not to intentionally leave out Mac users, but hey, .. Would it be possible for Sigma to write and publish a codec solely so we can import and view thumbnails (or even larger windows slideshows) from the embedded Jpegs in current Merrill (and eventually Quattro) X3F raws?

IOW, similar to what Canon does. I presume other manufacturers do this as well?

"X3F Utilities" does the same for Macs, although I must admit I haven't tried it recently (or on a recent Mac OS X version).

I am using this on my latest mac osx, seems to works fine. No problem so far.

I have to admit that I don't understand this question because SPP already does it in the catalog view. In that view are shown thumbnails which can even be adjusted in size. Similarly, FastStone Viewer can show thumbnails (but can not open and display a Merrill).

More to your liking, CEZEOx3fReader has a GUI and can extract either the full-size or the thumbnail JPEG. It can not extract a Merrill raw image. It's very quick, unlike SPP, and would allow you to quickly put full-size JPEGS into a folder and then examine them with your favorite viewer.

Here's one I did with CEZEOx3fReader (downsized to 25% after extraction):

Full size JPEG extracted from DPR's SD1 raw file, downsized to 25% in FastStone Viewer
Full size JPEG extracted from DPR's SD1 raw file, downsized to 25% in FastStone Viewer

Meanwhile, in that insane other thread, I did mention:

http://fastrawviewer.com/

You may have missed it?

I'm on XP Pro, SP3, BTW

I don't know of any specifically, but there are a lot of programs that can search raw files and pull out a JPG of the image the file holds for display.

I do think there is already a windows plugin that does that, but it would be a good idea for Sigma to produce something official... especially since it could honor the rotation flag from the X3F.

There's already a Mac plugin for that, though also not for Sigma.

I think others do as well.

If you're into command line stuff, both Roland's x3f_extract and Dave Coffin's dcraw (-e option) also extra full-size Merrill JPEGs.

OT, but if you're tempted to use the JPEG instead of the raw, be advised that it's well-compressed:

YCbCr 4:2:2 (BASIC quality).

I've been an older version of FastPictureViewer WIC Codec Pack 1.50 free version on Windows 7 and 8.1.

Displays x3f thumbnails just fine.
I've downloaded Fast Raw Review onto my XP Pro SP3 machine. For a millisec it shows a start-up window and dies immediately. The DirectX version does nothing at all.

Per the above link, I downloaded the Codec pack. It did not work in spite of trying their handy hints. All my X3F files remained displayed as icons, not thumbnails. Yes, I had thr view set to 'thumbnail' :-)

In desperation, I downloaded their App and it did show the preview images. However, they are of little use to me because the SD9 and 10 previews are only 567px wide. Later model users would likely get the full-size JPEGS.

For Merrills, Picasa 3 shows something briefly but then puts up a horribly discolored image.

Now off to see if IrfanView can see Merrills . . .

. . . wierd! IrfanView has a thumbnails view (ctrl-T) which shows Merrill thumbnails but not SD9/10!

Oops, it should read 'Fast Raw Viewer'

I wrote this workaround last night and installed it in all of your current and most past versions of SPP while your were sleeping. Import your X3F files into SPP, your jpegs, your humble tiffs. Press the slideshow arrow in the light table window, adjust the time, and admire my coding.

Noh need for thanks. Unless I understood this right.

7/10 . . . You forgot the caption under the arrow in SPP 3.5. Which is why I've never used it until this very day! :-|

Pretty slow on my machine between slides - I hate to think what Merrillistas have to put up with . . .

Sorry, it's not working with my MS Office docs, PDF files, or my CR2s. All of which I can view in thumbnail form from Windows Explorer.

You're asking why I would want ability to look thru folders on my hard drive and want to be able to see a visual representation/thumbnail of the various documents/photos in my various folders? of all types, including X3Fs?

Is this hard to understand why someone would ask if this can be done?

As D-man mentions, you can buy a 3rd party codec pack for $10 that will do what you ask: http://www.fastpictureviewer.com/codecs/

So obviously Sigma could write one as well or even license this one and include it with SPP.

Microsoft's Codec pack doesn't support DNG (regular or linear) or X3F.

So.. just checking, did you try FastPictureViewer, or are you referring to fastrawreview?

FYI, something that will make Kendall happy: Microsoft's Codec pack doesn't support DNG (regular or linear) or X3F.

Why don't you just download and install the freeware Fastone Image Viewer? It does exactly what you want and will let you view any X3F....

Best regards,

Lin

This looks promising.. I'm a bit confused on conflicting report from XPat as to whether it works with the newest Merrill raws. Anyone with firsthand experience/success?
Xpat initially confused it with a different program, http://www.fastrawviewer.com/. When he later tried the codecs, they worked but the SD9/10 preview images are too small to be useful.

There is a 15-day free trial of http://www.fastpictureviewer.com/codecs/ so you can test it yourself.
