Hello,

Hope everyone is doing great!

Would you expect the R7 to experience rolling shutter at 15 FPS in compressed RAW when you have it in electronic front curtain or mechanical shutter?

I understand that the electronic shutter will have rolling shutter at 30FPS and 15FPS in RAW and that using 30FPS would only be done in very special situations due to the buffer limitations and the fact that the sensor is not backlit or stacked.

Im hoping that at 15 FPS in other than electronic that the rolling shutter will be non existent or minimal.

Thoughts?

Thank you very much for your input!

best,

Rick

You should not have rolling shutter with first curtain or full mechanical shutter. You will have rolling shutter (apparently fairly significant) with all-electronic shutter.

No rolling shutter. I think a little rolling shutter look of fast moving subject can be artistic. I plan to use 15 fps ES a lot primarily because 30 FPS doubles my workflow and storage issues. I will even use 3 FPS ES. I learned to like ES on R5 but 20fps is faster than I need. I hope for a firmware upgrade to support in addition to 20 FPS some slower ES drive speeds on the R5. I would really love that.

Thank you Karl! Very helpful!

On a different subject, do you know if the loose hot shoe situation was ever addressed in the R5/R6 and if the design might be different in the R7? When I contacted Canon they said that the design was sufficient to keep the hot shoe secure but I have read in different forums that some people have had issues. I guess the fact that access can only be obtained from the interior of the camera makes it a bit concerning.

Thanks again!

All three modes roll. Electronic just tends to roll much more slowly in non-stacked sensors.

It shouldn't be any worse than other cameras out there in any mode that uses a physical curtain. The flash sync speed for EFCS is 1/320s; that means a fast roll.
