Guys,

I recently purchased a D610 new from B&H. put about 500 clicks on it and the autofocs stopped working. Tried three different lens and had the same problem. No autofocus points show up and nothing happens when I press the shutter. It will hunt once in a while when i press the shutter, but very rarely. I have tried all the reset capabilities with no success. I have reset all settings, nothing. The camera does shoot in manual focus, but the two arrows just blink the whole time and i never see the dot. Does the same in all camera modes.

Called B&H, and their tech did not know what was going on. Called nikon service, sent them images and they said send it in.

First any ideas on what is going on?

Second, do I send one week old camera in to Nikon for warranty service or return to B&H for a new one?

I want to do the right thing here and not screw over the retailer, but i want a working camera ASAP.

Nick

Defective camera. Send it back.

When all else fails, try two button reset...

B&H may not take the item back with 500 clicks. I would check with them as I know they have a limit. If they don't, then off to Nikon it goes.

You have checked the AF/M switch on the body, right?

Yes, when switch is in af mode, no focus points or shutter release unless AE lock. In manual, no focus points either, but at least i can get the thing to shoot.

I just want to know if BH will take it back. I bought it on the 13th. Are they going to tell me to send it in to Nikon

Send it back to B&H pronto for a new one before it's to late.

Stores should have a period that accepts returns. If the camera is not working and yo uare still in the return period, I would absolutely return it and replace for a different one.

Did you ever get a resolution to this issue? I encountered something very similar. I am returning to seller, but would like to know if you determined a fix. Thanks!

I just talked to a friend that bought a d610 and had this problem and sent it back to b&h. They sent him another camera with the same problem! Talk about PO . He is waiting for no 3. Might take the train to NYC and check at b&h firsthand.

FWIW, I just bought my D610 from B&H about two weeks ago now and it's rock solid. I don't have 500 clicks as yet but it's probably getting close.

Something doesn't sound right. The OP never said what lens they were using, etc. Hard to believe, the D610 worked fine out of the box for a short time and then suddenly failed... without owner assistance...

Either way, it's under warranty. I wouldn't blame B&H for being skeptical though.

There is a difference between changing your mind (low clicks limit) and a defective product where there is normally no limit.

If neither the lens or camera are set to manual focus the camera has developed a fault with only 500 actuations.

Unlikely after 500 clicks but it worth checking the lens electric contacts have not become contaminated and are in need of cleaning.

B&H should, after checking it out, send you a new replacement. How B&H sort the repair with Nikon should not be your problem.

The one I was referring to ( both cameras) had zero clicks. He took the second one back to b&h and they offered no help other than return it for another camera. He got a refund and deceided to relook at Canon. Maybe they got a run of ng units...

I was changing a bunch of settings and I got this problem. It took me a while to discover that I had caused it by setting MENU - CONTROLS - f4 - Assign AE-L/AF-L button to AF-ON. I hadn't realized that in doing so it removed the autofocus capability from the release button. Taking it off AF-ON resolved my problem.

I concur. I also freaked out when "all of a sudden" my D610 started working in ONLY release priority in both AF-S and AF-C even through it was configured as focus priority in AF-S. Later I figured that once you assign AF-ON function to any of the configurable buttons, the half-click focus stops working. That is by design; mentioned in D610 manual.

My detailed reply in a Flickr discussion thread: https://www.flickr.com/groups/d600club/discuss/72157631958556973/page3/#comment72157644808844844

But again, the OP mentioned that they tried the 2-button reset. So that should have reset the AF-ON reconfig too.

I had the same problem, mine started last week. I took it to Nikon authorized service center and they found a small piece of fish stuck on the auto focus sensor. Removing it solved all problems.

OMG thankyou so much for your help fhost!!!

Had a really fun weekend on MANUAL focaus and thought I had killed the camera!

Was about to send the camera back to Nikon to get fixed but thought I'd check out some forums...

I had changed the same setting as you. Changed it back to OFF and Who-la... autofocus back on!!!

Thanks ;-) for posting!

I had the same issue with my D600, i.e. it just stopped autofocusing one day, yet it would autofocus with Nikon Camera Control Pro 2. Basically, it turned into a $2000 paperweight, as being quadriplegic I need autofocus to utilize my camera gear outside of a studio setting. Reading your post gave me one last thing to check, and thank goodness it worked! I was just beginning to come to terms with the idea that I was going to have to send my camera in for repair. Thank you very much!
