I used my Z7ii at a gathering yesterday. I got all my raw files on CFE and JPGs on SD card. I think there were 60+ in each format.

Today I went to an event and took some photos. After the first two photos, the camera stopped recording raw files. I came home and saw that except for the first two, all others were JPG only.

The only thing I changed after those first two shots was, I went from S priority mode to full auto, because I had to give the camera to my wife to take some shots.

After coming home, I switched it to S-priority but that didn't help. The image quality selected is RAW+JPG FINE* and destination is RAW to card A, JPG to card B.

I also noticed that the 'i' menu settings I had were lost. They reverted to whatever they were in full auto mode.

I suspected the card may be bad, but I don't have another card to check. I changed primary card to SD, recording mode to overflow. If the CFE card was bad, I expected this setting would write both files to SD card, but no luck.

After checking all menus and obvious settings, I did a reset. Still JPG only. Even if I select image quality as just RAW, the camera only records JPG.

What else could I check as to why the camera is suddenly JPG only?

Thanks.

Generally this means you are set to a continuous shooting mode that only allows JPG, like C30 or higher.

Yes the camera switched to video mode. I did not notice that.

I pulled out the battery for charging. As soon as I put it back, I will shoot some stills and check.

Thanks.

The Z7 II doesn't have support for the high-speed C30/C60/Cxx modes.

Make sure the camera is not in video mode - that's a common source of raw not being honored for stills.
Great! The camera must have switched to video mode. That's why my 'i' menu settings changed.

It must have happened when I gave the camera to my wife.

Thanks a lot for the quick answer.
Sorry this happened to you at a shoot. It's easy to flip that switch accidentally and the camera doesn't do a great job warning about why it's not storing raws.

Wow, great job figuring this out so quickly. This is an EXPEED 6/Z6, Z7 i and ii feature, and I have almost forgotten about it.

Thank you for the quick response. I never use that video/stills switch. So, I didn't realize what was going on.

Fortunately, I was not the main photographer. I was taking photos of people I knew. This accident is a good learning because at another event when I am the main photographer this would be a disaster for me.

I rely so much on editing raw files. I don't go crazy with my editing but simple things like correcting over/under exposure or WB is so much easier with raw files.

Thanks again.

That's what I love about DPR fora. There is a wealth of expertise. I get into a tricky situation like this about once a year. I see something I have never seen before in my usage. Quick look at the manual does not give an answer. There is always someone who knows the answer here.

I get answers like this on studio lighting, Panasonic and Nikon DSLR fora.
