I was talking with several in a group today. We were talking aoout photography and everyone seemed to enjoy discussing which was our very first camera owned. Two had never owned an SLR a few told me their first camera was a Poloroid Swinger. lol

So, please take a moment and, let us all know what was your first camera, an SLR or Digicam?

And, which camera model was it.... if you can remember?

Last, if you've had several cameras.... which was your favorite?

It will be interesting to know.

Thank you,
Mark J.--Mark J.

Forgot to list my own answer. lol

My first camera was a manual SLR... more specifically a Canon AE1.
I graduated to a few extra lenses, a zoom, wide angle and closeup.

I also owned one of those Poloroid "Swinger" cameras... at the time it was very cool, and cheap in price too!

Nowadays, I own a Canon EOS Rebel G and a Sony Cybershot DC

I'm waiting for the next offering from Sony and, am watching closely for the Foveon intros, with great interest!!

I'll join in ;)

As a kid, my aunt bought me one of those Kodak 110 cameras.

I seem to remember someone buying me a Disc camera when I was in Jr. High. Maybe an x-mas gift (????)

When I was about 20/21 I bought an Olympus IS-1 to try to get into photography seriously. Unfortunately, film developing got really expensive really quickly. I still have the camera, but I haven't used it in years.

My first digital was the Sony MVC-FD7. I was instantly in love with digital photography :) -- I think I got it in like 1996.

I upgraded to the 505 a couple of years ago. Loved that camera and used it quite a bit, but just never got into photography seriously.

Then, just in November I got the 707. This wonderful beauty has totally launched me into taking photography seriously. I have never been so into it, and I think this time it's gonna stick ;)

Oh yes, gone are the disc camera and the 8 track tape! :-)

I still have a Mavica... the model prior to FD7. It was cool at the time... now 640 X 480 is not so cool anymore.

And a VERY fine job you have done learning the art so far my friend!!
If you don't mind my saying so.

When I was a kid, I bought a 110 camera and a small supply of four sided flash bulbs, I had a grand time using it, have had a handful of film cameras including 110's, disk cameras, and one SLR. Then went digital and my favorite camera of all time has to be the F707.

Flash bulbs.... now we are talking high tech, huh? lol

I hated those flash bulbs... I think they hated me too. lol

And, where will you go from your F707 ?????

Don't be so down about the video just yet Shay... you may get what you want.... it could happen. :-)
If I go anywhere it will probably be along the Foveon path, for all
of the usual reasons, but also I want that 640x480 25 frame per
second video capability. I eagerly await the specs of the Sigma
camera, but fear I will be let down. Time will tell.

I had a minolta underwater camera :) I don't knwo the model but it was a heavy, chuncky yellow thing... Traveled around USA the first time with it.

Actually didn't perform to badly out of the water either...

Then a Nikon F10 (full manual SLR)

Then Sony F707

I've always been intrigued with those underwater cameras. Were the images actually sharp? Did it have any disadvanatages or problems you can recall?

The one camera I was really intrigued with as a kid were thos once called
"spy cameras". Know what I mean? Looked like little 110 cameras but were 35 mm

At the risk of dating myself the first pictures I ever took were with my dad's Kodak. I don't remember the model but i believe it used "620" film. It was rather large and the lens was mounted on a bellows. Exposure was guess work but he did teach me the "16 sunny" rule. It took very good pictures but was a rather large format.

My very first camera of my own was another kodak... not a brownie but it was brown plastic and rather square in shape. From memory I want to say it used "127"film and was completey preset... took terrible pictures but I had fun playing with it.

I graduated to one more kodak viewfinder 35mm later on in life and enjoyed it very much. It was completly manual and was the first camera I recall having graphic focus indicators ethced on the focus ring... the mountains for landscape and heads for portraits.

Went to a Honeywell... yes Honeywell Pentax later on with several lenses until I dropped it in a tide pool one day. Great camera and it broke my heart to lose it in such a way.

Later to Nikons F2a and FM which I still own and use on occasion. After that a short stint with the Sony S70.. still in the family... and the S85.

Haven't looked back since purchasing the F707 last October... love it!... I do miss using the wide angle 24mm f/2 that I have with the Nikons however.... my favorite.

I liked the FM as well. With it's LED exposure indicator it was a great camera for dim lighting conditions. Although the F2a weighs as much as a cider block, I do prefer it over the FM.

Not only did the Pentax end up in the tide pool... so did the camera bag/lenses and it's owner. ; )

Never had more fun than with the 707 though....

I never liked "Analog" cam's. Bought one, took 24 pictures with close to horrible results. A few years later when I went to Ireland on a biking holiday I bought the Sony MVC-FD7, the first floppy-cam with 10X zoom and was hooked. In 4 dry days in Ireland I took 256 pics! FD7 has a resolution of 640 * (2x 240). You couldn't really call it photo's, but what a joy I had with this cam. After that the FD71 (640 x 480), FD91 (1024 x 768), FD95 (1600 x 1200), S50 (1600 x 1200), P1 (3M), S75 (3M) and now the F707 (5M).

The F707 is my all time favorite. The picture quality is stunning! The cam I was the least happy with wat the S75. Did'nt have the looks of a digicam (I like the oohs and aahs of the audience looking at a digital cam) and I had many focus problems with the cam.

SLR-----
Canon A-1 (1979)
Canon EOS-620
Digicam-----
AGFA 1280
AGFA 1680

It's hard to pick a favorite....
Loved the A-1 for all it's program modes AP, SP, P, manual...
My 620 brought auto-focus lenses which were great most of the time...
First digicam 1280 was great in it's day...

My 1680 brought more resolution and features... still a good image for it's time.

Now, I sure wish Sony would iron a few bugs out of the F707 so I could upgrade!

Hi Bert......

when I first got my Mavica camera, 640 X 480 was ok. I loved the floppy feature and, it had a nice large LCD on it. I still have that camera... (the model just before the FD7 came out) I'm sure it's destined to be a classic antique some day. lol

I was a hair away from buying that F707 when I heard about the Foveon cameras. Since I'm not in any kind of a hurry at present..... I'm waiting to see if Sony follows up with a F707 upgrade or, if the Foveion license finds it's way to someone who produces a camera in the say 800.00 range.

Enjoy the art!!

Wow... you actually remebered the date of your A-1 ! :-)

I owned the AE-1 "Program Camera". I love it but, when the EOS series came out, bye bye AE-1.

Me, I'm waiting for a F707 upgrade.... just like you!

Thank you for participating

How could I forget? My A-1 has the limited edition 50mm lens cap designed for the 1980 Olympics! I bought it in the late summer of 1979 while commercial fishing in Alaska. I liked the A-1 so much, I passed up the AE-1 and others. The A-1 has an excellent feel and build quality, although it didn't see much use after I bought the EOS-620. Unfortunately, my lenses for both were damaged by high humidity while living in Panama for three years. :-( I still consider film, but have enjoyed the digicams so much and they just keep getting better!

Cheers!
