What are the Chances of an OM5ii with Bird Detect?

The OM1i is getting old, supplanted with the Mark II, and OM just released the OM3, a great camera but a little strange to pair with something like the 75-300 etc.

I use my OM5 for birds, yes, paired with the lowly 75-300. Why? Weight and bulk are my main considerations. I carry this setup on random multi-mile hikes locally multiple times a week. Yesterday a pair of eagles flew between me and the moon at the end of my long hike. Had I been carrying an OM1 with a heavier lens like the 300/4 I doubt I would have had the energy to serendipitously walk to the end of the peninsula where I saw the birds.

For me compact and low weight is important; I get more shots with the camera I have, not the heavy camera that is superior.

My question: How likely is it that OM will release an OM5 in a similar form factor to the current one with AI Bird Detection?

I believe my biggest bottleneck/cause for missed shots is clumsy focussing. AI Bird Detect/autofocus would solve this for me.

Could this feature come to the OM5 soon???

I would love it if the 75-300 focussed a bit faster as well, but that's another issue.

IMO the E-M5 series will/needs to be brought into the new sensor and processor generation and when that happens, subject detection and the various other unique capabilities come along with the package.

2026 seems likely. By that point OM-3 will be "old news" and of course, OM-1 series even older.

They'll likely ditch the plastic shell too, win-win.

Yours, in speculation,

Rick

I may be wrong, but I think that every camera that Olympus/OM has released with bird detect has used a battery that is larger than the one in the OM-5 (I 0wn the OM5). I am assuming that the larger (more powerful?) battery is required for the subject detect processing. The larger battery is one reason my OM-3 is heavier than my OM-5, and a bit larger. With all this in mind, I suspect any future OM-5 with bird detect will need a larger battery and so will have a weight similar to the OM-3.... which might be your better solution right now.

Of course I could be all wrong......... happened once, IIRC.

I'd imagine third-party accessory grips for the OM-3 will be out within the next few months, so maybe that is the answer?

Also, Sony RX10 IV. I don't think it has "Bird Detect", but folks rave about the AF and I've seen BIF photos made with it.

IMO I think the OM-3 is the new OM-5, well maybe not but if you want those advanced features just go with the new OM-3, the OM-5 still has a place in the line up and still is a great camera and I don't think it needs Bird Detection but then again why not if they can fit it in, I like it the way it is though and won't be in the market for a new OM-5, keep it as a budget alternative the way it is I say

Sooner or later there will have to be some definitive direction for the future of the EP, E-M10, and OM-5 series. I suspect not all will make the cut.

I agree with everything Gary says here.

The whole product portfolio from OM System when it comes to camera bodies just lacks depth and direction.

I highly doubt that the size of the camera body will dictate software/firmware capabilities in the cameras meaning there is no reason why a OM-5 sized camera would not be capable of doing subject detection.

So with that in mind I hope OM System will show us some sort of high level roadmap for the camera bodies as well. Of course not spilling the beans on each an every capability of the cameras, but just what kind of cameras we can expect 1,2,3 years from now.

Otherwise these forum and half of YouTube is bloated with stupid guesswork and people making very bad assumptions.

Judging by the difference between my A7Riv and A7CR, subject detection really uses up battery life. That would mean having a bigger and heavier OM5 to take the OM1/OM3 battery, plus the battery weight. The only differences between the Riv and CR that might use more battery are subject detection and better IBIS.

OMDS may not need or want to sell anymore of the non-stacked sensors, apart from future Pen EP bodies.

Maybe the future line up will be Pen EP, OM3, OM1 unless and until new sensor technology reaches MFT or the market changes its requirements.

I'm glad I have an OM5 - we may not see as small and highly functional MFT body again for some time.

Exactly, and I suspect that is one of the reasons we have the OM-3 instead of an OM-5 II.

I think having a camera roadmap might hurt sales of existing products like the OM-1 and OM-5.
