marked the micro sd cards (two of them) that when used, will almost certainly cause my nx200 to behave in the above mentioned manner at some point during its use (it may take a day, it may take a week for it to happen but it will happen eventually). Other symptoms are camera locking up during continuous high or low shots (pull the battery out), locking up in 3 bracketed EV shots, locking up when in preview and edit mode of photos.

So in my isolated case, I have yet to experience this seemingly defective behaviour ever since I marked and stopped using the two cards in question.

And yes, an sd card thats borderline spec'ed may work ok but after a firmware upgrade to camera may choose to behave erratically because the newer (or older!) firmware may push the card to its limits.

Re: NX1000 - PASM dial acting up

My Samsung NX 1000 Camera has been acting up in the same way Desverger has indicated, this has been happening now for over 1 year.

After reading that other people are experiencing similar problems I thought I should tell you how I fixed the Problem without Sprays or Contact Oil, or Compressed Air., all I have done is to " Switch Power On and " Rotate the PASM dial several times"while applying Downward pressure with both Thumbs on the dial head in both directions rotating several times and afterwards returning to the position I use mostly the "A" Aperture Position and with both thumbs pressing hard downwards on the dial rocking it backward and forward between the "P and S" position., and now it appears to have fixed the problem.

( Everytime in the past when I tried to take a shot my finger would touch ever so slightly on that Dial Knob and the Screen would flash between the PASM and sometimes jump to the wrong setting ) Now Switch the power off, and when powering on again its back to "A".)
