Question for those interested in a 7-series camera from Sony.

What will you do if Sony releases an A7X SLT camera and not an A7XX?

Well, I'll keep shooting with my current cameras till I think they're not enough for me and/or they die. Then I'll see what the options are and decide what to do.

But I'd think a lot before spending money on new lenses and such.

Hmmm I don't know, go shoot some pictures?
Ok. Since you responded you must be interested in a 7-series camera from Sony. With what would you be shooting these pictures? The A7X?

I will pretty much do the same thing. It would be a big PITA to have to switch systems so I hope I like whatever Sony releases.

I have a hard time believing that will be the case, since Sony has not yet demonstrated theat they can make a high end A7X (with all that means). I expect they will release both. And if the A7X is a resounding success with either fixable or ignorable complaints, then the A7XX will probably be the last of its kind from Sony.

If on the other hand, they do only release an A7X, I will wait and see. I would probably buy a used A700 (or even a used A850) as a backup to my current one. I will try it out in a camera store to see if the EVF is acceptable, but I still have concerns about the life (including cleanliness) of the Pellicle. I would definitely want to read user experiences before I considered buying one. I hope that the pellicle is a short term solution to the video AF problem and that on-sensor PDAF tech will advance fast enough to replace it, before I need to replace my current cameras.

Worse case, I will continue not buying high end accessories (STF and 70-400 lens) and would start to seriously consider buying in slowly into either C or N.

Would not bother me since I wold prefer the 7x anyway !

Either that or I'll keep shooting with my a55, Canon 7D and Canon 1D4.

I know what you're asking and I'm perfectly willing to accept an SLT camera, either with an OVF or a very good EVF. For me to buy one, though, it has to match the focus tracking, high ISO capability and burst rate of my Canon 7D. I really don't care if it's an SLR or SLT.

If Sony announces either one before my a55 ships I'd be happy to cancel my order and upgrade!

if so I will switch to Sony altogether.

but even if there is no A77V , I will still switch over to Sony with the A55V.

it is an ideal cam for most IMNSHO.

not enough , funny, you are joking , right?

the A55V is already much better a cam than the A700 or anything else with an APS-C CMOS.
But I'd think a lot before spending money on new lenses and such.

when do you expect to get your A55V ?
mine is coming on 10th.

I feel that the delay in release of the A560 in the US probably has a few reasons -- overloaded production facilities, don't want to compete with the A55, and maybe want to see if people would buy an A55 if there was no other 5 series available.

I could see them doing the same thing with the A77/A7xx. Announce them both and even have them both previewed on photo review websites. But announce the A77 for March and the A7xx likely for Oct or Dec. Most people going into Sony Style stores or Ritz Camera (the only two stores in my area that carry Sony high end equipment) won't know about the announcement of the A7xx but will see the A77.

So if Sony announced them both with delivery schedules that I listed (and note the bolded "likely") what would you do? (and I realize that some folks can and will buy both, but that's ok)

There's a lot to being "enough" which has to do with subjective as well as objective criteria. And I don't see how anyone can say they are as good as or better than any other camera until they have actually been used. Right off I'd say they have better LV and video than the A700, but worse OVF and AF/MF controls. Those may or may not be important to you (subjective), but those and other things are to other people.

Before digital cameras, all SLRs had the same IQ. But there were many brands and models that appealed to different needs. Not everybody bought EOS1V's or F5's. But consumer cameras had just as good IQ. Today, for most applications all DSLRs have essentially the same IQ (I don't worry about ultra high ISO or video) except for an occasional screw up of a new camera. So I pick my camera based on user interface and features I use. The A55 specs are not good enough for me. I don't know about the A77.

Even if they did release both, I'd still get the A7x. I'm done with the classic design, and I'm going to stick with the SLTs from now on. They are pretty much what I've been dreaming about for several years.

The only thing holding me back with the new SLTs (a33 + a55) is the interface. I'm currently using the KM7D, and I love the external controls since I often tweak settings.

But everything else is dandy with the SLTs. And to be honest, I could probably live with the interface of the current two models, and if the a77 came out as a 700g body, I'd go for the a55 instead. I'm really annoyed with the weight and bulk of the 7D for my use.

A 7xx of course. I prefer to be close to my A700 than a different size. I don't like until now the electronic viewfinders. I want all the buttons from A 700, quick dial menu and good ergonomy.

I am concerned about the Pellicle. (I'm not keen on using an EVF, but I could be converted depending on quality). I keep my cameras for a long time. I have a 50 year old medium format SLR with deteriorated coatings on its mirror. Same with my 30 year old SRT101. Some of my other SLRS have some smutz on the mirror which is noticeable in the VF. I've never tried cleaning them because of the sensitivity of the mirror and because it moves out of the way during exposure and has no effect on IQ. I'll wait and see how people deal with things like that before I jump in.

I think that this is a likely scenario.

If the A77 has ALL of the buttons, a metal body, superior IQ performance and a sensible price, then I will give it serious consideration as a replacement for my A700.
