Thunder

Hiya,

Well, you get the first comment from somebody who jumped ship 2 months ago !

Good shot of it, with the right tone.

However, i'd crop the top half and make it 3x2 rather than 4x3.

Good soft shot.

You seem to be quite often on these pages - always welcome. Has Nikon changed your workflow in any way? I haven't checked nikon-pages too much.

Isn't it funny how our real life disturbs this virtual life... ;) But I'm glad you liked this one.

Ps. Your series of disadvantaged people was great (and still is...). Hopefully you'll get enough publicity with it. I know that part of life quite well - my daily job is a special education teacher.

Very nice, lovely colors. This summer in Finland has been great for lightning photographers :)

And, yes, we have had our share of thunders this year - but they can't really be compared with tornados and hurricanes etc...

But I think I have found out, that a quite heavy ND-filter would be helpful for these and some other stuff. Time to go shopping.

Great shot, Jouko! Nice drama and colours. I love those clouds! Marc's suggestion of cropping some of the top away seems like a good idea.

Cheers

Very nice picture

Have one question -how have you managed to catch lighting moment? Did you use multi-shot mode and one got this picture or you use any sensor for auto-shot or you were just lucky?

i tried to shot thunder this summer also with my e-620, but was not so lucky as you ...

I think some have success with a ND filter and long exposures...

Would like to hear the input of the OP too...

It's not the size of your sensor but how you use it that counts...

Jouko, very nice shot! I actually like the lightning on the side like that...adds to the scene. a little bigger would be nice though

About the first try outs for thunder and lightning for me... As long exposure as I could make without a dark ND-filter ( now on my shopping list) and shutter press when lightning hits - my reactions are not too good: about 40 shots and one hit. This thunder was not too heavy, and I could not use longer times than 1,5 - 2 sec. The light behind the flash is sunset, not fire.

So, this is a "one shot picture", most of the development done in Capture 1, some pp in photoshop (levels etc). Focus set manual to make camera faster, A-mode, iso 100. This one F10 and 1/4s.

Next time I'll use ND-filter... With a "reasonable" thunder you'll get couple of flashes within one minute, and if you can go for long shutter speeds, you'll get some into a photo. The darker the easier this is to arrange. Of course there is the other side of the coin: everything moves...

Optical sensor for shutter? Might be a good idea if someone tries to take these seriously... Would make possible to use shorter shutter speeds = sharper landscapes.

PS. Try to stay away from the rain. It always spoils the picture, if drops hit the lens.

Really, really nice shot. I looked at the EXIF and it says you were shooting at .25sec. Is that correct??

If so nailing that lightning in the background was really a stroke of luck (pardon the pun). I'd get a lottery ticket and see if you luck still held!

but with lottery I should fill up too many coupons... This was one of about 40 shots - in fact one of the first ones. Luck? Yes, of course. As I said earlier, a good ND-filter is in my shopping list.

Very nice shot. I don't mind the lightning off to the side. I do think, as Cynops said, the shot could be improved by cropping off some of the top. Nevertheless, I really like it. Thanks for posting.

Great capture!

One thing to be aware of with ND's and daytime lightning is that if you use too long of an exposure you will not capture the bolts if they are in the distance as they are not bright enough and too brief to register given your long exposure.

I either use a lightning trigger or setup my camera for 1/8-1/4 sec using ND's and have my remote timer set on continuous capture so the shutter is tripped automatically. This can result in lots of misses but all you need is one great capture to make it all worth while!

Jouko,

Great mood, colors, light/-ning, photo!

I only have thunderstorms w/ lightning at night here:-)

Claus.
