Two days ago my equipment was stolen on our vacation at Miami Beach, u can imaging we are both deeply disapointed in the word we are living in. We work hard for what we have and want, which is what evryone should do in my opinion.

I,m still here in miami while i'm writhing this post, we have travel insurance but it would not cover all the cost, but we have to get it first, also all our foto's are gone, which Makes it even worse :(.

In the future i will get better insurance for sure, we learned it the hard way, dont make the same mistake. Also make alot of backups, evrey day.

The things we lost was a Sony a6000 with the sel 18-200le(girlfriend most fav), sel 10-18 f4(i loved this lens) together with 3 sony batt and peak design wrist solution, all this in a 1 week old Ona Bowery bag. new: 2500,-

If we get our insurance money back, which would not cover the costs at all, we want it all back ofcourse, we love taking foto's.

Thing that bothered me of this set was the wight of the 18-200le, but my girlfriend loved it beacuase it was very versatile, so did i. The time i bought this lens the Zeis 16-70 F4 was not there yet and i always wanted to know what i would have done if it was there in the first place.

Me, myself personaly like the lower ranges, loved the 10-18 and the F4 Aperture, now my girlfriend hates changing lenses so a 16-70 and a 55-210 haves to be so damn good instead of a sel 18-200le to even consider it. For me, i like the "idea" having the 16-70 F4 Zeis.

The Ona Bowey bag was great and we will get it again, it was a very sort time we had it, but i know for sure it was the 1. because of the bag, we are only allowed to have 3 lenses, 1 on body, 2 right besiade it, which brings me to the next problem.

What we had:

- Sony A6000

- Sony sel 18-200le

- Sony sel 10-18 F4

- in the furture Sel 35F1.8/ Sel 24F1.8 (Problem number 2: OSS vs versatile 24mm)

new setup:

Sony A6000

- Sony Zeis 16-70 F4

- Sony 10-18 F4

- Sony 55-210

- Aint enough room for a prime in this bag, we dont want ir to get any bigger or havier.

What would u guys do?, We both need to like the setup, i already have mine 10-18, but the idea of the 16-70 is killing me. I always told myself i did the right thing with in consideration i would get a pime in the future, which i want for low light shots.

Some suggestions for travel:

Travel light so you can always take your camera with you.

Take a single zoom lens (e.g., 16-70, 18-105, 18-200) and one prime (e.g., 35mm, 50mm) for dark places. Minimize lens changes to avoid getting dust/dirt inside the camera. Taking too much may discourage you from carrying all your equipment with you everywhere you go.

Always carry your camera with you. If someone really wants it they will have to rip it out of your hands which is more unlikely.

Keep your guard up and your camera protected and out of sight in crowded situations. Be aware of your surroundings.

Do backups every night to a portable backup drive that you leave in your hotel room. It's very unlikely that both your camera and your backup drive would be stolen together. Your equipment can be replaced. Your captured moments are gone forever.

Insure your equipment (which you have done) to the full amount. Make sure you can replace it on travel without cost to you.

Keep a point-and-shoot in your hotel just in case you can't replace your 'good' camera.

Thx, we will get a backup drive, any suggestions?, no way this will be happening again, and yes, we will get insurance fot the whole amount, never gona make this mistake again.

So u'r saying:

Option 1 will be the best for both of us.

Option 2 without the 55-210 will be the best option for me :) but i do like once in awhile the ultra zoom, when u have it, u gonna use it.

Ofcourse i knew this already, i just needed to get my mind of what was lost, looking at the future, best way to solve my needs.

Do u shoot any primes? Which one do u prefer, Do u really need oss? For statics u can pull it 2stops further, which is alot. I never owned a Zeis, and the 24mm (no oss) does perform great, based on pictures and review.

Don't bother with backup drive, just install the free Sony app that wirelessly transfers pictures when you turn the camera off, automatically to an android phone.

If you have one with a nice big SD card you don't actually have to do anything at all, it just happens. Install flickr app on your phone/tablet and those pictures all go to the cloud too, all automatic, all free, all full resolution...

Yahoo will give you 1tb of free Flickr cloud storage.

If you are unlucky to be lumbered with an apple product, you can do some of this on iPhone, but the app transfer process is not automatic like it is on Android.

Rather than spending money on insurance (homeowner's or auto ins. may cover after deductible, BTW), consider just taking better care of your valuable equpment.

Well, we took alot of care of our equipment, this was really a unfortunate situation, that can happen to everyone, don't have to explain it, it's pointless at this moment.

We know it was our own mistake, but it would be nice if it was ended with a really big shock, we learned the hard way. We still believe everyone should buy there own things, don't steel it, i would not even consider it.

Thx for your advices.

The 18-105 mm is almost or maybe just as good as the zeiss 16-70. Since you like the fixed f4 it may be what you want. The lens is kinda large, but it doesn't change size when you zoom in because it has internal zoom. It weighs the same then the 18-200 but gives better iq. Together with your 10-18 mm it makes a nice setup. Add a fast prime like 35mm or fe 28mm and you are set.
Greetings, Rob.

Here's a good way to take better care of your camera. Get a camera strap with steel strands inside. Like this Pacsafe Carrysafe TM100:

sorry that you've lost your gear.

I've had my car broken into, windows smashed, stuff taken three times.

Just consider that during the time it took for you to write your post, somebody in the world was ran over by a car while they were walking along the side of a road.

I'm sure that today, at least one child drowned in a swimming pool.

But the worse trajedy today was that my first shot at the beach today with my XE-1 was overexposed by 2EV. I forgot to check my EV compensation dial :)

Hi AngelusHD, first let me say that I'm so sorry to hear about this happening. I know how bad I would feel. If you don't mind, could you elaborate a little about how this theft occurred? I ask this because, maybe it could keep one of us from falling victim to a similar fate by knowing how this happened and therefore avoiding the same thing. Thanks for sharing this experience.

Well, first of all, it was our own big mistake.

We had a rental car for 3 days, we drove to the Key west (4 hour drive) and stayed for the night. We had a great time and returned the next day kinda late, because of the sunset shots we badly wanted those from key west. Back at our hotel in Miami beach we loved our bed so much :).

Next morning we drove to Saw Grass Mill, it was an hour drive, at 3PM we where driving back to Miami, ofcourse we still had al our gear at that moment, we needed to return that car at 5PM.

We should have arrived at the hotel like 4PM but because of the traffic it it took us an extra 45 minutes.

Back at the hotel at 4:45PM we packed our stuff fastly and my wife stayed there bringing it back to our room. I drove the car back to the car rental place, i thought my wife had the camera bag, and ofcourse she thought i had it, if we would have been in our home land i would call her, i thought about it...

Bringing back the car and papers everything in my hand I delivered it nice and clean, and walked back to my hotel. They always send the cars right after returing to the cleaning area, by the time i got at the hotel we found out niether of us had the bag, so i ran my ass off back to the place (i still feel my legs 2 days after) ofcourse 20min later they where closed, but i was lucky because the manager was late that day.

This is the weird part, i needed to wait while he would get to the cleaning area (which i did not know at the time where that was) after 15 min he came back with the car and nothing was found he said, ofcourse i could look everywhere where i wanted., even at the cleaning area.

I must say, that i want to believe him, but i dont trust the cleaning guys before him. We are both sure it was in the car, no question about it. Ofcourse i informed the police, i got a real nice case number now :(.

What i want to say is, we where in a hurry, and it that was our biggest mistake we ever made this vacation, never do that, and u or we will be just fine..

Sorry this happened to a foreign traveler. Friends have had backpacks stolen in Paris and a camera removed from checked airline luggage probably in Thailand. It's the same many places, so it pays to keep a close eye on valuable belongings whereever you travel.

I sympathised with you . There are devices in the market that sound an alarm when you are some distance away from your luggage . On unit is attached to your luggage and another unit to your key ring and they are linked by bluetooth Perhaps you can explore . There are similiar units for mobile phone too

And try to hide stuff... I've bought one of the 'ever ready' fake leather retro cases from China. Dark brown one.

Feel much safer when using the camera that way as it doesn't shout 'techno junkie' but instead 'boring old stuff'. Only fits the kit zoom though, but these seem to exist longer models.

Same thing when you forget your smartphone in a returned rental car.

Because of this I always check the entire car before I return the keys. And I never put camera stuff into checked-in luggage. And carry my camera-backpack in front of me in crowds. But you never know, maybe once you will be forced at gunpoint to hand over your stuff....

Thank you, Euell, Terrylau, for the nice comments, which helps a little :/.

Well the setup was in a Ona Bowery bag, it doen't look like a high tech Camera bag. That was 1 of the makn reasons i had that bag in the first place, to avoid the change it would get ripped off.

The way we lost it, it would not have mattered in what kinda bag it was. This can happen to anyone, and the worst part is you will blame yourself for not checking it twice because u rely on your partner, and she did rely on me.

If we only made a picture here and there, or we drove another road, or we did not bring the camera with us because whe did not even made a picture. That day could be stolen from us, it was not even what we expected from it.

These are the things we kept saying to each other, what if, what if. Pointless... We know, what happend, happend, there is no way around it.

So for in the future i think i made up my mind, what kind of setup.

It probably will be a A6000 with the 18-200le and the 10-18 ofcourse for landscape pictures.

The prime will probably be the Sony 35mm F1.8 OSS, it's light and small and haves OSS.

All of this in the Bowery bag, it was our first idea, and i think it still was the best setup for us anyways.

Mayby, just maybe the time we get our ensurance money back the A6100 or the A7000 will be available, that will drop the A6000 in price, which would be great :) Or the upcommingbody Camera would be even better, that it will serve my needs even more...

Well i'm just trying to cheer myself up, we have to wait if we even get our money back.

Thx for all the suggestions, if anyone has more pointers, pls feel free to share.

This is a sad story - sorry for your loss and trouble.

One thing you can do for the future is register your gear - try a place like Lenstag http://lenstag.com

Sorry to hear about your loss. I live in Miami so I will keep an eye out for anyone selling an a6000 hopefully to get your pictures back, but not very hopeful.

We just returned from a 16 day vacation/road trip through Europe with pretty much the same setup as you had. Unlike you, my other half prefers to use our backup camera (Canon SX260HS) point n shoot superzoom which gives me no end of agony in LightRoom.

I carried the 10-18, 35 1.8, 50 1.8 and the Tamron 18-200. The 18-200 is on the camera 90% of the time. The weight does not bother me and it really is my go to lens. It always gets the picture and far superior image wise to the kit (which I don't even carry anymore). It is probably cruel of me to show my vacation pics when you lost yours, but in the album 90% of the images were from the 18-200:

http://www.blurb.com/books/6321835-road-trip-europe-2015

My only complaint about the 18-200 is the size, to that end I bought an RX100M3 for when its too big to carry the a6000/18-200. Turns out that was a mistake as the time I would use it was mostly evening - just when it performs quite poorly compared to the a6000.

PS: I'm not selling the book.

During the trip I backed up to our laptop and an external drive as well as leaving the images on the cards. I figure the pictures are more valuable than any of the gear, I would not want to loose them through theft or other loss. But at least in most of Europe theft is less of a concern.

Like you we had insurance for our trip and actually had to delay our return because of illness, costing us $1000 to change tickets. The insurance company is balking at our documentation from the clinic in Frankfurt - so we may be eating the whole cost.

Again, I am sorry for the loss of your gear and will keep an eye out for it here in Miami.
