Things I hate about my R6 Mark II

I’m sure this will be a great overall camera, but the main purpose of this thread is to point out the flaws, shortcomings, or dislikes you may have with your R6 MK ii.

I have had mine for approximately 30 minutes and a couple things are already bugging me.

#1 The new toggle switch between photo and video on the left side is extremely low quality. The old power switch on the mark 1 that used to be there was black anodized metal. This new toggle switch looks like it is made of 3D printed plastic and has kind of a matte white paint on top that is bound to wear off. Some people called the Mark 1, “plastic fantastic” and this level of build quality helps it live up to that name/reputation. For $2500 this switch should have been much higher quality. Preferably metal like the mk1. Seems like a cost cutting maneuver

#2 This is my 5th RF based camera and so far every one of them has had a one or multiple dead pixels in the view finder. This is a huge pet peeve of mine. It is one of the first things I check on any Led/lcd panel. Some companies have strict qc and don’t let these things into their finished products, but I'm batting 5/5 with Canon so far, with dead pixels on every camera viewfinder.
They seem to show up on black backgrounds more so. If you want to check yours, leave your lens cap on and turn the camera to the on position. This should show your dead pixels when looking through the eye piece. In most daytime scenarios you won’t see the dead pixels but under darker conditions they do pop up and it is annoying. Unfortunately this is the one on my new R6 mkii and it is the brightest burnt one I’ve had.

Have fun shooting your new cameras, but if we can point out some of the things we dislike about our Canon cameras, then maybe the manufacturer catches wind and things get fixed eventually. Im off to test my new camera now.

As for number 2, it's common practice for LCD manufacturers to allow a few dead or stuck pixels in the final product, as the chances of getting them all is low. Some won't even warranty for them unless it's more than 3.

Also, my R6 has a few hot pixels with the lens cap on in the VF, but not when the cap is off and pointed at a well lit black surface. Mine at least seems to be a result of the exposure Sim, not the screen. Unless it shows up on the menu too?

Overall I am liking the small improvements made to the mark ii (especially the custom Q menu)

But I noticed I was unable to pair my blutooth BR-E1 canon remote :(

Hopefully a firmware fix takes care of this

Never mind regarding the BR-E1. I had to unpair it from the older camera. Now i am able to pair it with the mark ii

Can you tell me if the information on the LCD rotates to the bottom of the screen when you rotate the camera to portrait orientation? I know the information in the viewfinder rotates, but, at least with respect to the Canon cameras I've owned, the information on the LCD does not rotate.

Charisgratia, it appears to still be the case. Viewfinder info rotates while rear lcd does not rotate. Maybe there is a menu setting for it, but out of the box it looks like it’s a no.

Ok, thanks for checking. I appreciate it.

If these are the two things you hate about the R6/2 then it must be a darn good camera. This said the dead pixel might annoy me to some extent.

  • Thanks for the reply, but this is supposed to be a cumulative/ongoing list of problems, dislikes, annoyances, etc with the camera. We are just getting started 🙂
#3 IBIS RATTLE. As some have already pointed out. There is a really cheap rattle coming from within the camera when it is off and it is lightly shaken. The original R6 had a more damped muffled sound. This ibis rattle is cheap and plasticy sounding. Is this another cost cutting measure or is this something that will be ironed in later production runs?

See video below starting at 6 min 20 second mark:

My guess, the rattle is a result of an "improved" IBIS system that has more room to move, thus giving it more lead up to slap into things when powered off.

It's a guess, but that's what it sounds like.

I think I never spent so much time observing the camera itself and studying it so in detail. It never came to my mind to purposefully look for dead pixels. Honestly, after 1.5 years of having the R6 I don't have a clue if there are any :-) . And if you asked me what material the main switch is made from, I wouldn't be able to answer - even after 1.5 years. I just use it :-) .

So not being too picky about tools might give one's mind more freedom :-) .

My A7 III rattled like this but I can't say it had better IBIS than R6 ;) Sitll, loved that camera ;)

Maybe Canon replaced Crip*le Hammer with Rattle Hammer? ;)

Big +1 here. I say shoot it for a month and then see/say what you think of it.

Took a few tries and it worked. What troubled me was the message to turn it off when not in use as it drains the battery.

I have also just learned that I wasn't crazy and you cannot use the trigger with other infra red devices which stops me from using my Canon Flash Off Camera and my PCBs.

I love it. Can see the difference immediately.
