I had to chuckle at this challenge

Bernard states quite simply that he wants a picture of only one turtle.
Then he supplied a picture of a tortoise as an example

I actually PM'ed him before the challenge started and told him that in English they are not the same species because he posted a sample photo of a tortoise. He is from France and said his translator considered them the same thing. Which just goes to show what some hosts and entrants are up against with the language barrier.

So I gave him the chance to change the description to include tortoise's but he chose to just let it go.

I like his Challenges . . . but this is an English speaking site, he needs to use the English language version of Turtle not the French.

I did enter so vote early and vote often. JK of course as you don't know which one is mine.

But still vote as there are only 50 max which is where I tend to cut off my challenge voting at because of local internet speeds.

I had the same reaction when I saw the photo, and considered posting something myself. However I found that it depends on where you look on the taxonomic hierarchy.

Both turtles (aquatic or semi-aquatic) and tortoises (terrestrial) belong to the order Testudines (Turtles). So a tortoise is really a land-dwelling turtle.

I think the lesson here is just how difficult it can be to write clear rules when you are dealing with all sorts of languages and cultures. Things like this are going to happen and as long as the host handles it in a manner that clears up peoples concerns it's all good and we learn something.

When I was young I had a 3 legged Tortoise named Speedy.

The only thing he can do now is post a comment at the bottom of the challenge. It might help, but I'm not sure voters will look there. Can't hurt though.
