What to Get After X-T2

Hi folks,

I've had my X-T2 (and the whole set: battery grip, 18-55, 10-24, etc.) for a few years, I'm used to it, and pretty much loved it. Unfortunately, due to pandemic, the whole thing is stuck in another country and it'll be a hassle to send it over (taxes, shipping cost, etc.).

Given that I won't be able to access my camera for another year, I'm looking to get a new camera, perhaps in the 1000$ range, so I can continue shooting (mostly portrait and macros now). Features I like on my X-T2: hassle-free, very fast exact controls, zero lag, just works. Also I liked the color/film simulations and not having to deal with postprocessing.

My options are (new or used):
  • X-T30 (seems about the right price range, very similar to X-T2, better sensor, but otherwise not much different, a bit old at ~2 years).
  • X-T2 or X-T3.
  • X-S10 (feature wise looks interesting, but not sure if I'll like it due to the controls being quite different from X-T2).
X-T4 looks nice, but unfortunately out of my price range. Also, I need a lens perhaps something like a 35mm/f2, that would do macros and portrait, to go with it.

Any thoughts?

If you like the T2, why not another T2?

They are actually terrific value on the used market these days.

Otherwise, the usual questions:
  • Do you want to keep the big viewfinder?
  • Do you want weather resistance?
  • Do you want IBIS?
  • What style of screen do you want?
  • etc.

Maybe try an X100v for a year?

Think it is a very attractive camera. Maybe not as the one and only camera, but I mean you have your interchangeable lens body. Just not available for a limited period of time.

Not sure about the fit of the X100v with your use cases (macro and portrait).

Have you thought about selling the replacement after one year? With this option in mind, you may be able to re-think your budget. Or upgrade to the X-T4 and sell the X-T2 in one year from now?

Kind regards,

Martin

If I were you, I’d try to find a good deal on another low mileage X-T2. I bought an X-T3 but sent it back as it didn’t really offer any significant advantages over my X-T2. I hated the stiff and almost unusable rear dial on the X-T3 and its sensor isn’t quite as good at very high ISOs either. The smaller cameras are great too (I have an X -T20), but the larger bodies are definitely preferable with larger lenses. I still prefer the T20 over the 30 for its sensor, d-pad and better Q button placement. Other than the IBIS and grip I don’t like anything about the X-S1, I’m sure it’s a fine camera, but is lacking just about everything I like about Fujis.

I think knowing what I know today, I also would have gone with an X-T2 for my main color camera and an X-T20 for my infrared camera. I did try an X-H1 but hated the ergonomics right away and sold it as soon as I got it.

I am looking forward to what Fuji brings with the X-T5 but as far as I'm concerned by days of spending anything on camera gear is over as I want to get a lot of mileage out of my current kit.

Apparently you don't need better AF and Video features.
I hated the stiff and almost unusable rear dial on the X-T3
I agree, rear dial is damn stiff indeed, I definitely prefer real dial feeling from my X-T20.
and its sensor isn’t quite as good at very high ISOs either.
To be honest, I didn't notice significant difference in noise between X-T3 and X-T20 on 3200 or 6400, but I didn't do any tests...
The smaller cameras are great too (I have an X -T20), but the larger bodies are definitely preferable with larger lenses.
I agree, I love X-T20 + 35/1.4, but for 100-400 and up, bigger body is much more convenient
I still prefer the T20 over the 30 for its sensor, d-pad and better Q button placement.
Some say, that it's posdinle to get used to this button layout...
I don’t like anything about the X-S1, I’m sure it’s a fine camera, but is lacking just about everything I like about Fujis.
Agree again, X-S10 is not bad, but I can't see Fujifilm soul in it.

If i were in OP shoes, I would pick T2 or T3 (I prefer T3 because I benefit from much better AF)

Cheers,

Artur

That's what I'd do in this situation, no question. But my needs are my own, others may need more options.

Nope, the AF is fine and I don't shoot video

I shot the X-T2 and X-T3 side by side and the X-T2 definitely has an edge at very high ISOs or with the electronic shutter (not huge but noticeable) .
The smaller cameras are great too (I have an X -T20), but the larger bodies are definitely preferable with larger lenses.
I agree, I love X-T20 + 35/1.4, but for 100-400 and up, bigger body is much more convenient
I have hand grips on all my Fujis, I use the 50-140 on the X-T20 with no problems, but the X-T2 is definitely preferable.
I still prefer the T20 over the 30 for its sensor, d-pad and better Q button placement.
Some say, that it's possible to get used to this button layout...
I can barely get by with the X100V, but the X-T30 is a bridge too far for me.

Yeah me too, I'm a low light guy so I like the T2, but the T3 does have some nice refinements - too bad they screwed up the rear dial. A little thing, but that was a deal breaker for me.

If I was separated from my X-T2, I would buy another X-T2.

XT-2 is my 1st camera in 20 years and I really like it. My photography skills have improved since getting the camera. I am wondering

1. wait until the X-T2 died and get whatever X is available at that time

2. start a FF system

Not sure about the fit of the X100v with your use cases (macro and portrait).
X100V + tele module makes for a unique portrait camera with continuous AF and leaf shutter for fast efficient flash refresh rates. There was a promo of the slower X100F with a fashion photographer demonstrating this.
Have you thought about selling the replacement after one year? With this option in mind, you may be able to re-think your budget. Or upgrade to the X-T4 and sell the X-T2 in one year from now?

I think I'd buy another X-T2. You know enough about that model. I own both the 2 and 3 and I much prefer the 2.

The X-T3 has marginally faster af but feels a bit clunky somehow...

I would use the price difference to help put towards glass.

You might just keep both X-T2's later, you just never know.

Dave.

  • Do you want weather resistance?

This is a good set of questions that only you can answer. To which I would add: do you want two card slots as a means of back up?

I moved from the XT20 to the XT3, because I wanted the better EFV, dual card slots and WR.

For me a cost-effective small kit would be the XT3, 18-55 (for general work; it is OIS) and a macro lens for your close in work (and may be a f2 'cron for low light work). They could be had in mint condition used. Worth considering.

Do you plan on keeping both cameras, or are you going to sell one after a year?

If you're planing on selling one, then I suggest either buying a new one today (X-T4 is the most future prove one, X-S10 offers the best money to specs ratio) and selling your X-T2 or buying another X-T2 and selling that. Hypothetically speaking, you're going to lose the least amount of money when buying a used old generation camera.

What lenses are concerned: I highly recommend the 50/f2. It's razor sharp, has good enough background blur for portraits and a decent enough close focus distance for faux macro.

if you like your X-T2's rear screen, EVF, and dials get the X-T3. It also has the X-T4's AF and tracking which is noticeably better than the X-T2's AF and tracking.

I personally would love to have a really good excuse to buy (and keep) a second X-T2!

The X100V is only a good option if you really like the 35mm field of view.

Sure. I meant, use the chance to play around with it. Sell after 1 year if he doesn't like it. That was the idea. Of course everyone has different needs and interests.

just tried my rear dial on my X-T3 , zero issues. Actually grabbed my camera blind to my right on my desk, without looking at it & could turn the dials with no effort-for me anyway.
