Hello friends,

I'm looking for recommendations to upgrade my Canon EOS 700D.

It was my first ever DSLR that I got in 2012 and served it's purpose well for over 10 years now. It's recently affected by fungus and the repair cost isn't worth it. I am planning to exchange the camera body along with the kit lens, the EF75-300mm and 50mm potrait lens.

I'm open to any brands, full frame or mirrorless - all options are welcome. Please remember though I will be keeping this one for the next 10 years or more. I'll be buying only 3 lenses - one prime for potrait and macro, one wide angle for landscape and one telephoto lens for birds and anything that needs zoom.

Things I'm looking for:

1. I'm getting into Wildlife photography. Need more continuous shutter count

2. Less noise at reasonably higher ISO for milky way photographs

3. Decent HDR capabilities

4. I could use more than the 700D's 18MP

5. I loved the live view of 700D and would need this feature in my new camera as well

Video recording is not my priority. Less weight is a plus as it's easy to travel along with.

I've not made up my mind about the budget so please suggest at both hobbyist and professional levels.

Thank youu!

Lightweight: Sony RX10 IV

Hobbyist: Canon R7 + RF 18-150 mm + RF 100-400

More advanced hobbyist / entry level pro: Canon R6 II + RF 24-105 F/4 L + RF 100-500 L

Pro: Canon R5 + RF 24-70 f/2.8 + RF 100-500 L
Thank you! I am new to all these models so taking a bit of time Googling and understanding what they have to offer.

Are these full-frame? I am still Googling the information, sorry if I am asking the obvious. I would like to move away from the crop censor with this upgrade.

I looked at Nikon Z Fc and it looks so cool. Seems lightweight too. I wonder if Canon has any equivalents of it (in terms of features not that Vintage look).

After an hour of looking around, I guess I am gonna settle with 1.5 to 2K USD budget for the mirrorless full-frame body alone. Let us see what other options I get here.

Once, again thank you!

The Sony RX10iv is a fixed lens bridge camera with a long zoom range but a small sensor. It isn't what what you asked for, but it is worth looking at if you want an "all-in-one" camera.

The Canon R7 is an APS-C mirrorless camera with very good AF and very high shooting rates. If you want something cheaper, look at the R10.

The R6 MkII is a very competent Canon FF mirrorless camera. The R5 is a professional level camera.

The Nikon Zfc is an entry level Nikon APS-C mirrorless camera with retro controls. It may look cool, but it is way below the Canon R7 in terms of functionality. Nikon doesn't have any equivalent to the R7 unless you go to FF.

Note that all of the above are mirrorless cameras with EVFs, Electronic View Finders. Mirrorless cameras are rapidly replacing DSLRs (with optical viewfinders) but that means that there are some good DSLR bargains around used.

I think that the first thing that you need to decide is whether you want a mirrorless camera or a used DSLR. Maybe go into a camera store and try out some mirrorless cameras. Some of the alternatives above are well above your budget once you add in lenses, especially lenses for wildlife.

Than I would recommend either the Canon R6 (mk I) or the Nikon Z6 II.

If you don't mind buying third-party lenses, check the Sony A7 III and Tamron lenses. Maybe the 28-200 mm as a general purpose, or the 28-75 f/2.8 if you are more into portraiture.

You are welcome.

I didn't think of it in that way. That's a new way to look at.

Yes, you're correct. FF DSLRs are gonna be cheap but then mirrorless is the future. Considering I'll be using this new purchase for a very very long period, is DSLR a wise choice? Also are these FF DSLRs heavy and hard to carry around?

If cost is the only factor then I can buy just the body with a 50mm prime and pancake lens for starters and gradually save up for my telephoto lens.

Besides the cost factor, would you still suggest DSLR over mirrorless? Thank you!

In YOUR case, mirrorless or not, it’s less relevant since you’re really not looking for the future. That being said, you are looking for something now, and the mirrorless is now.

If you are planning for wildlife, fast AF acquisition is much preferred. Sony generally has good reputation in this area, and it has good 3rd party lens support. The recent Canon releases are pretty good. I understand you are looking for something between 1.5-2K, but if you can stretch to 2.5K, you have camera options with better AF.

What sort of wildlife are you interested in shooting and how much are you willing to spend on a zoom for that?

Canon has a somewhat incomplete lineup of RF zooms. You have a very inexpensive, but quite good RF 100-400 and a very expensive and very good RF 100-500, but nothing with longer reach in a budget friendly package. Is 100-400 enough reach for what you want to shoot?

You could go with older EF lenses and an adapter. Third party lenses can also be adapted, but may come with some challenges.

Sony has a very good 150-600 and still allows third party lenses.

I think that Nikon is supposed to have some good options as well.

Choices, choices ... :)

Sony has a 200-600 for about 2k US$. Sigma offers a 150-600 for nearly half that price.

Nikon has 100-400, 400 f/4.5 and 800 f/6.3. They are all over 2K, but are relatively small and light.

look at Canon mirrorless - R6, R8, R10 etc.

Older Canon EF lens work great on mirrorless - for wildlife - 100-400
