Why show a prototype of the next 'G' camera now?

Since the review of the G1 clearly mentions that it's a pre-production model, I suspect that the actual production model will be more like this one.
Anything other than that, will be a pretty dumb marketing move from Panny.

Indeed, but only those waiting for HD video on a DSLR (like me).

Others could just as well enjoy the benefits of the system now because I don't think it will bring much more to the table except HD video (and be more expensive because ot the lens).

I'd be interested only if there was a fixed lens model ( zoom range like 14-140 or better ) but first I'd want to see real improved noise results and real good 800 or higher iso capabilities, otherwise I'll stick to my fz18.

Given the sensor will be 9x the area 225mm2 vs 25mm2, I'd expect noise to be significantly better; and as long as the lenses are good (leica - without the name?) results should be excellent. Certainly better than my Fz5. :-)

I think the release of the 5D Mark II with it's ability to record 1080p video has got everyone else running back to the drawing board. Panasonic need HD video to compete and they know that hence the very early announcement.

We have a pre-production camera but pre-production doesn't mean "major features missing" it simply means it's part of the first production run. The G1 WILL NOT HAVE VIDEO , I'm not sure how many times we need to say that. What Panasonic have showed is really a statement of intent, that they intend to produce a micro four thirds camera with full HD support.

I agree, it seems mad to announce the G1's replacement before they've even started shipping any.

For me at least, it's reconfirmed that I probably don't need one, especially as it was larger than I was hoping for. I really hope Olympus or someone else will make a more pocketable m43, to really differentiate between my SLR and something pocketable.

Do they think that video is the only useful function now? I hope not - still image functions will only get worse if that's their prediction.

Panasonic talked about this camera to us MUCH earlier this year, months before the Mark II was announced.

Since this is the 1st thing I saw when I clicked on my DPR tab, I went right to the Preview page.

I may be one who skips over the G1 for the G-HD. Mainly, Having HD Video on the SDHD card will be more convenient to get on my laptop from my miniDV movie camera. (no IEEE plugin, only USB2). Plus. I am already a past 4/3rds owner, and I am looking forward to a getting a new DSLR. The E520 just wasn't enough in Tech improvements over the E510 I owned...And, The Pany Gs will fit the bill better at this time. I am watching too,, for any new OLY models for m4/3rds. I'll see if they have anything that they can bring to table.

I remember a few years ago a few threads "Looking Into The Future" about "full-time" Liveview in DSLRS and eliminating the Mirror Box. Well, folks, It has arrived, in two (?) models from Pany. One with HD Video....

Very exited to see this happen so soon after Liveview was introduced by OLY in the E300. Although OLY should have been 1st IMO. But, maybe will show us something very different in their offering?

I think what they are saying with this anouncement is......"We're not done yet" Its a system.....You choose the components ...."You like"

I "LOVE IT"

It would not seem to me to make much marketing sense, I would think
it best to hype the new still yet to be released G1 to the fullest.
The way they are showing the 'Gx' will make some people skip the G1
and wait for the next model.
I wondered the same thing, this could affect the G1 sales, if many would-be buyer decide to wait for the next model. Anyway since the two models are almost identical (according to the info published today on Photographyblog*), cannibalism between them becomes less of an issue for Panasonic.

Perhaps the price difference will give logic to havning 2 models on
the market at the same time

I would add about a $500-$600 more than the G1 with the 2 lens kit, for the G-HD body with HD + 14/140 as the standard lens. After all you have essencially 2 cameras...m4/3 Still. AND m4/3 HD Video.

... won't even know there is an HD version coming. They may also not even notice when it does arrive. I think it's easy to take for granted that not everyone reads this or similar forums. I'm guessing the majority of buyers will choose this when they see it on the shelf and then will stop shopping for cameras for the next 2 years after they purchase the kit.

Cheerio,

This will absolutely affect G1 sales, and because of this updated info, I suspect that Panny will sell the HD model a wee bit sooner than expected. My 2¢

Panasonic is not just trying to sell the G1, they are trying to sell the entire lens system. Video is the hot new feature on DSLRs, and its absence from the G1 is conspicuous. I think they are just letting people know that if they want HD video, they don't have to look elsewhere.
