Shot about 170, video clips on a job the other day.

The S5 IIX recorded the video files to two different folders on the same SD Card.

Unfortunately, the files had duplicate NAMES, although they were different video files.

How do I avoid this in the future???

More Detailed Info:

Firstly, the files were recorded on the same day, same camera, same SD card in Slot 1.

It put the video files in to two different folders on the same SD 1 card named 113_PANA and 114_PANA

There were 83 Video Files in folder 113_PANA, and 99 video files in 114_PANA.

Unfortunately, the video files had duplicate names, although they were different video files.

You might not be able to see it clearly, but the files on the left (recorded in to folder 113_PANA) have the same names as the files on the right (recorded in to folder 114_PANA), despite being different files.

Even more weird, the S5 IIX started recording the first files I shot in to folder 114_PANA, then about halfway though the day, switched to recording to folder 113_PANA (while reusing the same file names), and then switched back to recording to folder 114_PANA for last video files of the day.

If anyone has suggestions on how to prevent something like this from happening, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe proxies? Perhaps compare the file sizes to confirm.

I've seen some strange folder conventions on my own S5iiX's, but it hasn't caused any problems other than finding files. I told the camera to save proxies to the other card is one thing I did.

The weirdness at times hasn't justified a total reset or formatting the cards in camera or anything yet, but that is what I will do if it get too weird.

Thanks for the reply.

They aren't proxies though. They are all the 4K files.

Just the S5 IIX decided to recylce the names of the files, which means when I tireid to copy them from the two folders on the SD card in to a single folder on the computer, I got all sorts of errors like, "Some files already exist in the location you are copying too," or something like that.

I actually ATTEMPTED to record proxies on the SD card in slot 2. Unfortunately, it only created proxies for the 99 video files that are in the 114_PANA folder, and didn't record any proxy files for the other 83 video clips in the 113_PANA folder.

I think the reason that the camera glitched out is because the previous day, I was shooting stills, and I had the card slot record function to record duplicates (so, same photo to both cards), which it did.

Then the following day I started recordeing video, and the FIRST video of the day I still had the card slot function set to record duplicates. AFter recording the first video of the day, I switched it over to recording the main video files on Card 1, and the proxies (1080p Hihg) to Card Slot 2.

Well, looks like they have some "refinement" to do on the file system software. Sorry I couldn't offer any real help.

No worries at all!!! Always happy to hear from you.

I'll try to pass it along to Sean Robinson but I know he is a pretty busy lad.

Cameras have various algorithms for deciding what the next filename should be. Those algorithms can produce duplicate filenames on the same card when they get confused about whether the card has been changed, since many rely on the most recent filename to know what the next sequential filename should be, in combination with similar information stored in non-volatile RAM (NVRAM).

One common way they get confused is if the camera is not shutdown orderly, especially if there's a card swap performed over the same period. This can cause the NVRAM data to mismatch the card data, where the camera mistakenly uses the NVRAM filename in preference over the most recent filename stored on the card.

With that background established, did you do any card pulls while shooting? Did the camera ever shutdown disorderly? (for example, swapping battery without powering down).

Thanks so much for the reply, Horschack, and thanks for making it easy enough for even a photographer to understand :)

I think there is a good chance that I may have swapped batteries while the camera was still on. I have the LCD timeout set pretty quickly, so a lot of times I think the camera is turned off when it actually isn't.

I probably saw the black LCD and just assumed it was turned off (maybe the blacked-out dials on the S5 IIX makes it even that much harder to notice instantly if the camera is on or off I guess, as the text is more muted than on my S1 or S5 original).

On another note, the slow start-up time of the S5 IIX has thrown me off a few times. I sometimes think the battery is dead, pull it out and put it in a charger, only to realize that it is fully charged.
