Zf: Nikon, now please use the Shutter dial for A mode min shutter speed in auto-ISO

With firmware 2.0, Nikon nailed a huge request from Zf users, to allow the ISO dial to override auto-ISO when set to a specific ISO and to allow auto-ISO when set to C. Nice work Nikon!

For their next trick, it would be great to allow the Shutter speed dial to set the minimum shutter speed when in auto-ISO with A (aperture priority) mode. This would be a nice optimization instead of having to go into auto-ISO menus in settings, which is clunky. Please Nikon?

Yours truly may have been the first one to ask for this in the Z forum, then echoed by a number of others. Perhaps Nikon does pay attention to DPR users' requests...

Maybe in f/w 3.0...

While I completely understand this request and I think it’s a feature I would use, my current solution to this is to flick between M and A. I use A when I don’t care what my shutter speed is: landscapes and real estate. M if I need a minimum shutter speed with the option to either use auto iso or increase the shutter speed further.

I keep my shutter speed set at 1/125 or 1/250 depending on how fast or slow my subject is moving. Then flick from A to M if needed.

Good point. Switching between M and A handles many scenarios, but it forgoes a substantial benefit of using A when there is plenty of light and using a wide aperture: when at minimum ISO, A will still increase the shutter speed to obtain correct exposure. M over-exposes in this scenario.

It's not only a good idea for the Zf but for any camera I think. The Shutter Speed wheel is deactivated in A on dual wheel cameras, it would indeed be super useful to be able to assign it to auto-ISO min speed (if auto-ISO is active). So far on any Nikon camera there is no way to use the second wheel in A, S or P mode. You can only configure which wheel does the main parameter change.

For street photography, I have my min shutter speed set to 1/250 or 400 and walk around with PASM set to A. A quick flip to M and my shutter speed is back down to 1/80, for when I don't need to freeze action and can take my time to hold the camera steady. Having to turn the shutter dial on top to change the min shutter speed wouldn't make sense when you have a PASM switch.

This is something I want for years. So far no manufacturer allow it as far as I know. Just small firmware update needed. Enable on/off in menu. No restriction for users who don't want it.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say they probably won't do this. Auto ISO (or just setting the ISO) is one thing, as it generally doesn't necessarily impact your creative captures (aside from perhaps brightening the image or darkening the image after you have set your desired SS and aperture) and for most people they set their SS and aperture first and then set ISO to whatever it needs to be to ensure a sharp shot so the ISO ends up be a little less critical in the creative process.

While I understand you're asking for a minimum shutter speed here to be set by the dial, I just don't think they'll do it to be honest, as it somewhat would undermine the retro function of the camera.

Plus, this would assume your desired minimum shutter speed would fall on a full stop. (so 1/500s, 1/250s, 1/1000s etc). But if you wanted say 1/800s, that might be hard to accomplish using this route, and they likely know many people have difference preferences for their min shutter speed. Some will use full stops, others like something in between because they may not want to go any faster than is needed (for sake of ISO and noise).

It's funny, but I commented on the need to be able to do exactly this a few days ago, on another forum. Not referring to the Zf, but to any Z camera in general. I find myself needing to change this minimum speed with some frequency, and it is very cumbersome to be diving into the camera menu to do so.

I've only been at Nikon for three years, and I found this feature very useful, apart from the way to change this speed by needing to access the Auto-ISO menu.

I'm mostly Sony user. On Sony cameras you can set minSS on custom button and switch it relatively fast. Still not optimal. Best would be to have another option - instead of shutter speed, just set "mininum shutter speed" on dial.

That’s what I do too but it’s easy to accidentally overexpose in M when shooting in daylight, and in A sometimes the shutter speed drops too low resulting in motion blur.
Every camera should have a function like Ricoh does, where shutter speed can be automatically adjusted in M with auto ISO if the ISO range is insufficient for correct exposure. It’s the best mode ever and I don’t understand why only Ricoh cameras have it.

The way to handle someone wanting min shutter speed not at a full stop in auto-ISO and A mode would be the same as the solution to handle someone who wants shutter speed not at a full stop in M mode: set the shutter dial to “1/3 STEP” and use the rear command dial to set shutter.

But I think this would still require you to use a menu wouldn't you to tell the camera what the min shutter speed should be though so it "locks" it in.

With firmware 2.0, Nikon nailed a huge request from Zf users, to allow the ISO dial to override auto-ISO when set to a specific ISO and to allow auto-ISO when set to C. Nice work Nikon!

I am surprised that no one ever mentioned another option for AutoISO on/off that I have been using long before the release of Fw 2.0. In the Controls menu, I set up Fn for Auto ISO.

I press and hold the Fn button and turn Auto ISO on and off by turning the aperture wheel. When ISO is OFF and I want to adjust the ISO, I press and hold the Fn button and, by turning the shutter speed wheel, change ISO values. Pretty easy, isn't it?

This is a feature that actually applies to all Nikon Z cameras and even some or many of the DSLRs (it's not as well known, and I had forgotten about it myself until someone told me about it a few years ago). The issue with this option is that it means you're "wasting" a Fn button especially on the Zf where there is no dedicated ISO button and you are more limited on what buttons you can customize but i did the same thing, and am glad Nikon finally addressed this so I can free up the extra function button (in my case, it's the "record" button). But I still prefer the new change so you can just use the ISO dial and it makes more sense the way they have it now whereas before Auto ISO and using the dial was not exactly straight forward.
