Transfer speeds to computer

I've only been getting 75mb/s transfer speeds to my computer when using the camera body as the SD card reader. I tried updating the SD card to a UHS-2 and I'm still getting the same transfer speeds off. What are your transfer speeds when using the camera body as the card reader?

I've tried 3 cables, 2 computers and 4 USB slots. Both a and c. Both computers have usb-c 3.2 Also this is from a A7IV

You say you're getting 75mb/s. Do you know if that's megabits per second or megabytes per second? If it's the latter, it sounds suspiciously close to USB 2's speeds.

My first guess would be the cable. Most USB-C cables out there are USB 2 speeds, as they're mainly meant for power throughput, not data. Unless your cable is explicitly marked with a speed rating, it's safe to assume it's USB 2.

I've tried 3 different cables including one I just bought that's marked at USB C 3.2 Gen 2x2 20gb/s as well as using the USB A 3.2 Gen 2 cable that came with the camera.

The computer I'm using is marked as Front USB-C 3.2 gen 2 10Gb/s, Rear USB-C 3.2 gen 2x2 20Gb/s. The USB A I tried is marked as USB 3.2 Gen 2. The camera is marked as USB C 3.2 Gen 2. The second computer I tried was USB C 3.2 Gen 2. But no matter what combo of cables, ports, computers it's always 75mb/s transfer speed.

Chatgpt says "With the A7 IV’s USB 3.2 Gen 2 and a compatible USB-C cable and computer, you could expect transfer speeds in the 200 MB/s to 400 MB/s range, assuming you're using fast enough SD cards (like UHS-II) and the files aren't too large"

whichever, get a card reader, they are crazy cheap and tiny; (and don't forget to reformat the card when you put it back in).

What is your memory card?

Not all UHS-II cards are created the same. Some are down-right bad compared to the better ones.

For some reason it started working right and the UHS-11 now offloads to the computer at 180mb/s No idea what changed from when I tried it when I first got it and it was only going at 75.. For reference it's the Lexar 1667x. I shot with it last night and when I got home it transferred fine.

I would strongly recommend using a card reader. Using the camera as a very expensive card reader flattens the battery, and may be slower than a card reader.

I often use cards which are faster than the camera. Right now, I'm doing an extreme case - using a V4 CFexpress type A - the camera only support V2, so it is limited to reading the card at 800MB/s. Using a V4 reader into a USB 4 port reads the card at up to 1800. That's downloading to a fast SSD, of course.

Your transfer rate is limited to the slowest of:
  • the card speed
  • the reader speed
  • the cable speed
  • the port speed
  • the disk speed
