Hi all,

What I am about to do was started as an initiative by Don in this thread:
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1036&message=21895652

Reading it made me realise that we all need to do something good for each others.

I gave you all a silent promise that when my prime collection was complete I would follow in Don's footstep and do the same.

It is actually not complete, I am still missing the DA70 and FA 43, but they are on order...

With the arrival of the FA35 today, my belowed sigma 17-70 wil be sent on permenet retirement (it has been since the arrival of the DA21 already). but in stead of selling it off on ebay or somewhere else, I have decided to give it away for FREE.

Postage must be paid by you and I will confirm the winner in a reply to this thread after the deadline has been reached.
Now the rule is that the one needing it the most will get it.

Deadline for submission is Friday March 30th at 2000 hrs GMT.

Call this my way of giving something back to this forum.

The lens is in very fine shape and just looking for a new home.

I have 116 photo online taken with this lens, they can be found here:

Thank you all, for keeping this forum such a great place.

Since I could run out and buy the lens if I wanted, I won't even jump in line, but I have to say that I'm impressed with your generosity and hope that I have the heart to do the same when I start to over-lap ranges (except for primes of course ;-> )

I surely wouldn't qualify so I won't be getting in line. However, I just want to say, this is the most generous offer I've seen in this forum to date. Well done Thomas. You will be rewarded for your generosity.

I guess you would not.

Various factors outside this forum along with my silent promise of one day doing what I have seen others do, is what matters.

This imay come out like a cliche, but knowing that it hopefully will make another person enjoy photography is more than reward enough.

Thank you for yur kind compliment.

Wow! I have a DA 18-55 I'll trade ya for it. ;-) Or I could pay it forward. But seriously, this is an amazingly generous thing to do. I am sure there is someone deserving!

Wow. That is an amazing offer you are making.

Personally, I can't claim utmost need but I am a college student that decided on the k100d w/ kit lens and 50-200. Just recently I spent my last pennies on a fa 50mm f/1.4 for low-light shooting. my next move would have been to pick up a good zoom to replace the kit, either the pentax 16-45 or something like the sigma 17-70.

Maybe it's just me, but I almost feed back to be on the receiving end of such generosity - I would totally offer to buy the lens off of you! At any rate, I would gladly make the same offer with my 18-55 :).

I'm still in shock at the generosity of this offer. Good luck on finding a worthy recipient!

Wow, wish I even had over $300 to just give away. Buying the K10D put me beyond being able to get that level of lens for a good long time.

Good luck to all!

I tried to buy this lens for my new K100D. You can verify this in my post history. I finally settled for a Sigma 18-200 because of its range. Since the K100D is my first dSLR I wanted to understand which focal length I would be using the most before investing in a very expensive or dedicated lens. As of right now, I don’t have a legitimate use for the Sigma 17-70 but if you sent it to me, I will use it for some time and order it if I would like to have one. In any case I will give your lens, after carefully testing it, to another Pentax SLR forum member in the same way you are passing it along.

Your generosity is incredible and I thank you as a forum member for
contributing to the positive atmosphere in this forum.
Thank you Al.
Best of luck picking a worthy candidate. I'm sure there will be
many quality petitions.
I think there is.

I like your style,

Whilst I don't need such a lens as I have the great Sigma 18-125mm perhaps more of us could hunt around for lenses that we will no longer use and give them a new home.

I'm a classic Bower bird (never dispose of anything) my garage is testament to it.

You have prompted me to have a look through my stuff and see what I've got that could be useful to others.

Well, i probably wont qualify, but i'll tell you why i might...

my pentax history:

I inherited a Ds from my photography mentor, who used to own a digital photo studio in McKinleyville Ca (humboldt county). Me being a lonely sales associate, at the time, at Ritz Camera in Eureka. In my possession, the ccd went bad (VPN like you wouldn't believe, at iso 100). It was justified though, being his only camera for years, he took some 9000+ shots with it. So i ended up taking the plunge and getting a K100D, to be able to use the kit lens, an old 135/3.5 M, and an older manual sears zoom. In no time i fell in love.

So... I get offered a change of location and move to work at the Ritz in Folsom, Ca, and am quickly known as 'the Pentax Guy'. I support my natural LBA (i say natural because i have yet to stumble upon these amazing forums), and buy a tamron sp 24-135. A week later i get the FA50/1.4, while learning about it on these forums, and starting a new addiction, PFA (Pentax Forums Addiction)[long time reader, just recently started posting]. While working through this amazing holiday season, i convince a few of my regulars to get the k10d.... and when one finally comes in (being on order of course) i fall in love once again. not being able to wait, i support the local camera shop down the road and buy a k10 body, a vertical grip, a remote, extra battery and a 540 flash.

so christmas comes along, and i visit the family and friends with my k10, and its little baby brother, my backup k100. when visiting one of my best friends, her mom becomes interested, being a artist by profession. me being a camera salesman and pentax lover... and i offer to let her borrow my k100 and the tamron 24-135. so, of course, another one falls in love.

time goes by, and my k10d accompanies me in some great times in my life (like my 21st birthday this past january) and some timeless photos of my friends and girlfriend... and i realize a college student doesn't really need a back up slr.

so i sell my friend's mom a barely used k100 for a steal of a price (400, yeah i know). just because i know she'd get a lot more out of it than i would...or any other brand (she soon asked me about the d50 and the other consumer oriented cameras, but tried my best to keep her on the pentax path)

just this past week i sent her the kit lens in exchange for my tamron back, but i know she had her heart set on the tamron. (i gather, after her calling me at my store just so talk about sharpness and color)

so what im getting at.... i would love to spread the pentax love, and pass this lens on, if i were to gain a 17-70 (as im finding i'd gain much more from wide angle than the telephoto range)...

i have actually tried to track this lens down... but couldn't when i had the money, or could when i didn't have the money....

so i hope that you read this, and just consider me, as i would give it a good home....

and speaking of home.... i was just YESTERDAY offered the manager's position at the store in eureka where i started, and i accepted today (it seemed easiest since i was returning to Humboldt State this year anyways). so i would post BEAUTIFUL pictures of the northern coast with that lens, and as a symbol of that, here is picture of Luffenholtz County Beach on my last photo shoot just before leaving humboldt this past year (i also blew this picture up to show customers what a 6mp image would look like blown up to 20x30)....

thanks for you consideration!

ps, i didn't think i would write so much, so sorry about that.... but looking back at my short history, its pretty cool... hope you guys like the read!

Thats werry generous, I would like to applie, but sure others are more qualified.

For now I can only affourd the Kit lens, and I'm saving ut for more lenses. But it's hard to find good used lenses that I could affourd for now. I will have the money after summer, but thats a long time to wait ;)

But I also know I could make great images with the kit lense since I have already done that imho.

I was thinking of that same poster when I read about this offer. As much as anyone I can think of on this forum, I guess that is who I would like to see get the lens. This is not to say there aren't others who are more deserving.

This is a truly generous offer Duplo; I couldn't be more impressed.

Well I honestly feel that I am not the person with the greatest need as I have been blessed with some great glass but as not to many people have replied:

I do not have the short end of this lens covered and am a college student so my finances for not currently allow me to do so. I do plan to eventually pick up the 16-45 or maybe something else that's wide. As I said I have beed blessed with some great glass for very cheap: 77 LTD that I rebuilt, M 50 1.7 100mm f4 Macro and Tamron 28-75 hence only really missing the wide end. I will say however that should I be selected if I were to replace the lens with something that overlaps less with the Tamron, I would also give it away for free to someone with need and would not sell it.

I am sure that there are some with greater need out there, but thanks for your consideration.
