I got my Z50ii yesterday.

I am in the process of setting it up. Big jump from the Z50.

Suddenly option a8 "Limit AF-area mode selection" is greyed and therefore not accessible.

Tried to review the settings I modified: Did not work.

Did a complete "Reset custom settings": Did not work.

Checked this forum: Could not find a thread on this.

Checked the web: The Z50ii map is still uncharted. Most replies discuss the Z50.

I did play around the "i" button configuration. But nothing extraordinary at all.... Anyway, perhaps one button assignment was started and not completed. So it is in a mid-flight situation. But everything looks normal. Hummmmm

The answer is probably simple but ??? Currently scratching my head.

The Mode dial was set on SCN

Turned it to Auto. a8 was back on its feet.

Conclusions:

1: I spent too much time on this

2: I really cannot see the relationship between SCN and limiting the AF-area mode selection. This is 100% outside my intuition reflexes.

3: I'd better get ready to spend some time developing a minimal understanding of this camera :-)

Post scriptum: Just got Thom's book. He does mention " If the Metering menu option is grayed out, make sure the Mode dial is not set to SCN.". He can now add: "If the a8 Custom settings option is grayed out, make sure the Mode dial is not set to SCN."

Great! You found it.

The Scene modes are sort of like handholding options to "help" folks. But they lock in a several settings and lock out some useful settings/controls. I never use them, and haven't on any body I have had that has them, since I prefer to set things the way I want.

I don't have the Z50II book but his other books on cameras have a section on scene modes that lists settings that become fixed when a scene mode is selected. You probably have already found that section. It is possible that he missed an item or two. Nikon's manual is incomplete with respect to the interaction of scene modes on other settings with just a statement that "Some settings - for example ..." cannot be changed. But the list is not complete.
