Hi, can I use trap focus with a manual focus lens? I can't seem to get it to work.
Matt.

Trap focus is when you set the af-on button to be your autofocus control, set release priority to be focus, i.e. it will only release the shutter when the image is in focus, then focus on the spot where you want your subject to be, hold down the shutter release and wait for your subject to arrive. I am using a D700 and a 105mm f2.5 ai manual focus lens.
Matt.

No, in MF, only the focus assist will work.
You can not use focus trap - unfortunately.

You can only prefocus on a mark, eye ball the arrival of the subject in the zone and fire away manually.

So is it just a quirk with Nikon that this will not work with a MF lens? I read that it is possible with Canon and Pentax. Can I fool the camera into thinking that it has a different lens attached? Does anyone know if there is a firmware hack that will allow this?
Matt.

It should work,
Make sure you are AF-S.
Release set to Focus

My Advise is always free. So take it at it's face value :-)

It seems that Nikon figures that if you use MF it means you want control, and that when you push the shutter button, you want an exposure - regardless. This works well if you want the focus plane exactly where you want it, not where the camera thinks it should be, or if you want a soft focus for some reason.

It should be possible, via firmware, to make trap focus with MF work as an option; but we shouldn't hold our breath while waiting.

Hi again. I just tried it with all settings on my D700 with my 105mm f2.5 ai and it doesn't work. I really don't see why it shouldn't since the camera "knows" when something is in focus whatever lens is used. This must be a bug.

Have you used film Nikons before?

If I'm not mistaken, a properly chipped lens will cause the camera to obey its focus priority settings, as it will think it has an AF lens attached.

Thanks. I'm with you now, I just didn't know the word. That's what we often did "in the old days" with manual focus lenses and fast moving subjects. I shot quite a few bike races that way - focused on a spot on the road and waited till the first riders af the pack reached that spot.

Who, me? Yes. I am not asking about setting the focus, waiting for the subject to arrive and then blazing away. I am asking about what has become known as trap focus (Google is your friend). I don't see why this should only work with AF lenses.

I agree. I was actually just thinking about trying out trap focus with one of my MF lenses yesterday - now you've saved me the hassle :-)

I'm thinking Nikon might prefer to lock this option as opposed to having hundreds of complaints that the camera don't work with MF lenses?

But I agree, it would be a good option, and it seems technically feasible with a firmware update.

My F-801 had this option in the multicontrol-back. I think Nikon called it freezfocus. That worked with mf-optics as well. With this option, I really dont need to be by the camera. Focus, lock the releas, and do something else.

Nice for self portrait in action :)
