X-E5 settings clarification

Hi, I recently took delivery of an X-E5 with 23mm lens kit and have been setting it up. I have been an X-system user since 2012 when it came out, so am very familiar with the system in general, but have not had cameras newer then the X-T3 and X-E3, so was surprised by the far greater complexity of the X-E5 to set up, with its myriad options and settings in the menus.

It has been a bit perplexing trying to work out if there is any conflict or residual settings from switching between the film simulation dial and the 7 custom settings, as in a few test shots I ended up with colour casts that seemed to result from white balance shifts I had set up in some mono film sims or settings I had switched away from. Not sure if this is pilot error in use or set up, or a quirk of the system that needs a firmware fix.

My understanding is that if you use the film sim dial, any of the fixed film sims, or your custom FS1-3 sims override any other settings in the camera, including the C1-7 setting banks, even though the camera still shows the last C1-7 you set if you look in the menu or Q menu. I also believe that if you wish to use the C1-7 banks then you have to set the film sim dial to C first, as the dial will always override the C1-7 settings..

Firstly, am I correct in that reasoning?

Secondly, how far into the menu are the settings preserved in a film sim or C1-7 setting...is it just the IQ part of the menu or does it extend further?

Thirdly, if I set a fixed film sim from the dial, what settings does the camera use for things like what balance, sharpness, etc? I am wondering if this is where I saw the colour casts that were left over from the last custom setting. I just tested this and after setting a C7 mono sim with a significant WB shift, I then switched the film sim dial to Astia and got a dreadful colour cast. If the camera retains the settings from the last C1-7 and just imposes the film sim on it, then that function is basically useless, as you would need to go through the entire menu each time and reset all the parameters to something to suit that sim. I assumed the camera would just reset all the IQ settings to something neutral, but apparently not! In the menu, you don't have any ability to set any of the IQ menu items to each of the fixed film sims.

I am loving the camera and tiny lens so far and am impressed by the very significant boost in resolution from the 40mp sensor, but have had to invest a fair bit of time setting it up and understanding it. I do think that future models might be better served by a much bigger dial that gives say 9 or 12 custom settings, which, once set up you can just access with the dial, rather than switching between dials and menus.

Yes, you're right, you need to have the Film Simulation dial set to C for the Film Sim setting in C1 - C7 to take effect.

About what settings are actually saved in C1 - C7, my experience has been that most settings in the first three sections of the main menu, i.e. IQ, AF/MF and Shooting settings are saved, together with the settings from the Sound setup and Power Management setup under the SET UP (wrench) menu section are saved in C1 - C7.

I check this by making a configuration change and accessing the 'Save the Changes' item under IQ>Edit/Save Custom Setting> (also accessed by a long press of the Q button whilst having the Q menu open)

IF the change is part of the Cx setting there's a red dot against the Cx selecte in the list of custom settings and 'Save the Changes' is available to use, otherwise 'Save the Changes' is greyed out.

FS1 - FS3 are not 'saved' settings in the same sense. They are directly accessed by the switch and auto update if any changes are made.

I'm currently having fun creating custom AF boxes using the AF/MF>Zone Custom Setting menu. I have to remember I need some that work in portrait orientation too.

I don't have an X-E5, but with my X-S10 any changes I make to my C1-C4 settings in the Q menu show the new setting in the Q menu with a red dot denoting a change in that setting. I do have my Custom Settings Update disabled, which may explain the difference in behavior.
If all else fails you can just set the Film Sim dial to "C", which should avoid any dissonance between your soft controls or custom settings and the hard control of the Film Sim dial. Similarly, I set my lenses to the "A" position to avoid dissonance between the aperture setting on the lens and the aperture setting stored in each of my Custom settings and A&M modes.

This thread should help clarify the relationship between FS1..FS3 and C1..C7

Unfortunately, if any IQ changes are made via menus or C1..C7 while set to FS1, 2 or 3, those IQ changes will immediately overwrite the setting saved within the FSn recipe.

I find this to render FS1…FS3 largely useless. I’ve built my recipes into C1..C7 and am not using FS.

Would love to understand an alternate workflow that would make FSn dial useful without risk of easily overwriting recipe settings.

From what I read...I am just leave on C mode and make my C1-C7 settings like all other Fuji cameras. They should have just made C1-C10 make that dial for other commands
