What memory for D100?

I got a call from my local camera shop. My "number" has come up and a D100 is waiting there for me. I am hoping to pick it up tomorrow. However, I wanted a little guidance on size of memory cards to get--and where is the best place to get them? I have read maybe the Microdrive 1 gig? Or maybe the 512 mb. How much are we talking here?

Anything else I should get for it immediately? I have a couple of Nikkor lenses AF-D type. Eventually I would like to get something that will give me wide angle (28-200 won't on the digital any more). But that is down the road.

Suggestions anyone?

Thanks,
JW

PS Thanks to you all for the firmware update threads. I have all ready checked--it has the 2.0 firmware. And, yes, I am EXCITED! :-)

I bought a 1 Gig Microdrive and haven't yet had to take it out of the camera. I'll probably get a second one for when I go on vacations.

A 1 Gig microdrive is around $275
I got one with a USB reader and ATA adapter for $269 from
http://www.samys.com

I would recommend not getting a microdrive. They have moving
parts which means they are more fragile than compact flash memory.
Also I think the speed is better on the CF cards and they use less
battery since they don't have to spin the disk. THe drawback is
CF memory is probably more expensive for the 1 gig cards...don't
know this for a fact since they weren't around when I got mine.

There are several online reviews as to which CF memory is the fastest
if that is important to you. I pretty sure there is a relatively recent
one on this site.

Eric

I would spend the $50 and get an extra battery EN-EL3 if they have one.
I would also think about picking up an AC adapter.

I got 512mb "Transcender" CF cards from Microwarehouse.com. They are $166 each and since a 1GB card is $329, this is a better deal considering the cards are 25x speed and have a LIFETIME warranty. The web page for the site has $199 as the price but order more than one and get a deal. I get 151 large/fine images on one card or 51 NEF pics, so four cards and I am fine.

IMHO the microdrive is the best way to go. You get 107 RAW shots and something like 260 JPEG fine shots. More than enough for most things. I keep it in the camera all the time and do the transfer via USB. The fragile issue is not a factor if you keep it in the camera most of the time :-). I got my microdrive for $230...

Consider getting the MB-D100 grip. The biggest advantage is that it gives the camera a better feel. Without the grip, the right pinky finger slips off the bottom of the camera. Nothing like a dangling pinky to put you in a bad mood... :-)

The MB-D100 also gives you more battery options. I originally considered the voice annotation feature a gimick, but I've since found it surprisingly useful.

Nice price! Might have to buy

The only problem is if you drop it outside the camera. They're such little things you forget they're actually delicate mechanical contraptions.

My experience with the D100 is using 2 Ridata 512 mb cards. At the highest jpg setting, D100 shows 151 potential shots (in actual use, about 180). Cards have been 100% reliable and fast. Ordered from http://www.mypcmax.com about $185 each.

Good luck.

Viking 512 Mb cards being sold for $204 with a $50 mail-in rebate at:

Just ordered my second one today. Viking and Kingston cards work well with Nikons.

CF card is faster because IBM MD takes a little time to spin up. But it's cheaper picture per MB.

CF card has faster writing speed on D100. IBM MD is slower on D100 but faster on a static powered card reader.

CF card is more expensive but it won't break easily if you drop it whereas IBM MD will break if you drop it too hard coz it has moving parts.

Get a IBM MD if you don't take out the card all the time meaning that you don't take more than 108 RAW pictures before you can transfer all files to the computer.

Get a CF card if you take out the card often and when you need speed.

IBM MD uses more power whereas CF saves more energy.

Get CF for cold weather and IBM MD for spring - end of Fall. No Winter Please.

I suggest get the IBM for now since it's cheap and get another 512 MB CF card too if you have the cash.

If you have lower budget, then go for IBM MD.

Hope this help.

I have a 1 GB MicroDrive - never had any problem with it.

For use on vacations ect. you may consider a "Digital Wallet". They started at 3 GB but has now 10-30 GB, so there is a fair chance you can find an older left over one at a really bargain price. I bought a 3 GB for just around 80 $.

I have 3 Ridata 512 MB cards, bought at
http://www.powerinnumbers.com.au

(one of the few online stores that ship those cards to Europe, price was somewhere around EUR 192 per card).

For travelling, this still is not enough (I mainly shoot compressed NEF, you can get about 110 pictures on such a 512 MB card)

I bought mine local incase anything went wrong... Ideally though, like Dave said if you keep it in the camera you're not likely to drop it and thus damage it. However, to correct Dave you get close to 360 Large Fine Jpegs and if you were to use compressed NEF's in a pinch you'd get close to 200 of those.
Consider getting the MB-D100 grip. The biggest advantage is that
