Zf extended shutter speed in live view

Please forgive my ignorance here

I was out this evening doing some long exposure photography with my Nikon Zf and the 24-120 f4S lens

I turned on Extended shutter speeds in setting d6

I set up the camera in M mode and fixed the ISO to 100

I put the camera in live view mode and composed the scene on the LCD screen

As I moved up through the shutter speeds I could see the image getting brighter on the screen until I hit 30 seconds

Setting shutter speeds longer than 30 seconds no longer increased the brightness of the image on the screen

I presume this is normal? or can I do something to change this.

I live in Metro Detroit which has so much light pollution that a 30 second exposure would likely result in an over exposure with a lens set to f2 or faster. As a result I'm just taking a wild guess here. However this mode is provided to allow a brighter viewfinder in very dark conditions and may provide a solution.

My Z6 iii is the same. Manual mode, ISO 100, picking exposures longer than 30 seconds don't change the view brightness any more, keeping the 30 second brightness.

Even the up to 30 second exposure view is simulated by brightening the scene (to avoid excessive moving view lag, I assume). Maybe the longer exposures are more difficult to simulate? Or the Extended exposure times were kind of grafted onto the camera features recently, and haven't been integrated fully?

Yes that's normal, the camera cannot necessarily render what a long exposure (beyond about 30 seconds) would look like necessarily. I found this same thing on my Z7 II but just learned to live with it (and I mean unless I was using something like an ND filter calculator, it was usually trial and error to get a proper exposure in extremely low light where shutter speeds were over 30 seconds). That being said, I also don't really use the LCD/EVF to judge exposure anyway (aside from checking for blown highlights).

If you need to "see" (compose) in very low light I would use Starlight View.

I have starlight view turned off but it’s more about live view updates for extended shutter speeds

problem solved

I use the Lee app for determining the exposure instead of live view in these cases
